Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Well, one year they had a story of an intra-hospital caroling contest and the 'x-ray department' showed up and did an acapella version of Carol of the Bells that blew me away. You could hear the snow blowing through the nighttime city. (After that stellar performance, as everyone stood around in shocked silence, the Anthony Edwards character said - 'they have way too much time on their hands.') I haven't been able to find anything like it since. This gives you a hint:

It's like we get to start fresh - peace on earth, good will toward men, and all - ever since I was a boy I felt that way. It is not the same without my mother and 2 sisters, I miss them terribly. So I live the best I can to honor them. My mom raised us as Catholics and instilled in us, along with my grandmother, a love for Christmas that lives within me to this day. And even though I'm not religious, I keep a place for them in my heavy heart and smile, because they are with me. I feel the losses thinking about them, and their absence, and how deeply I still miss them, and how I wish that we could be together again. Seems like we all have something in common. I was raised Catholic, too. And although no longer religious, I still remember the excitement of being old enough to go to midnight Mass, the deep quiet of a snowy night, the hymns and carols, the Christmas lights shining on (and sometimes through) the snow, the love that I felt from my mom and dad then. All I can do is try to re-create that for our child, and put up lights so that anyone who looks at our house will know that we took the time to be pretty, to put a smile on someone's face, just because its Christmas. Peace on earth and good will towards all. -------------- You can't build a nation with bombs. You can't create a society with guns.

I don't know if it's still as prevalent in English culture, today, as the show makes out, but they really do seem to be all in for Christmas across the pond. And even if it's just the show's take on it, kudos for them for at least trying to keep it something special. It plays to the kid in each of us, as I see it, who never grows up.
