Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is not fully prepared for heavy rain and winds of a typhoon heading towards the country, officials admit. Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), which runs the plant, said some reactor buildings were uncovered, prompting fears the storm may carry radioactive material into the air and sea.

Typhoon Songda is expected to hit mainland Japan as early as Monday.

"We have made utmost efforts, but we have not completed covering the damaged reactor buildings," a Tepco official said on Saturday. "We apologise for the lack of significant measures against wind and rain," the official added.

Just to add to the thought...

We just had a severe outbreak of tornadoes in the South. Of course, hurricanes are a part of the Gulf and south Atlantic Coast, and floods in the Midwest and South. What would happen if a severe storm were to cut external power to the plant? A lot of them don't have backup power... no batteries, diesel generators that wouldn't start, or don't have fuel, or don't have enough fuel to carry on for more than few hours... It's not just earthquakes and tsunamis that can cripple a reactor and cause it to go boom.

I think PN's actually been saying one of the powerplants around Tennesee got disabled by a bad storm.

Typhoon, ouch.

I'm not sure if the one PN referred to was disabled, or if they just took it offline due to the storms and flooding, etc. It might be time to take a long look at ALL our reactors to see where they're deficient.
