I've hardly eaten anything today. I'm back down to 148lbs.

Maybe I'll be hungry tomorrow.

SIX, I'm worried that you may have lost a bit of direction on taking care of yourself?
Hey, you don't have to be perfect, just good enough not to screw yourself up permanently. Match your carbs to your activity, and your meds to your carbs. You'll get the hang of it and then it'll be like ...well, I don't want to say SECOND nature bc I sure don't want you to turn into that!

But you get the idea.

Yeah. I'm floundering a bit here. Nothing too serious, but I think we have to go to straight insulin for real, and I'm just trying to cope with that. My average numbers are just too high on the oral meds without rapid-active, and I've given the oral meds enough time for the half-life at this point.

These morning numbers while I sleep are out of control. I've even resorted to giving myself 3 units of rapid-active in the early morning the last two nights when the meter woke me up to tell me I was over 200, and that brings it down but only for a few hours before I wake up at near or over 200 again, and they don't go back down until around 2:00 to 2:30PM.

But at the same time my afternoon dips with the insulin are a problem too, and they weren't a problem when I'm doing the oral meds. Supposedly there have been studies done were taking 1/2 of a once daily in the morning and 1/2 at night work better for some people, but it sounds like that could be dangerous and I don't know if I want to make that call for myself.

My other antibody test was put online at 8PM last night and it's just as bad as the GAD-65 test was. My ZnT8 level was 500. Unlike the GAD-65 test, they made no mention of what is "normal", but they marked this as "high".

Supposedly my Endocrinologist is going to call me at the end of the day. I don't believe that, but maybe he will. In the mean time, I scheduled my appointment with the cardiologist. He's got a clinic, but fortunately for me he will be at the hospital where I got my blood work done. I'm going to get up there early before that appointment to get the rest of the blood work my Primary Care doctor wanted me to fast for on the same day.

Well, if your endocrinologist doesn't call or doesn't respond to your problem with a plan of action ... and hopefully, a SERIES of things to try (Try this, and if that doesn't work add that...) then I will do my best to research that problem.

But just OOC ... does your blood sugar dip and rise occur about 12 hours apart? And what form, exactly, of long-acting insulin are you on, by generic or band name? Is it Lantus?
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2019/021081s072lb
l.pdf

Bc I did lookup the pharmacokinetics of lantus and it does look pretty even over 24 hours. Your AVERAGE blood sugar levels might change with changing a manufacturer or changing an injection site or (obviously) level of activity or eating pattern, but it shouldn't be contributing to that afternoon dip and early AM rise. You clearly have a very strong daily rhythm driving your blood sugar, and it's not related to anything the lantus (if that's what you're using) is, or isn't, doing.

But, hey, you're in a lot better situation than you were a month ago! Just think how vastly you've improved over when your blood suagr was 500+! That should give you something to cheer about. WOO HOO!

:hugs:

I'm taking Toujeo right now, but that sample pen is almost out. After that it's Basaglar. I realize there are likely subtle differences between all of them, but my doctors are treating them as if they're interchangeable with the more expensive Lantus.

It's EXTREMELY strong and behaves more or less the same whether I'm on oral meds or straight insulin.

I haven't eaten at all yet today. I was over 210 before mowing the lawn and I just finished doing that and spending another 2 hours cleaning up the helicoptors and the sidewalks, walkway and driveway. That's the first time I've put in 4 hours work without feeling like death at the end of it.

I'm down to 90 now. Time to eat something.

Well, I'm FINALLY getting to the end of collecting estimates from contractors for a bathroom gut job. The contractors are now bidding on the same bathroom to roughly the same "universal checklist" and out of 5, we've eliminated one as being unacceptable, and one as being too expensive and, frankly, we like two of them better than the third even tho they're all about the same estimate. If we have a good experience with our chosen contractor we've got three more bathrooms to do!

Started collecting quotes for window replacement, and I've tightened up the scope of work so the updated estimates should be on the same work with the same model replacement windows (we were very specific what we wanted but one contractor quoted the next cheapest model).

Been trying to get to the end of this so I can move on to other things like yardwork, investments, and legal stuff. Hubby will oversee the actual construction work since he used to do construction for a living and he knows how to deal with these guys better than I do.

Well after doing the 4 1/2 hours of yard work, I made one more attempt to put the snake through the shower drain to no avail.

So I had to do the unthinkable...

Underneath, Uncle Bob put a 3-way rubber connector. One from the tub drain, one to the crap shoot, and the third to the stack going out the roof. First I loosened it up and let the water drain out into a 5 gallon pail. I removed the connector and immediately I knew how much trouble I was in. Literal crap was inside the pipes and the rubber connector.

I had to use a paint stir stick in both pipes about 8 times to scoop out as much of it as I could and put it straight into a garbage bag before I could even think of putting the snake in there. It fought me the whole way until I got it into the crap pipe, but since I was already dirty I was going to take my time and do this right.

So gross...

I tightened it all up and my drain has never worked better. I don't know why I couldn't get the snake down there this time, but I think it was for the best and I got it really cleared out now. Hopefully that will last me a few years before it gives me problems again.

