Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Quote:OTOH, it's extremely doubtful we'll have a grassroots revolution, at least not here at the center of military, financial, and covert ops power. First of all, a true revolution would face the might of the US military and spy ops. Yanno, our military has taken out dozens if not hundreds of grassroots land reformers, social justice movements, and non-cooperative governments around the world. The only successful resistance has been at a distance, and backed by a large government. Do you really think the military/spy/propaganda machine would be ineffective here at home?

People revolt, rappy, not because they want handouts but because they need jobs that they can survive on... something the so-called "job creators" have been extremely poor with. What's driving the violent demonstrations and revolts across southern Europe, North Africa, and elsewhere is the 30-70% unemployment rate among the youth. Create jobs at a decent pay.... enough to afford a place to stay, food, security, medical care, and some entertainment and the problem will disappear. Don't, and you will have a revolt.

What you think of as a great distributed net is actually pretty centralized, and if you have PHYSICAL control of the big servers and hubs... as AT&T and Verizon do... you control the net. In the Egyptian Arab Spring, roughly 70% of the pro-demonstration tweets were tracked back to Israel. TPTB aren't as stupid as you think, and most young people have already sold their souls to Apple, Facebook, and Google. So much for anti-authoritarianism!
