Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

If we have come to a state in this country where Rick Perry can actually win the Presidency, I think it's time to move to Canada. This is not te country I've known all my life, and it's one I wouldn't admire. He epitomizes the concept of "I've got mine, fuck you!" to me.
Quote:

The big story of the GOP presidential race these days is how Gov. Rick Perry has suddenly burst into the sky as a new star. Whether he will continue to burn brightly or flame out is probably the most important question no one can answer.

Only a few weeks ago, the Republican field seemed both weak and settled. Michele Bachmann introduced some uncertainty when she sparkled at the CNN debate in New Hampshire and won the straw poll in Iowa. But she seemed unlikely to catch the front-runner, Mitt Romney. Indeed, he was on cruise control, comfortably out front in polls and money.

Then, boom! Perry jumps in and turns the race upside down. A CNN poll taken over the weekend showed Perry building a 12-point lead over Romney among Republican voters, 30-18 with Sarah Palin third and Ron Paul slipping to fourth. Did last night's debate change the underlying dynamics? Let's await the verdict of voters, but my sense is that Rick Perry walked out the same way he walked in: front-runner.

Mitt Romney has a better command of the facts and, at the CNN debate last night in Tampa, again won on points. But Perry has "command presence" -- that ineffable quality people look for in leaders. Especially in hard, uncertain times, people want someone strong and decisive up front, steering. Romney looks more the manager, Perry the leader.

There is something muscular, tough, almost animalistic about Perry that seems to be resonating among Republicans -- at least for the moment. It's partly the way he carries himself -- shoulders back, chest forward, a confident stride. It's partly his smile as others beat up on him. But it's mostly the way he talks -- simple, straight-to-the-point, colloquial, no qualifiers, cut the B.S. Conservatism served straight up. People are so tired of lying, pandering and political correctness that they enjoy the change: "He didn't say Ponzi scheme, did he? Wow!" He may not be book smart, but he is street smart -- and wily.

His appeal may well be limited to tea partiers and the hard right. Judging from Twitter traffic, many others who tuned in last night were horrified by what they saw. "Lock all those candidates up in the hall so they won't destroy the country," was a typical response from the left. And there were groans as well that the evening was not only too right but too white. We remain a splintered people, so that it may be exceedingly difficult for anyone to govern in the next few years.

Still, the tendency to write off Perry -- especially among the Eastern elite -- is a mistake. Last week, after his debut in the Reagan Library debate where he called Social Security a failure and a Ponzi scheme, the word went out from the commentariat that Perry was toast.

Wrong! If anything, he went up among Republican voters, not down.

Let's be clear: Perry could well flame out in coming weeks. He could easily get into trouble for what he says. His tendency to shoot from the lip brings back uncomfortable memories of George W. There are those who insist that he could also get into trouble for what he may have done. His detractors in Texas are spreading the word that he plays on the edges and plays rough. His rivals are starting to dig as are out-of-state press. Will anything come of it? No one knows. Some in Texas have stirred up trouble against him for years, and he keeps winning.

Ironically, if Perry does flame out, he will have done Mitt Romney an enormous favor. Not only has Perry made Romney seem more mainstream as a candidate, but he has also lifted the quality of Romney's game -- Romney was much crisper and more animated last night than when he was on cruise control. If Romney now beats Perry for the nomination, he will have much better chops for the general election. http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/13/opinion/gergen-perry-star/index.html?hpt

Seems to me I heard a lot of the same things about Bush II at the time...you know, guy you'd like to have a beer with, straight talking, not book smart but street smart. And look where THAT got us!

Hello,

I have to shake my head in sadness when I hear such sentiments. Shall all the good people who can afford to do so move away? And let the devils have us all?

That epitomizes the concept quite well.

Too many skeletons in that ratbastards closet for it to happen, a damn conga line, even his skeletons have skeletons...

And if the opposition won't pick up that ball and run with it, *I* would carry it FOR them, cause no-way, no-how would I let Perry or Romney anywhere near the oval office without one hell of a fight.

