Especially for you Anthony - in light of the ludicrous extremes of the "War on (some) Drugs" negatively impacting folks with respiratory conditions...

The Predators of Marengo County

Quote:

“What brings you to Demopolis?”

The question seemed harmless, as did the questioner, Sgt. Tim Soronen of the Demopolis, Alabama police department. Diane Avera, the 45-year-old grandmother from Meridian, Mississippi to whom that question was posed, couldn’t see any harm in answering it candidly.

“I came over to buy some Sudafed for our scuba diving trip this weekend, since we can’t buy it in Meridian anymore,” Mrs. Avera explained.

Soronen asked Avera if she knew it was against the law to cross the state line to buy Sudafed.

“No, sir, I did not know,” the startled woman replied.

“I need you to step out of the car,” Soronen demanded.

“For what? I swear I didn’t know. What did I do?” Avera asked in alarm.

“You came to Demopolis to buy some Sudafed,” came the curt response. “Step to the back of the truck.”

Before the sun set on July 29, 2010, Diane Avera was in the Marengo County Jail, where she would remain for forty days. At one point she was shackled to a restraint chair for 17 hours. During that time she was denied water or access to a bathroom. She also developed edema in her feet. Edema-related blood clots have been identified as the cause of death for several of the inmates who have perished while chained to the “Devil’s Chair.”

That could happen to you, to any of us - out of the pure ridiculousness of the drug war, somehow things have been transmogrified to a war upon anyone not wearing a badge, who since they have failed to stand against and/or refused to enforce such jackassery, and have chosen to "just follow orders", I think we oughta step up the game against them in the only way us mere peons have left...
I've contacted locals of the area and discussed using the tactics of hacking the police budget in response to such behavior, as we have done here in Washtenaw County, which has done WONDERS for the behavior and professionalism of our local police force, beleive it.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

That is a pretty outrageous way to treat someone. Especially for such a petty offense.

And what's with this torture chair? Do you really need to chain someone to a chair in a jail cell? What was the concern?

Innocence before proven guilty.

If they really thought it was a thing, they would have contacted the police in her local jurisdiction who would have gotten a search warrant to search her house, and she would have been charged because the prosecutor would have been able to build a case.

They let her go, so clearly that didn't happen.

If you mean the blog itself, maybe check the links for a legitimate newspaper source if necessary.

"I came here to buy sudafed" means, in cop, "I cam here to buy sudafed so I can make meth in my bathtub."

I find it hard to begrudge a filthy hippy their joint, or Rush Limabugh his Oxy. Thus, I am against the war on drugs. However, on the rare occasion I encounter a methmouth on the street, I enthusiastically support the war on drugs.

I have some pretty mixed feelings about "the war on drugs". But this situation is silly.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

I did look for other sites. It looks like she was tried and found guilty. Her case is currently under appeal.

Still, if the story about shackling is true, its pretty disgusting.

Its not illegal to buy it here, but I think chemists take your medicare details to keep track of stockpilers.

Well considering just how hard the Gov is limited, and/or trying to limit, peoples ability to get their hands on things they need, I don't freakin blame anyone for stocking up - look at that bullshit they pulled with asthma inhalers for example, I can tellya for a fact MOST of the folks who were stockpiling those ain't makin meth, they're concerned that they're gonna get financially screwed, handed over on a plate to our financially rapacious medical care system, for something that is gonna do exactly jack diddly shit to even inconvenience the bad guys.
Hell, I had to stockpile Lugols Iodine before they banned it, for my medical cabinet.
It's insanity, is what it is, and as for why they do that kinda stuff, known as TORTURE in any country but ours, once you are in their custody, it's to "encourage" you to confess, or plead it, to break your will and get you to surrender your rights, or at least any pretense that they might be respected.

Which is why I consider that here-and-now-is-not-the-place-to-argue-it concept bullshit, cause once they got you in their custody, the whole game changes, and a lawsuit will not undo the damage they do to you.

Did you ever considered that in some cases, like this one the police might be telling truth and the women is really guilty and just trying to gain sympathy?

If that turns out to be the case it would mean she is playing you.

Oh, and your Lugols Iodine is not banned only limited to under one fluid ounce per transaction.

Magons: I don't know. The fact that their blood results came back clean of meth to me is indicative.

There's some very obvious symptoms associated with someone coming down from a meth high that aren't mentioned, and no one actually sampled her house or property for meth cooking residue.

That would be slam dunk evidence to me, based on science. Confessions are also somewhat condemning, unless there's reason to believe the confessions were coerced, as in this case. With these revelations, the entire case sounds like it's circumstantial. Both sides are impossible to prove without further information.

The War on Some Drugs has gone on far too long. I remember when president Nixon declared it. Nixon. Ridiculous federal bufoonery. And a wonderful excuse to create another federal agency.

Remember when the feds tried to create a War on Alcohol? Yeah, didn't work out so well. Wherever there is demand, the market will create a supply.

Stop wasting my tax dollars.

Oh I considered it, looked it over, and no-sale, the case reeks of bullshit and coerced confession under duress.
As to the notion of police credibility, I give their words no more credence than I would the average street hustler, because as we continue to turn their surveillence society against them, it becomes ever more clear that they DO lie that much, that they ARE that brutal, that corrupt, undeniably so, on a wholesale, institutional level.
Taking a cop at his word is like taking Pravda at face value back in the sixties.

They're human too, and themselves trapped within a broken and corrupt system - you get a few decent examples, hell we got a couple here (Roy and Krings) but frankly it's not a few rotten apples, it's the barrel that's rotten, and inevitable corrupts the apples.

I highly reccommend you watch The Wire - I didn't just watch it, I *LIVED* in the area that takes place in, DURING most of the events the stuff in the show is based on (they actually toned down a lot of it), and between the epic corruption of the Baltimore City police dept, compounded by that of the now infamous Prince Georges County, and then topped off by the crap which goes on in Detroit....
People keep telling me it ain't all that bad, but I feel like Lot lookin for honest men in sodom and gomorrah, where are these supposedly decent cops, cause DAMNED if I can find any, even our two local best-of-show have their little foibles, like shaking down small time dealers for their roll, stuff like that.

So where are these mythical beings then ?

Well, there's the rub - probably.
I like to leave a little wiggle room for the world to surprise me by being better than I expected, and sometimes, only sometimes.. it does.

And ain't that just the neatest thing ?

As to the rest, the past decade has shown us that the real question isn't whether one is paranoid or not, it's whether one is paranoid ENOUGH - the stuff the public knows now, those of us sayin it back before all this mess came out were considered nutters, you know.
