Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

This thread probably should have been started a while ago (around the time of the GOP primaries!), but better late than never, I'll get the ball rolling:

Bobby Jindal - "I suspect that many in the Obama administration really don't believe in private enterprise. At best, they see business as something to be endured so that it can provide tax money for government programs."

ETA:

By the way this isn't supposed to be just a thread of 'stupid things conservatives/liberals say', I'm interested in the idea of politicians specifically taking absurd positions to gain popularity with their base. Romney touched on this quite honestly during the GOP primary when he talked about the pressure to make outrageous attacks on Obama and make himself shoot up in the polls. He said: "I'm not willing to light my hair on fire to try and get support." This is a thread of politicians lighting their hair on fire.

Hello,

Can it just be stupid things politicians say to appeal to their base, and not specific to a party?

I think in this respect Republicans deserve a thread of their own

I won't complain though, if you have some quotes in mind. In fact I'd be interested.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Hello,

Nancy Pelosi said 500 million Americans lose their jobs every day that an economic recovery package is not passed.

Alan Grayson (sp?) said the Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.

Van Jones (are you considered a politician if you're just a White House advisor?) said Libertarians hate the people, the brown folk, the gays, the lesbians, the people with piercings and tattoos. He admitted his statement was 'overly broad' but said 'that's American politics. We mix it up.'

I think all politicians say some pretty stupid things to rile up their base.

Yup, all politicians say stupid things, and everyone's fair game, in my opinion. I wlll say, however, that Grayson's remark isn't wholly stupid; I think they don't CARE if you die from lack of health insurance, but no, I don't think they want you to--at least while you're of earning age and not until you need Social Security. THEN, yes, I do think they want "fewer people" around. Everything else quoted here so far is pure bullshit, and they should be ashamed, all of them.

True. I think the Pelosi one was more in the 'gaffe' category, though undoubtedly hilarious.

The Grayson one was similar to the 'death panels' claim. I don't see that as 'stupid', more hyperbole/fear stoking.

The Van Jones one fits the bill, but as you say he's not really a politician, he's an activist.

ETA:

So I guess what I was asking for was actually fairly specific - not just 'stupid things conservatives/liberals say'. Probably should articulate that better in the opening post.

It's not personal. It's just war.

And here I didn't realize Stalin was still speaking. If he is, the GOP is all ears!

You know, this could go on all day if we wanted to quote Michelle Bachmann or Rick Perry... ""Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too" —Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, getting her John Waynes mixed up during an interview after launching her presidential campaign in Waterloo, Iowa, where she grew up. The beloved movie star John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa, three hours away. The John Wayne that Waterloo was home to is John Wayne Gacy, a notorious serial killer.

But recent stuff from Romney provides sufficient entertainment:
Quote:

Despite the fact that we as a nation just celebrated donuts with their own holiday (the most sacred day on the American calendar right after Christmas, the Fourth of July, and the Breaking Bad premiere), it would appear that Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney does not know the magical be-holed pastries are. The fine folks over at BuzzFeed noticed an awkward moment on the campaign trail. Live on CNN, Romney attempted to compliment a group of Americans on the wonderful donuts they had given him. Unfortunately, he couldn’t remember what the darn things were called.
Video:

Then there's Romney's love of "sport", rather than "sports": "In addition to my disappointment over their effort to get more American kids into sport, I chafed at the dollars going to the USOC as part of our joint marketing agreement."

"Ted Williams famously said that the hardest thing to do in sport is hit a baseball…"

"He explained that in Norway, it was against national law to serve alcohol in sport venues. The logic was that they did not wish youth to associate alcohol with sport."

"Don had a long history in sport."

"We were seeking approval for seven new sport events including women's bobsled and men's and women's skeleton. "

Is "sport" something only rich people say? Or something like the missing "the" in Brits and Aussies saying "Mom went to hospital", or the Irish "Mom went in hospital"? Now Idon't know what "men's and women's skeleton" is...could someone educated me? Or am I just too lower-middle-class to get it?

This is true. There are so few Republican Quotes that fit this thread that its better to have them all in one place.

If you included Democrats you'd basically have to just direct quote 85-90% of their collected works...written, spoken, or in song.

For example. Obama says Republicans ate dinner and then left without paying...after which he ate dinner and left without paying. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/06/white-house-forgets-to-pa

Does it have to be said by a politician?

B/c I have a good one here, which isn't about politicians or by a politician: "If you included Democrats you'd basically have to just direct quote 85-90% of their collected works...written, spoken, or in song."

Jindal is right, Barry is the phoney who's been spitting out BULLSHIT! How much money has Barry's admin given failed solar panel companys, where are the shovel ready jobs? By the way, Barry became pro gay marriage to gain popularity with his base.

So, clearly pandering to a minority group for the sole sake of gaining votes is just fine in your book?

I'll remember that for future reference.

Hello,

Saying you believe in equal rights for minorities is always saying something smart. It's choosing to back the winning idea.

It's too bad that there are many Americans hungry for the destruction of personal liberty to such an extent that they want to tell you who a competent adult should be allowed to marry.

Yup, we say 'sport' instead of 'sports' and we can drop the 'the' as you described.

Would you always put the 'the' in? ie "John went to ]i]the school"

I notice you miss some prepositions we would not ie 'Write me' would a;ways be 'write to me' (athough we wouldn't say 'call to me'

Don't know what the skeletons thingee refers to, although not use of the context.

Nothing to say about stupid politicans that hasn't already been said.