And anyone who'd support them, not out of ignorance, but after knowing what they are, what they have done....

I mean, where do you draw the line and say "You're a monster!" - I mean, Romneys bankroll comes in great part from an abusive organization with a long list of dead kids, how could anyone with an ounce of humanity support the motherfucker knowing that ?
Perry more or less murdered some with his attempt to knowingly force a dangerous and ineffective vaccine upon them, how do you justify that ?

How on earth can you trust such people with the fate of a country ?
How should we regard people who, with full awareness of their monstrous deeds, cheeringly support it ?

Comes a point where you have to draw a line, and say "No, I will not stand for this, not for them, and not for your support of them, because if you do, you are my enemy." - I wish it would never come to that point, but it sure looks like it's gonna.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

There's been a lot of ballyhoo over Perry's shoddy debate performance in this latest go-round. Several said that everyone tore into him and let him have it, and then the focus seemed to shift to batshit Bachmann's claims about Gardasil (and those claims aren't pure horseshit, as Frem can readily attest through bitter, bitter experience).

What got me was a couple of things.

1) Bachmann making claims that others find odd or ludicrous. Hello? She's a fundamentalist nutbag whackjob - HER ENTIRE EXISTENCE AND BELIEF SYSTEM IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SERIES OF ODD AND LUDICROUS CLAIMS! Why was anyone surprised by this latest one, especially given that it's not even that preposterous?

2) The number one thing that slipped out when Perry was questioned on the Gardasil debacle was his defense of himself. "If you think that I can be bought... for five thousand dollars... I'm offended."

Look at it closely. He admitted outright that he can absolutely be bought, but not for a measly five grand (the five grand is a lie anyway, since it was more than $28,000). Nowhere does he say that he can't be bought - just that he can't be bought that cheap. As Tammy sang in "The Kids In the Hall", "I ain't gonna spread for no roses!"

Besides, the guy who worked out that $28 grand "donation" is now the head of Perry's superPAC, with more than $55 million at his disposal. So no, Perry WON'T be bought for five grand, but he definitely will be bought.

I've been meaning to say, Frem and Michelle Bogman have something in common, they both think the gardasill vaccine being required is a bad idea. I would tend to agree since its newer and isn't as immediately threatening as something like tetnis or polio or what have you. I had it when it first came out, I've got a strong system and not much affects me. I did fine, no trouble, but its still less than five years old, give it some time before making it required to work out the kinks in it.

Besides the side effects (long- and short-term) and the overall efficacy of the vaccine, there's the social/moral implications to consider, on more than one front.

We've been told - preached to, really - by the right that if you give kids sex education, you encourage promiscuity. Abstinence is the ONLY education they need, we're told.

We've been told that legal abortions promote promiscuity, that women will just use abortions as their contraception. As idiotic a claim as that is, it's still being made by anti-choice proponents on the right.

Yet somehow, vaccinating pre-teen girls from a virus that is only passed through sexual contact is all about safety, and in no way promotes bad behavior.

Seems more than a bit hypocritical to me, but it comes from Rick Perry, so that should be no surprise...

Keep the Shiny side up

On the 'Political Junkie' portion of NPR's 'Talk of the Nation' yesterday, they were discussing the Republican candidates and a caller who identified himself as a Tea Party organizer noted that Perry was not conservative enough for him, that he could support Bachman, Gingrich, Santorum or Cain, and that if Perry was nominated many Tea Party folks wouls sit this election out.

It'll be interesting to see whether Perry trys to get the Tea Party on his side or expects he can win with the Christian and fiscal conservatives and some moderates.

When I see Perry on TV I find him a bit creepy. I hope he loses momentum soon.

I personally don't see gardasill as a "moral" issue in regard to sex, most people have sex eventually, this is just about prevention for later, it doesn't mean that girls are being told that now they can rut whenever they want, with whomever they want.

