Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Geezer, as Signy has pointed out the statements 'We've come a long way' and 'We've arrived' are logically different. I hope you will stop confusing the two. By all means lets celebrate how far we've come. But in a debate about whether or not we've arrived this point is simply irrelevant.

Quote:

So list the "enduring subtle, unspoken, coded forms of racism" that are endemic in the U.S.

As well as what's been mentioned I'll offer these examples:

Black vs. White marijuana use

Black vs. White arrest rate for possession of marijuana

Also this study where identical fake resumes were sent out with typical white names (Emily, Lisa) and typical black names (Lakisha, Jamal). The 'white' candidates were around 50% more likely to be called for interview: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/capideas/spring03/racialbias.html

But we weren't talking about whether society is still racist (to some extent), and disadvantaging to black people. We were talking about whether the left is unfair to paint the GOP as racist-tinged. So let's talk about that. Some examples of conservatives talking about unspoken, coded racism in the GOP:

From Wikipedia (Dog-whistle politics):
Quote:

In 1981, former Republican Party strategist Lee Atwater when giving an anonymous interview discussing the GOP's Southern Strategy (see also Lee Atwater on the Southern Strategy) said:
You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968, you can't say "nigger" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Nigger, nigger."

Conservative intellectual John Derbyshire on how racism influences conservative thought and policy, especially in the minds of older conservatives: http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0503/0503derbyshire.ht

Quote:

I frequently meet college students who tell me they are conservative, who have all the attributes of what seems to me a broadly conservative outlook on life and society, who want to read conservative publications... yet who have a deep dislike of many of the topics - not just the point of view, the actual topics - that interest older readers.

This shows up most especially in the area of race, and the penumbra of issues - immigration, for instance, or crime-fighting - that are associated with it. The kind of thoughtful and intelligent young people that NR would like to have as readers understand that there are problems and absurdities connected with race in our public life, and are happy to hear arguments pro and con about racial profiling, affirmative action, and so on. They laugh with us when we lampoon the more outrageous kind of black race hustler - a Sharpton, a Farrakhan, a Johnny Cochran. They are, however, determined to make the multiracial society work, they believe it can be made to work in spite of the hustlers and liberal guilt-mongers, and they are unwilling to read, say, or think anything that could be construed as unkind towards people of other races. The pessimism and cynicism on this topic that you rather commonly find among conservatives - including NR readers - born in 1930, or even 1950, are profoundly unappetizing to these younger conservatives."

This article sums the whole thing up well:

Thank you, KPO. You're more diplomatic and polite than I am; I admit I was reacting out of astonishment at Geezer's accusation, which still rather boggles my mind.

We HAVE come a long way, legally and societally. But we DO still have a long ways to go, and yes, Magons, I noticed the same thing about movies and TV. It's improved, but we're way behind.

Much the same is true of sex in our TV...everything as titillating as possible, but omigawd, no OVERT sexuality!! We're a funny people in some ways...

What, this one?

"unless you have some proof that they're not stuff made up by allthingsdemocrat.com to fire up the base, as you are trying to do by reposting them, they're meaningless."

I just laughed at that. Another one for the scrapbook of our resident unbiased centrist...

I don't know anyone here except for her and I don't relate to any of this and I can't even eat the food. And then she texted me pretty mad about it, and hasn't talked to me since, but that's because I'm an asshole. *shrug*

I wouldn't say that nobody has the time for it anymore, although I think you're onto something with having the patience for it. My brother and his wife seem great at making new friends. My step-brother too. My half-bro is a certified genius, but that comes with all the quirks of genius. He's VERY picky with who he chooses to spend his free time with, and that even includes his family. I've never watched Big Bang Theory, but his relationships with great looking girls seems to fit that profile... when he comes home for break he hardly goes out with old friends at all though. Then my bro with all the big problems really wants to have a lot of friends, but has no idea how to make them or maintain them. Then, of course, there's me... who does most of my talking outside of work on forums like these, but that's only when I'm drunk. When I'm sober, I don't want to really talk to anybody else at all. If I didn't have to work to live, I'd see even less people and I would be that much happier for it.

Tsk. Sounds like you need to work on your aim.

At least you'll always have that story about how you woke up in the woods naked with a deer carcass and started wondering if you're a lycanthrope.

I had to think about that one for a minute, but no... I don't think that was me. At least I know I saw that scene from Super Troopers, which itself I'm sure was a comedic reference to another movie I've never seen or don't remember now, although I suppose I can't in good conscience say that it never happened to me personally.

Did I tell you about the most disgusting thing I ever did before, and what makes it even more scary is that I have zero recollection or reason for how it happened?

As dirty as my crawlspace was after the mold removal and before I bleached it, I woke up one morning sleeping in it on top of a makeshift bed I took the time to put together out of pipe insulation I had down there before I installed it. Sure, I'd been drinking the night prior, but I hadn't done any drugs (even weed) for years. I've never been known or accused of sleepwalking before. But there I was, naked except for my boxers, sleeping it off in one of the most disgusting places I've ever known.

Thankfully, nothing similar has happened since either. I seriously was worried for about a month there that I was going senile at a very young age.

Now that I think about it, not only have I probably told you this before, but it's ringing certain bells and I think I've spoken about it recently. Would not surprise me at all if I posted about that very same thing somewhere earlier in this thread a few days ago. :(

I notice how in Brit culture, it's almost mandatory for the dipiction of mix race couples to be shown front and centre. From the London Olympic opening ceremony, to Dr Who, with Mickey and Rose.( Or Ricky and Rose, depending on one's universe )

Twenty or so years ago, it appeared to be almost forbidden. I remember watching the Love Boat back in the day. Every time an African American woman stepped on deck, which wasn't often, you'd know the bartender was going to get lucky.

Yeah...good ole Issac the bartender. As if HE were the only bartender on the entire ship.

The election of Obama certainly highlighted the racism that exists in the US, just like the election of a female PM here highlighted the misogyny.

Because they got ELECTED, right ?

Right. Don't get me started.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen
