This idea has been floating around on the inter-webs and it seems to be gaining traction... just wanted your opinions.

A couple of things to consider:

If the BATFE is shut down, then I think its "duties" would be relegated to the FBI. On the whole, the FBI is a whole lot "better" at their jobs. Not a good thing. (Once heard that the BATFE was where the idiots who couldn't hack it in the FBI or CIA ended up..)

I agree with the sentiment that the BATFE should be a supermarket-chain, not a federal agency.

Would the disillusion of the BATFE end the gun-control debate? (I.e. finally stomp the anti-gunners, and the gun-grabbers into the dirt?) Probably not. Even with all of the evidence showing that an armed populace reduces crime, and the common sense idea that its better to be armed has NOT made the gun-control people any more intelligent.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think the agency is not needed.

But this is the first I've heard about some kind of movement to dissolve the agency.

When is a huge, major, powerful government agency shut down? They make NEW ones, not get rid of the old. Nah, lots of noise, little substance in my opinion--something the government is best at.

A supermarket called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives? Heck, I'd shop there.

Wasn't it FBI who executed some folks at Ruby Ridge, too?

I guess the question is,

What service does the BATFE provide?

Also. The BATFE is incompetent. Ruby Ridge, Waco, Fast and Furious.. and Im sure there are hundreds of other instances where it didn't make the news...

So, is it worth having OUR money be pumped into an agency that doesn't provide any redeemable service.. or is it better to keep them around BECAUSE they are incompetent?

Ya'll know where I stand on the whole gun-control thing... however, since intrusive government is a way of our life RIGHT NOW... better to have idiots trying to deprive us of our rights, or give that power to half-way competent jackboots?

Maybe we just need to defund the BATFE to the point that it can no longer be intrusive... still keep it around for political purposes (until such time people shake the gun-control thing), rather than scrap it completely.

Yet, given that the BATFE is willing to do just about anything to push their ideology of a disarmed American society... (including sending guns to Mexico to push for more gun-control... whereby, those guns they pushed ended up in the hands of the cartels who killed innocent Mexican national civilians, and a few of our own... but I digress..)

Ideas?

I mean, we could defund the BATFE to the point of a non-issue, prosecute every member of the government who supported their operations, and institute Constitutional-carry across the nation... but Im getting all Tea-Party-ish..

So?

Well, if that's your standard for whether or not we should keep a thing around, I'd say we could save a HELL of a lot more money - and LIVES - by getting rid of the Pentagon and about 90% of the military. After all, they've killed far more people by "accident" than any other group in our nation's history.

Dude.

Glad you are starting to see that government is not the solution.

We should have a cup of "TEA", and talk this over.

"A supermarket called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives? Heck, I'd shop there."

I know, right?

Maybe Im crazy, or an idiot... (oh man, am I going to get jumped on for saying that)

BUT...

I tend to believe that MOST people are generally good. So, having a store that sold tobacco, firearms, explosives, alcohol, knives, crossbows, and fireworks.. (provided some of those you would need an instant backround check) WOULDN'T be a bad idea.

Hell, add tools, electronics, propane, comic books, fresh meat... you would have the most perfect store EVER.

But thats me.

Im sure there are other things one could add. Like clothing, a haberdashery.. etc?

Can you imagine it? Women/girls could drop us off at these super places, and we would spend all day.

Right there, I have solved one of the intimacy battles of the sexes.

Naw.. it just solved the whole "I want to go shopping and you HAVE to come along and blah blah blah..."

Then it would be.. "SURE! Sweetheart, you go to Forever 21... and I'M going to the BATFE! Have fun!"

Dude.

Not sure where you got the idea that I thought government was always the solution. I was pretty extremely against the idea of our "government solution" to Iraq and Afghanistan, and I've not exactly been a supporter of our government solution to Libya, either.

Of course, we can pretty clearly see that the free market is offering no solutions on jobs, healthcare, retirement, infrastructure, the environment, or anything else.

And you'll have to share your tea with someone else. In America, we drink Coke!

I think you guys all found something you agree on, it will be the new onestop shop sensation.

As for the BATF, I think closing it down is a good idea, I hadn't thought much about the agency until recently, doesn't seem too important, the only time I hear about them is when they screw up, so yeah, lets dismantle it. If any of those things still need to be done then the FBI or whoever else can do it. That would save some money and having the store would generate more money. :)
