Hello,

If the concerns about carcinogens in 'caramel coloring' are valid, then I'm a dead man. I've consumed tons of Coca Cola in my life.

However, I am surprised that the soda companies are resisting this. Wouldn't it save them money to eliminate 'coloring' from their process? Would people really object to a less dark beverage? Does the coloring have a flavor that would alter the experience for the consumer?

I wonder. I'd love to try a Coke that wasn't colored and see what it was like.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

My allergist told me I shouldn't have anything with caramel coloring as it's made from burnt wheat and I'm allergic to wheat. It sounds like they may have some added steps to some of the product. *

I want companies to generically sell consumables without added coloring and I wonder specifically about colas and creme sodas and what they would be like without coloring.

The amounts they mention might seem low '29 milligrams of 4-MI per day under Proposition 65' but the samples I work with are often far far less than that. To me anyway, 29mg is a huge amount.

"Guengerich said in a statement this week, “The amounts of 4-MI consumed in beverages (and food) is extremely low compared to the high, long-term levels given the mice and rats, and extrapolation of either any harmful or beneficial results from these rodent models to humans at this time is not scientifically valid.”"

That's true, but not in the way he thinks. Often very high doses will shut down cellular mechanisms that might be damaged, and lower levels in a particular biologically critical range are more deadly.

* "CSPI also urged the FDA to change the “caramel coloring” label to “chemically modified caramel coloring” or “ammonia-sulfite process caramel coloring” to avoid any confusion with consumers over the coloring’s makeup."

CSPI again.

Sorry, but according to them, if you eat or drink anything that tastes good, you're gonna die.

You don't remember Pepsi Clear? Pepsi will be very glad to hear that, because they don't want anyone to remember that fiasco!

While not entirely free of its own partisanship, they do point out many of the flaws, distortions and outright lies CSPI has engaged in, a lot of em quite blatant - my own research has indicated that CSPI itself is kind of a false-front for a pack of radical vegans who are as crazy as PETA, just slicker about it.

That's just a smidgen, Mikey, but they're not what they pretend to be - I've ever held a grudge against them cause they're one of the ones who supported the introduction of trans-fats as a "healthier" alternative, and so on, and so forth.

As for cola - I'd be far more worried about HFCS, and other unfriendly content than artificial coloring, which sure, belongs on the not-healthy list, but in comparison to the other risks, belongs near the bottom in priority.

Just to point out -

While 26mg might not seem like much - it about 1/3 the dose of a baby aspirin.

A single baby aspirin per day has a measurable effect on men (reduced heart attack) and on women (reduced stroke). A SMALL 81mg DOSE OF ASPIRIN every day has a measurable effect on full-sized adults.

What do you think a similar-sized (order of magnitude) dose of potential carcinogen has on adults? Or on children?

And I'd also like to point out - these products that people eat and drink have more in common with gasoline or nylon than they do with food.

I gave up soda last year. No reason, other than unneeded expense and intake of chemicals. If I have a six pack in a month it is a surprise.

STORYMARK

I go through cycles with soda/cola. Sometimes, its all I want to dring, and Ill have one after another. Then I get tired of it, and drink nothing but water for weeks, then I go back.

I really need to get a better handle on it, though.

Note to self: Come up with some pity-baiting sig line so everyone sees how persecuted poor wittle me is. Then I can be just like Rappy!

I don't drink soda pop at all, ... ever. I never got used to fizz as a child. I could have had it if I wanted to, but why would I want something that hurt my body going down and then hurt again coming back up my nose? So I never did like pop. The only fizz I drink is in sparkling soft and hard cidar, very slowly I might add or else I have trouble with it in my nose. Even the slowly consumed small amounts I drink on rare occasions hurt going down and every time I ask myself why I'm doing this.

Interestingly my little brother can't handle fizz either, won't touched the stuff.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

I rarely drink coke or any fizzy drinks. Coke occasionally as a pick me up or a mixer for spirits.

I've heard stories of dripping coke corroding metals, not sure if it is true.

Once again, its preferable to limit foods and drinks that contain artificial colourings, sweeteners or flavourings.

Re whoever made the comment about whatever tasting good is banned, its worth remembering how our taste buds have been manipulated by food companies so that every things has to be 'double the flavour' so that we can rarely appreciate the subtelty of natural flavours any more.

By the way = real caramel is sugar, butter and cream.
