This kind of thing is bad if you don't want a war to start: last week, two Iranian fighter jets fired their machine guns at an American Predator drone in international airspace. The attack was kept quiet until right now.

CNN reports that the drone was unarmed and conducting "routine maritime surveillance," and that it was not hit by Iranian fire. Whether or not the Pentagon is telling the truth about the drone's mission is questionable—there's every reason to suspect it was snooping around Iranian assets. We don't fly these things to photograph fish. It's also uncertain whether Iran missed on purpose—it's hard to imagine missing a Predator drone, which isn't capable of any kind of evasive maneuvering comparable to a fighter.

Washington is not happy: "It doesn't matter, they fired on us," says one unnamed US intelligence officer. The US has asked Iran for an explanation but hasn't heard back, which is just kind of sad and embarrassing. [CNN]

Hello,

I imagine we'd shoot at any Iranian drones that came snooping around.

So, what's Obama doing, trying to snoop around another country's border?

He's already delivered our top of the line super stealth drone... was he trying to give them another one ?

Do you really believe the things you say, or do you just say them to achieve a desired result?

Yes, he is trying to snoop.

No, he would prefer they don't get another one.

If they wanted to shoot it down they easily could have. They were just being provacative, fuckin' with us. It helps their jingoistic propaganda efforts, and takes their citizens' minds off of the many shortages they're experiencing under the sanctions.

"WE" say the drone was well outside their waters, some 16 miles ( radio report ) off shore. THEY say ? No idea. No word. Nothing.

I guess that points both why they didn't shoot it down, and whether or not it was invading their space. I'm wondering if they even TOLD their public, seeing how neither pilot of either jet was capable of shooting down a slow moving, barely maneuverable drone. I mean seriously...talk about being crappy shots!

@Anthony - that I even bother responding to you in the first place is just shy of amazing. Now you want a heads up on when I'm being sarcastic or not ?

This sort of thing was common from Iraq in the years before the 2003 invasion. They used to try and shoot down US and British planes all the time. Every now and then they'd get close and we'd respond by bombing SAM sites.

Iran is just rattling sabres, trying to look tough and capable. A war would not start from this sort of thing and they know better then to try anything more serious...like attacking a ship or tanker or something.

They know Isreal is coming, we know Isreal is going, so nobody wants something that escalates and spoils the start of the big show.

So much of what I say does not seem to penetrate to your inner brain, it only SEEMS ridiculous , which causes you to be baffled.

As so often is the case here, my views are twisted and inverted, whether by intent or mishap, I cannot say.

Note yourself on that one, skippy.

@ HERO - Yeah, how soon so many forget. Iraq had N and S no fly zones, after the first Gulf War. They kept radar locking on our planes, just to F with us.

Maybe, a few times, they fired ? I can't recall. But that was a whole different set of circumstances.

Here, Iran isn't IN any no fly situation. Our drone was in Int'l waters ( or so we're told ). Iran ( allegedly ) fired on US. I doubt that one of our drones , out over the water, had much in the way of ordinance...

Buzzing the enemy is a game Ivan use to play w/ us often, back during the Cold War...but shooting ? Even at an unmanned vehicle ? That's... well, it's different.

Who here said anything about "the fog of war", besides you?

Are you trying to say that the shoot-down of an Iranian airliner by the U.S. Navy in 1988 was due to "the fog of war"?

Which war, exactly, would that be that we were in "the fog of"?

So you were trying to ridicule the idea of shooting at a drone as being part of "the fog of war", yet you yourself are trying to claim that the U.S. shooting down an Iranian airliner over the Strait of Hormuz (far removed from the Iran/Iraq border) was a part of "the fog of war"?

And then you bring up an incident from more than a year earlier to try to bolster your "fog of war' falsehood? Are you trying to say that the shoot-down was retaliation for the Stark? Doesn't really play into the whole "fog of war" narrative, does it?

The Stark was fired on by Iraqis, by the way. Not Iranians.

You Republicans have a hard time telling your bad guys apart, don't you?

So two isolated events, more than a year apart, fall under the "fog of war" heading.

But Iran isn't allowed to claim the same? After all, we're at war with so many of their neighbors at the moment, in one form or another, declared or not, human or drone. Can't they claim "fog of war" for shooting at our drone?

And wouldn't "fog of war" cover everything that happened in Libya and everywhere else?

Yes. The USS Vincennes was under attack by Iranian Gunboats at the time. The aircraft was misidentified as an Iranian F-14.

The fault for the incident lies to some extent on both sides and also random chance.

A helicopter at high altitude off the Vincennes took small-arms fire from (as they said) Iranian patrol boats. After pursuing the patrol boats into Omani waters and being warned away, eventually the Vincennes pursued the patrol boats into Iranian territorial waters when it opened fire on the civilian flight. The Vincennes was in pursuit and in Iranian waters, not under attack .

I'd like to thank Rappy and "Hero" both for making my case for me. According to their arguments, Iran is completely innocent of any wrongdoing in this matter, because if they thought this drone was a U.S. warplane and they misidentified it, then the whole incident just comes down to "the fog of war" and no harm was done. After all, with all the threats against them, and all the violence and fighting in nations all around them, it's easy to understand why they thought they were under attack.

Thank you both for clarifying this matter.

I have just one more question -

Why did you keep this "pertinent" information hidden away for so long?

No 'case was made' . There was,in fact, an actual war going on , between Iraq and Iran, back in the 80's. When the USS Stark was hit by the Exocet missile , and when the Iranian jetliner was accidentally shot down.

Both incidents occurred in a theatre of war.

There was no 'war' going on, when the drone was shot at, in int'l waters. It wasn't shooting anyone, save for possibly by video.

According to the details, as they're known, Iran was completely and fully the aggressor here, and is fully at fault.

"When the USS Vincennes was hit by the Exocet missile ..."

Except it was the USS Stark and it was in 1987, not 1988 when the Vincennes shot down a large civilian passenger jet. And at that time, the Vincennes was in Iranian waters, and the passenger jet was in Iranian airspace.

Minor error, crossing up Vincennes w/ the Stark, and I think I did get the dates correct. Neither which were germane to the issue anyways, but thanks for the clarification.

Both incidents occurred in a theatre of war.

The areas around Iran are theatres of war. Iraq. Afghanistan. Perhaps you've heard of them.

There was no 'war' going on, when the drone was shot at, in int'l waters. It wasn't shooting anyone, save for possibly by video.

Wait, a drone was shot at "in int'l waters"? Hell, that's no concern at all, then. After all, if it was shot at in international waters, it had already crashed!

And I can't be sure, but I don't believe the Iranian airliner was shooting at anyone when it was shot down, either.

According to the details, as they're known, Iran was completely and fully the aggressor here, and is fully at fault.

You have a habit of not getting the details right, though, you have to admit. Vincennes, Stark, what's the difference, right?

But you are absolutely right when you say you've made no case.

Really? You got the dates correct by saying they were "in the 80s"? You got the DECADE correct, at least.

And if they're not germane to the issue, why did you bring them up?

You have a habit of bringing things up, getting your ass handed to you on details and facts, and then claiming that the things you brought up never mattered in the first place.

But yes, the Vincennes being in Iranian waters and shooting down a civilian airliner in Iranian airspace *IS* quite a bit more an egregious fuck-up than Iran shooting at - and not hitting - a U.S. unmanned drone in international airspace.

If anyone's ass got handed to them, it was clearly you, Kwickie. But since you spend so much time sitting on your face, you didn't even notice it.

Figures.

Funny. You got your "facts" completely wrong, yet somehow you still think you're "winning".

Charlie Sheen was less deluded.
