"Several human rights groups and congressional leaders called on Montana U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull to step down
Thursday in light of the racist e-mail about President Obama the federal judge forwarded to several friends."

Hmmm. Montana has its own genteel ways. I wonder who ratted him out?
(*A racist Obama joke. This particular link repeats the joke he sent.)

OK. Should the Judge step down?

America loves a winner!

"A little boy said to his mother; 'Mommy, how come I'm black and you're white?' " the e-mail joke reads. "His mother replied, 'Don't even go there Barack! From what I can remember about that party, you're lucky you don't bark!' "

Why is the little boy lucky he doesn't bar... OH! I get it!

Yeah, that's mean. And childish. How old is this judge... 8 ?

The judge is an idiot, but *IS* the joke really "racist", or is it more *sexist*?

Think about it. Nowhere in the joke is anything disparaging said about any black person - what's implied is that the white woman fucks anyone and everything, including black men and dogs. It's more of an attack on the mother than the son.

Should he lose his job over it? Depends. Was it a firing offense? Was it sent on a government computer? Did he break any clearly-defined workplace rules? If so, he COULD lose his job, but he doesn't HAVE TO lose his job. He might make it easier on himself if he were to resign and get out of the spotlight, plus he'd likely still get all his cushy retirement and benefits if he did.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

If it was done from an office resource, that would be the beginning and end of the story for me.

However, even if this was done as a private citizen, I'd be rather suspicious of this judge and his rulings from here on out regardless of whether he was fired or not. Given that blemish on his character, it may be best if he sought other work.

I certainly wouldn't vote for him or want any elected official to appoint him to a position where he might have to judge women.

That's awful. If he sent it from his work computer then there would be grounds to persue it, but if he sent it from home they can't really do anything I'd guess. I'm with Anthony and Niki, I'd be hesitant about having legal/courtroom interactions with this judge but I don't think they can fire him unless it happened at work, but how old is he? Maybe he can just resign and stuff, he could make stupid excuses and call it retirement if he's old enough.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

In other sources, it was revealed that the judge sent the 'joke' out from his courthouse email address. Oops. Not only does your email belong to your employer if it is done on your employer's system/ server, even worse, as a public employee any and all of emails are public record. And this would certainly give anyone a reason to search his entire email record.

"According to AJS, federal judges cannot be removed through the complaint process, although a complaint can be referred to the House of Representatives for consideration of impeachment."

I don't know if what he did is impeachable. Furthermore, I don't think there would be political will in the republican House to remove him even if it was. But he deserves to resign if nothing else as acknowledgment of his own sheer stupidity. Cmon' dude, you should know to use your personal home email for stuff like that.

As for all the cases that have come before him, I imagine a lot of lawyers are already looking into it. Or at least if it was CA they would be.

This being a MAJOR problem with our so-called justice system.
Yes, Judges need a certain amount of autonomy to do their job, but when even the most outrageous abuses are so routinely ignored and properly addressing them is all but impossible, corruption follows surely as day does dawn, this was a known flaw in the Constitution before it was even fully written.
See Antifederalist Papers 78-83 for more than you ever wanted to know on THAT topic.

Oh how I wish - remember those two PA judges who were CONVICTED of jailing kids for cash ?
We had the very devil of a time forcing the PA system to even look INTO, much less overturn, those cases, and had to do it one by one cause they wouldn't even do it in bulk.

Ain't no justice, there's just us.