Well, MY problem with it is that whole Guillain-Barre syndrome, neural damage, and oh yes, dropping DEAD, thing - and mind you most of the girls who suffered GBS or Neuro damage then slowly withered and did eventually die, in a pretty horrifying way - fellow activist Cynthia Janak has dug into this issue better than I could have, and like me, has her own casualty list.

I could provide a hundred links, but for brevity, just the one....
http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/02/09/idUS123707+09-Feb-2009+BW200
90209

The "science" behind it is mostly bunk - one method in which they deliberately concealed the danger is by using a reactive adjuvant in the "control" group, one by itself known to cause nasty reactions and side effects, so that by comparison it would load the study towards neutral and help hide adverse reactions, which says to me that THEY KNEW, why else take deliberate steps to conceal it ?
http://www.examiner.com/vaccines-in-national/how-did-gardasil-pass-fda
-review

Quote:

There were also 37 deaths that occurred during the clinical trials. One would think this alone would have required further investigation prior to approval. Is this fatality rate not a little high for a group of 20,118 healthy young women?

Questions for the FDA:

Why were these new medical conditions not looked at as possible adverse reactions?
How could so many new medical conditions occur in such a small group of healthy women?
Why was Merck allowed to use their proprietary adjuvant as a control solution instead of a real placebo?
Why was Merck allowed to list their AAHS control group and the saline placebo control group separately under adverse site reactions, and allowed to combine them under new medical conditions?
Were the deaths examined closely? If not, why not?
Why was Merck not required to do further safety testing with this many new medical conditions occurring during their clinical trials.
Did Merck conduct any safety trials on their new proprietary adjuvant prior to using it in Gardasil?

Believe me, the VAERS database on this reads like a category of horrors, and if one takes into account the well known underreporting problem is downright chilling, not to much because of the deaths, but also because signs like pain, nausea and loss of consciousness are dismissed as "Non-serious", and if the more severe reactions do not occur IMMEDIATELY, then it's generally dismissed as "unattributable", so say, if you pass out and feel sick right after, go home, get sicker and sicker and then a week later wind up in the ER with severe neuro damage, it doesn't count, you see ?

But the real rumdinger is that their own lead researcher, Dr Diane Harper, herself admitted that the HPV vaccines in question were all but ineffective, and that none of the trials in any way used a large enough sample group, or even lasted long enough to determine whether the Vaccine was effective or not.
They dare call this science ?

But no, what the real red flag thing was, and Mikey and others were here for this, watching the horror unfold - was when Merck started pushing incredibly hard to stuff it into as many people as they could, a headlong rush to squeeze maximum $$$ out of it as fast as possible, almost as if they KNEW something was wrong with it, and wanted to make maximum profit before the boom came down. *cringe*.
Oh how awful being right can be....

Mind you, I took a lot, A LOT, of shit for even voicing that suspicion, even more when I started pointing out other bad signs like GBS and deaths, it was all coincidence and conspiracy theory, yadda fucking yadda... until it could no longer BE denied, what with Mercks ad-blitz, Perry mandating it and them trying to shove it on boys as well despite as far as I know never even having been tested on em, while the deaths and injuries piled up - and since no long term studies were EVER done, who bloody knows what the longterm health consequences might be ?
And then I get a phone call, one of my own family, who like many others, was scoffing and dismissing my desperate attempts to warn them as bunk, immediately after getting it, got sick, then sicker... and..
*sigh*
Yeah, I'm damn bitter about it, you'd fucking THINK that when someone has a habit of calling stuff in advance, in detail, folks would listen to em, yanno ?
But no, and I know I shouldn't kick myself about it but I do, how can I not ?

Oh, and as for those clueless jackasses offering wads of cash for proof ?

Huh.

Quite frankly, I don't see it like that at all. I do appreciate one touting the spirit of the individual, but I have questions about Perry.

He's damn near in favor of open borders, not a fan of e-verify, and even though I'm over the nonsense of his forced immunization idea, it still bugs me that he ever thought it was a good idea.

I'm not sold on this guy, by a long shot. I know many GOPers may want to hitch their wagon to him, but I'm still in Cain's camp.

Well, if sex education, the availability of legal abortion services, and access to contraception are all seen by the right as encouraging promiscuity (and they are), it seem logical that a vaccine for a sexually transmitted virus would also be seen as encouraging such behavior.

What most people don't understand is that teens are going to have sex. They're going to get interested in it, and they're going to experiment with it. You can accept it and try to arm them with some tools, facts, and knowledge, or you can hide your head in the sand and pretend it doesn't happen, but it's going to happen. Contraception doesn't encourage teens to have sex. A picture of a monkey wrench can encourage teens to have sex. Point being, teens really don't need any encouragement to have sex, and trying to tell them not to do so is really not going to do any good.

They didn't stop the ad-blitz voluntarily, Riona - it took a lot of angry folk to MAKE them stop.
In several other countries, the ads if not the vaccine were outright banned, the commercials for violating said countrys truth in advertising, the vaccine for being dangerous, The UK, Australia, India and France, that I know of, and Indias really let them have it over this.

As for VAERS reporting, just to clarify, here's a sample, okay ?
http://www.examiner.com/vaccines-in-national/why-gardasil-is-still-on-
the-market-part-1-vaers-reporting-limitations

Quote:

Information has been received...concerning a 20 year old female with no medical history reported, who on 01-APR-2008 was vaccinated with a dose of Gardasil....The patient died four days after...patient sought unspecified medical attention. An autopsy was performed which ruled out suicide and anything suspicious. The cause of death is currently unknown. VAERS ID: 310262-1 (D)
Information has been received…concerning a 23-year-old female…who on 31-JAN-2008 was vaccinated with her 1st dose of Gardasil...the patient experienced anaphylactic shock 2 minutes after vaccination characterized by a brief loss of consciousness...respiratory arrest, eyes rolled upwards, blurred vision and greyish skin tone...Anaphylactic shock was considered to be immediately life-threatening. VAERS ID: 304739-1 (S)
Cold sweat, Fall, Foaming at mouth, Grand mal convulsion, Immediate post-injection reaction....Pt [patient, 14-year-old female] received vaccine, took 6 steps, fell to the ground unconscious and had a 60 sec grand mal seizure then regained consciousness. [Blood pressure] after seizure 60/40 pale clammy skin. [Patient] had bit her tongue and had foam around her mouth. VAERS ID: 305259-1 (S)
Information has been received from a physician concerning a female patient who on an unknown date was vaccinated with a dose of Gardasil. Subsequently, the patient experienced a coma and is now paralyzed. At the time of this report, the patient's outcome was unknown. VAERS ID: 303188-1

Case one - doesn't make VAERS, is never listed because they could not determine cause, despite it being fairly obvious.
Case two - flags as "serious", one report.
Case three - flags as "Non-serious" (yeah, I think that's bullshit too), one report.
Case four - doesn't make VAERS, never gets listed.

So, those four horror stories compile to "One Serious, One non-serious".
As of May 2010 There were 18,445 adverse reactions to Gardasil listed.
In light of the above that's especially horrifying, cause in comparison to other meds it stands out as a humongous red flag - and yet no one seems willing to talk about it.

Plus, you could easily double, triple that number and still not have an accurate estimate, since many providers don't have the time or means to do VAERS reporting, refuse to do so for patient privacy reasons, or simply do not see it as a priority - besides which there is heavy pressure from Big Pharma not to do so, and if you've ever been to a doctors office and notice how many freebies are laying around given as gifts by such companies, not to mention the junkets, vacation trips, and other things by which they get their hooks in, you can imagine a certain reluctance to buck the harness there.
Even the CDC admits that on average less than 10% of adverse vaccine reactions are ever reported at all.

Take all that into account, and what it comes to is that one is five times more likely to die of the "cure" (which doesn't even work) than what it is supposed to protect against - them ain't good odds, are they ?
In fact it's so obvious even someone as batshit- as Bachmann can figure it out.

