Another "ouch!" for California.
Quote:

As many as 200,000 state workers in California could see their pay scale slashed to minimum wage, if orders from the governor's office are followed.

In a letter to the state controller Thursday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration ordered the department to reduce the payment of state workers to the hourly rate of $7.25 unless a budget is reached soon.

"These are preparations for the prospect of not having a budget passed this month," said Lynelle Jolley with the California Department of Personnel Administration.

Without a budget, the July payroll, sent to go out the end of the month, would be cut, she said.

"This is not a scare tactic," she said. "This is based on a very real legal requirement."

The legal requirement was ordered in 2003, when the California Supreme Court ruled that the state controller had no legal authority to pay wages in the absence of a budget.

"His role is to process the payroll that we give him," Jolley said.

. This "no pay until budget is passed" bugaboo has been a pain in the ass for us for YEARS. It's just plain stupid. My sympathy goes out to those workers; yeah, government people tend to make more than usual, but minimum wage???

Thanx again, Govenator...

I think *ALL* Gov't employees should make minimum wage, every single one, STARTING with Congress and the President.

Always did, if you read the Federalist/Antifederalist papers, there's a certain attitude in that direction during the discussions, that the only reason they were payin em at all was to recompense them for having to hike all that way to vote, really.

It was supposed to be participatory, service, not exploitation, and on top of that....

I would dearly love to watch the fuckers who SET the minimum wage - try to friggin LIVE on it, yeah, that'd teach a pretty goddamn strong lesson, especially when they get hit with single-one-job-no-exemptions and a 28% bite right off the top before the state and local gets their turn to bend em over the sawhorse too.

You'd see *REAL* wage reform around here, really fuckin quick, I gaurantee it.

And yeah, The Governator can take minimum wage too, or give his wages BACK as an incompetence penalty for NOT balancing the budget, hows about that, Arnie ?

Frem, I'm all in favor of the Big Guys getting minimum wage. After all, they're all "rich", and it would take SOME of the incentive out of politics...although they get enough perks to make up for it no doubt...sigh...

But the workers who do the REAL work? No. Do you know what it's like to try and get by on minimum wage? That's something I wouldn't do to them--government work is mindnumbing enough as it is, to penalize them by paying only minimum wage for it I think is "cruel and unusual punishment".

I live in the land of state workers--my home town has no real economy. It has state workers. Hordes of them. For every dedicated public servant, there are a dozen worthless bureaucrats, all of whom belong to a union. Collectively, they are transforming California into Greece.

Minimum wage beats nothing. State workers don't get paid if there isn't a budget, and California hasn't had a timely budget in recent memory due to:

a) a minority of obstructionist Republicans, with jihadist zeal for "austerity"

b) a majority of incompetent Democrats, who refuse to make hard decisions or govern, preferring to make symbolic gestures of their tolerance while softly whining about their need for more "revenue" for their pet social programs.

...not to mention the fact that Californians have a bottomless hunger for public services, and absolutely no desire to pay for anything, ever. I'm moving to Kyrgyztan.

Dearest P(w)N,

It's not Arnold's fault. If anything, the fact that a) Arnold is Numero Uno and b) smokes hella weed, dude, speaks highly of his character.

No, the problem is that he's an impotent Governator, who must deal with the single worst collection of politicians to have ever been assembled a single roof. He can't work with the legislature, but really, nobody could. He made a valiant, if quixotic attempt to take on the public unions that have ravage this state (no, the SEIU isn't the problem...take a look at the god damn prison guards). He should go back to the things that he is good at, like making movies that I do not like, and sexual harassment and so forth. Then we could remember him fondly.

To be clear, I did not vote for the bastard, and the recall was one of the worst collective decisions California ever made.

Now there's an idea - let them (politicos) work for a living. Then you'd see some real "reform."

But you're right about the framers there Frem. Somewhere along the line things changed, and how!

"And yeah, The Governator can take minimum wage too, or give his wages BACK as an incompetence penalty for NOT balancing the budget, hows about that, Arnie ?"

He made promises of being the savior, or anti-Brown, of California. Here we are some 8 years latter and has the state made any progress. Ok maybe big business. He's been real quiet about his accomplishments lately. Little did he know that life doesn't go according to the script.

I was also in favor of stripping the Enron thieves of all their money and property and giving to the poor folk they robbed. That would be worse than sending the crooks to the Federal Country Clubs, er, I mean prison. They would not survive, period.

Well, in his defense, it's not all Arnies fault there - even a Mayor or Governor is not the be-all, end-all, and right now I am rather thankful for that given the situation in Detroit where the Mayor(Bing) is just another yes-man of the Wayne County prosecutor who *really* runs this corrupted wasteland(Kym Worthy) and because we managed to stage an internal Coup d'état and subvert the City Council to our side by installing a leader who honestly believes in the will of the people(former journalist Charles Pugh) and as such we've been running over mister-yes-man by overriding his vetos.

So, you really can't blame Arnie for everything when any coalition of state legislators can pretty much cock block him at will, and often Governors have a lot less power than you'd think - in some states they're all but ceremonial positions in response to repeated jackassery causing the people to strip power from the office.