Yeah, it SHOULD be a choice, and primarily an INFORMED one, as opposed to ad-campaign lies.
And Perry trying to mandate it sent me berserk, Anarchists in general get kinda snippy about the word "mandatory" to begin with, and watching the horror unfold in both a professional and personal kinda way really sent me into spirals of rage.

Shannon was twenty, now mind she was only "niece" in a technical sense, as she was the daughter of my sisters former husband after they divorced, making her half-sister to them, but far as I was concerned, close enough - besides, despite considering me to be of dubious character and weird, there was mutual acceptance of the notion although not on the best of terms...
I think that was a comfort to her, towards the end, cause when she started getting really ill, all the folks who had kinda pushed her into this while dismissing my warnings all the sudden wanted nothing to do with her, lingering guilt about it making them flee her presence, and even her own parents the few times they visited were obviously uncomfortable and "couldn't wait to get away", which totally devastated her emotionally - I paid for a phone for her room, and when she had difficulties later, sent a voice activated headset for it next day air, we spent a lot of time on the phone, since she didn't have anyone else to talk to - and she knew, underneath the saccarine facade that the staff was holding up, that they'd already written her off, and was pretty insulted about it, and soon after her own parents bailed out on visiting her she just kinda... gave up, nothing I could say would encourage her, and eventually she said goodbye and clicked off the headset.
Next day she was gone.

I've seen too goddamn many things like that in my time, and not a one hurts any less, hell if it ever did I would start worryin about my own sanity, but there's no excuse for this, NONE.
And every time I see Perrys grinning mug, I wanna smash it through the back of his head, oh yes.

But he's just a politician, doing what they do - I hold Merck ultimately responsible.

It's from a speech Barack Obama gave, either Wed or Thurs, I believe. After telling us that this bill, which still has yet to be introduced by anyone in the House , is no politics, no games, but just something we NEED, so it should be passed immediately, he's playing pure politics, and making it all about him.

So, love him, give him " the win ", and get this bill passed, but he tells the GOP to not play politics ?

This is Clinton-esque in its comedy.

The "GOP" ? Or simply average, red blooded Americans? Seems to me they love their country plenty, but not the over reaching arm of the govt so much.

It's not so much the tax rates, but how reckless govt is in spending the people's $. The govt's appetite for OUR money has no limit.

Hello,

I see, so you created the quote out of whole cloth, based on your personal re-interpretation of his words.

Quote:

"I love the sharp cutting sword,
for the blood that it brings,
I love the arrow fleet,
for the song that it sings,
I love the warrior for his glory,
won in victory bloody and gory,
And I will always find some reason
for them to be tasked to kill."

--Auraptor, in his signature line, as re-interpreted by Anthony.

What happened to individual rights, Anthony? Should we not have the right to go where we want to? We CAN'T afford to move away, and would be doing so at great hardship. But if I feel this country is going in such a terrible direction and I have no control over it, have I not the right to go where I am less ashamed to live and have less fear that those in power will become more and more oppressive as time goes on?

Jezus, Geezer, not conservative ENOUGH!? Scary. He might mean only the illegal immigrant thing, which I can understand as it goes against current fashion, but if he means in other ways, I can't conceive of anyone MORE conservative (as the word has come to mean) than Perry! Frem's quote is particularly cogent in this respect, for me!

Would be great, however, if enough people like Raptor disliked his immigration policy--or anything else about him--that it split the party so that enough stay home who didn't get "their guy" nominated. That'd be cool. And it looks like, given the way things are going, they are getting more and more "conservative" to the point where NOBODY will please them. They'd never have TOUCHED Reagan! Speaking of which, here's what they'd think of him:

Hello,

Stopping you from going and imploring you to stay are two different things, and you ought not to equate them. I selfishly desire that you stay and fight the good fight, rather than flee and leave society to rot.

I can't make you, nor would I, but I will implore you. And if you truly believe in self-sacrifice for the good of the whole, then you will stay and make this country better even at personal cost. I do not think evil will win for long, if good people stay and stand.

Unfortunately, because I'm loth to agree with him on anything, Raptor IS right that his quote is directly from Lord of the Rings. It has absolutely NOTHING, however to do with Obama. I didn't mention it before because it sickens me to connect him with anything Tolkein. But yes, I own the Sil and I recognize it.

It's Faramir's quote, speaking of his love for the tower Minas Tirith, or essentially his nation, Gondor (the remnant of Númenor). To put it in perspective, the full quote is "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

In Sindarith:

Ú-velon vegil faen an ristas dín,
law bilinn an lagoras dín,
law vaethor an aglar dín.
Melon na-erui di i hain veriar: i Vinas Dúnedain.

Direct translation:

I-don't-love sword radiant for sharpness its,
nor arrow for swiftness its,
nor warrior for glory his.
I-love only this what they defend: the Tower-city [of] West-men.

Which doesn't change the fact that, from all I've read of him, Raptor DOES love the sword, arrow and warrior, and could care less about what they defend. You should use the Sindarith translation, Raptor, at least nobody would know what it meant and wouldn't laugh at it being used as a signature by YOU. You have no concept of the kind of man Faramir was, nor would the land of Gondor welcome you in any way! You have far more in common with the orcs of Mordor, and not even the sustained evil of a Nazgul.

Jezus, "stupid face"??? To quote yourself: "You're a 6 year old, and it shows."

This was the quote I was contesting. When he admitted finally that the President never said it, I re-wrote Raptor's signature line as commentary on what I thought of his misuse.

As you can see, what I posted ( just as I saw it on other sites ) was damn close to the actual quote. I don't see the point of claiming I "made up" the quote, when it's crystal clear that I did no such thing. This anal retentive display on your part, Anthony, is over doing things a bit, to say the least.

Storybook - you're quick to attack Perry, though you really have no idea why. Oh, except that he's a Republican... go figure. You'll notice that I don't care myself, because I'm still not sold on Perry. Do yourself a favor, and do some investigative reporting, why don't ya ? Then come back and tell us what you've found. Or kindly shut the hell up.

Niki - You know orcs are a hybrid of elves, and possibly men, right? No one is sure exactly how Morgoth crafted this race, long before Sauron took up shop in Mordor.

But as usual, you could not be more wrong about me and my quoting Farimir. It's specifically why I chose it, instead of anything uttered by the Uruk-Hai.

This is yet another glaring example of just how wrong you are about me.

You wouldn't even make an hors d'oeuvre for an Uruk-Hai...and given their inability to say anything quotable, it would be a stretch to find anything TO quote from them. No, Faramir said essentially "because war is UPON us"...you would CHOOSE to go to war; ergo, you are a creature of Mordor, not of Gondor.

Well, looks like it took less than a week for their Rising Star to start falling:
Quote:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's presidential campaign was dealt a worrying blow Saturday when he finished in a distant second place to businessman Herman Cain in a closely watched straw poll in Florida.

Cain won 37% of the 2,657 votes cast in the straw poll conducted at Presidency 5, a three-day convention sponsored by the Republican Party of Florida that brought thousands of party activists to Orlando.

Perry's campaign had courted Presidency 5 delegates for weeks and printed up glossy fliers that were distributed throughout the convention hall in Orlando, but the Texas governor captured just 410 votes, or 15.4% of the vote. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/24/cain-upsets-perry-as-w

Meanwhile, back to the subject: It appears Perry isn't doing so hot in other places, either:
Quote:

Mitt Romney didn’t disappoint on his home turf this weekend, receiving 51 percent of the votes at the Michigan Straw Poll, a wide victory over Texas Gov. Rick Perry who garnered just 17 percent. ..... Romney’s win comes despite his campaign’s decision to forgo participation in any state Straw Polls, saying they would instead focus their financial strength on winning primaries and caucuses.
.....
{Rick Perry said}"I know what I believe in, and I’m going to stand on that belief every day,” he said. “I will guide this country with a deep deep rudder.” http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/09/on-home-turf-romney-preva