All that said, I think Arnie not only isn't half bad at the job, but also I respect that he grew into it, losing a lot of his juvenille narcisicm and intolerant attitudes when faced with undeniable realities and he has indeed made strong efforts to better the state under his care - the effectiveness of his execution of his duties can certainly be questioned, but I really do think the Governators heart is in the right place, and that from someone who is not known for giving politicos the benefit of the doubt, neh ?

So yes, Arnie deserves his share for his part in this, but lets not forget the obstructionist jackasses in the state legislature who'd rather play party politics and throw shit at each other all day rather than get anything done, who would rather burn the whole state to the ground than see it under the control of "the other guys".

That's a SERIOUS problem with state politics all across the country, in that inter-party warfare has become rabid enough that they will actively destroy the state in a scorched earth policy without concern to their residents and constituents just to "protect" it from the other party - that shit is nuts, and it HAS to stop.

Anyhows, it's not all his fault alone, and I do give him a fat chunk of credit for TRYING to do a creditable job even lacking all that much political experience.

Fucked if I'd want him as President though - but if that door ever DOES open, he'll never know what hit him cause it also makes Jennifer Granholm eligable and she'll hit him like a steamroller just like she did Dick Posthumos.

No, but I agree that if the mechanism for paying state employees (a budget) has been stymied by other state employees (the legislature failing to pass a budget), then minimum wage as a temporary measure is not unreasonable...as opposed to other options, such as furloughs or just not paying people.

You know something Frem, I'm glad I finished reading your post before commenting because I was thinking, just for a split now, that you my friend were going (dare I say it......I dare, I dare) soft.

I know, if feels strange even thinking it, but there you have it. Especially since I believe in looking at things from all angles (to the best of my ability). But seriously, you gave me a gentle poke there as a reminder to think, then speak. Thanks pal, I needed that.

I worked in city government for a bit so I know that politics make strange bedfellows, as the saying goes. So I do know that there is more gray area, when it comes to such things, than most folk. I too have fallen into the easy trap of knee-jerk response, as most of the usual suspects here in Browncoatland who go in for that sort of thing.

So as I sheepishly retreat into the shadows to redouble my efforts to regain my sense of logical thinking, and I submit to you that I am tired both physically and mentally (as I just now arrived from my job). It seems that I misjudged my energy level and now feel a bit run down. I will return, perhaps, later today.

It's a shower, then off to bed. Maybe I'll dream that I struck it rich and hire Joss and company to finish the Serenity Trilogy. I am delirious!

Well, one thing I have noticed recently, SGG - is just HOW MUCH of a pass all the enablers and obstructionists get, they throw it all on the guy at the top and pretend they don't share the blame - and this is something we let slide way too damned often.

And it does work both ways, I mean, Detroit Mayor Bing is a wholly-owned puppet of the real power around here, Prosecutor Kym Worthy, and what happened to Kwame had shit to do with how corrupt he was and everything to do with him refusing to take her orders anymore, you see ?

And *IF*, the Mayor or Governor was the end-all-be-all, we'd be fucked, but it ain't, we subverted the City Council out from under them, and then when Bing went and tried to roadblock shit with vetos (under orders from Worthy to protect her corrupt jackbooted 'police' at all costs) we overrode it and ran his ass over completely, and will continue to do so, rendering him naught more than a mouthpiece and an embarrassment - since there were threats to simply ignore due process and say fuck the rules, which is a common practice when the rules they crush us under come back and bite them on the ass, but looking down the barrel of an actual organized resistance capable of cleaning their clocks, held in check *BY* the adherence to those rules, they gave it a miss.

This is a mirror image of what the GOP has been doing lately, they get enough of the little guys in their pocket that even if a Mayor or Governor does represent the will of the people, they can totally cockblock them at a local level, and then still get to point the finger of blame.

And in order to break that shit, we gotta recognize it, and quit giving such a pass to these jackasses, or more states and cities will wind up economically, even physically, devastated like Michigan and Detroit.

Jenny did one holy hell of a job, keepin us hanging on by our fingernails, while the GOP did everything in their power to utterly destroy this states infrastructure and economy so they could blame HER, when in fact they are indeed directly responsible for nearly all the damage, just cause she is...
A: The Governor
B: A Democrat

And they thought they could play this same game here, shift all the blame onto her just cause she's the most obvious, visible representation of the State Government, but it's never just ONE person outside of a tyranny, even Evil Overlords have flunkies and minions, don't ya know.

So watching Arnie get kinda the same treatment Jenny does made me feel the need to point out that it ain't his sole responsibility, cause giving the obstructionist jackasses a free pass like that can and will eventually cause devastation to your State, City, or Township when folks are so partisan they really would rather destroy everything in sight than see it clenched in any fist but theirs.

And we all know who's fist it REALLY belongs in, don't we ?

Careful - you're falling into the same mental trap that's hemmed Rappy's mind in so severely. You hate the guy 'cause you didn't vote for him, so everything he does is automatically wrong.

I hated Bush for lots of reasons, but "because I didn't vote for him" never entered into the discussion as one of them. I hate Obama because I *DID* vote for him, and then he veered sharply to the center and became Bush Lite™. "Less hate! More killing! Less hate! More killing!"