Most productive day I've had since my diagnosis, in any event.

I think I need to regrade the pipe from the tub. I didn't put a level up to it, but it looks pretty level all the way to the large cast iron waste pipe. Not too tough a job, but plumbing is just about my least favorite thing to do on the house...

And for good reason!

Got my gutters taken care of today. I know those gutter guards my old man gave me are working and keeping the downspouts clean, but the amount of work needed to clean them is insane. About half of my helicopters from the tree were on top of them, and I had to use a shop vac to clean the top of the guards when I was done.

Got everything done except for the gutters on the back of the house that need the 12 foot ladder. I might do that tomorrow if I get the weeds done early enough. I also got my A/C unwrapped and ready to go for the hot weather coming next week.

Tons of free carbs today. I'm already over 100 carbs and dinner is almost ready. That's good because I'm already back down to 72mg/dL. I even had 2 bananas today without rising above 150 and it came right back down.

My pancreas is still working as long as I am.

Stick with the good one if you're happy with the price and the service for sure. It's hard finding good help at a reasonable price in any economy.

Also, keep in mind that on the reverse side of things the contractors never know what they're walking into either. Unlike a "regular" job where you know what you're walking into every day even if you have a crappy job, every job they have is a different experience. There's usually SOMETHING behind the walls that wasn't expected (Thanks Uncle Bob), but the biggest variable is the clients.

I'm certainly not saying to be a pushover when paying somebody to work on your home, but little things like offering them coffee or some water can go a long way with the morale on the job and you could end up with a situation where both parties are looking forward to working with each other again.

I was going to say maybe wait until winter to get more work done for a better price since that work can typically be slow during the cold months, but I forgot you live in California.

Hopefully all your windows are standard sizes. That will make the job cheaper.

Oh good. You shouldn't have to worry about being taken advantage of then.

Both of my grandma's way overpaid for work done on their plumbing back in the day and it REALLY got me angry when they told me what they were charged for simple things like changing out a kitchen faucet and changing a thermocouple on a water heater.

Good luck!

Last night my numbers were GREAT.

Went to bed at around 115 after eating 1/4 cup of rice, 12 oz of California Medley and 2 burger patties around 8PM. Then 2 chicken breasts around 11PM. Snacking on some sunflower seeds, and then eating another cup of peanuts after I'd fallen yet again to the mid 90s.

I woke up briefly today at 7AM and I was around 145 and finally woke up about 8:45AM and I'm 154.

So I still went up in the morning, but this is probably the least I've risen in the early hours while I'm sleeping yet. That's most likely because of two days in a row where I'd put in about 5 hours of physical work.

I think I'll pull the weeds in the sand pit today, and maybe mix up some weed spray to use around the property if I feel like I want to do that later. I really should pull my car out of the garage so I can get the 12 foot ladder out and clear out that back gutter too.

Once the car is out I can pull out my horses and start painting the trim I got on the cheap to crown out the back porch. I still haven't decided for sure that I'm going to use that stuff in the room, but might as well get that going because the only things left to do in the porch would be installing the ceiling vent fans and putting down whatever flooring I'm going to use. If I don't get to that today I won't beat myself up over it though.

When he had a desk job he used to exercise a LOT, and when he wasn't doing that he was woodworking and doing repairs around the house. But that long-lasting, excruciating, crippling sciatica and back surgery really took the starch out of him.

I don't remember if you've ever specifically said so or not Sigs... Does your husband have diabetes too, or some other disorder related to blood sugar?

The classes told me at least 150 minutes per week of exercise. The level can vary greatly of course, considering a lot of people who have it are older than I am and are overweight. The woman teaching the classes said more than the 150 minutes recommended though. She says everyone should aim for at least 30 minutes per day.

It certainly has an effect on me, particularly now that I'm not taking rapid active insulin. I can have about twice as many carbs when I've been active during the day than I can when I haven't. And the last two evenings were good numbers after being out in the yard 5 hours per day, but after two days of doing it (and a third today) I'm on my way toward having my best numbers yet. That 154 I had in the morning when I woke up has been my peak so far. I've dipped twice to as low as the mid 70's before eating and I'm back up at 115 right now. I'm cooking my dinner with rice earlier than I wanted to because my buddy wants to hang out tonight, but hopefully the 1/4 cup of rice doesn't bring me over 154 because I've been between 70 and 154 all day long with what is almost always the worst time of day far behind me.

Having him get active in his shop again is good enough. Exercise doesn't have to be something that you hate to do. But if he's just sitting and watching TV without working in between it's not only bad for his numbers but it's bad for his state of mind too.

Ask me how I know.

Yeah, he has diabetes Type 2. It was brought on by high-dose steroids when they were trying to treat his Meniere's disease. But there's more than that.

Hubby is a tall guy, and when he was young he was not only extremely fit and strong, he had tremendous balance, endurance, agility, eyesight, and hearing. Yanno, recruited by the HS football, swim, and wrestling teams (he chose the chess club and Home Ec.) He overcame a lot, from being homeless (having been essentially kicked out by a nutty abusive dad) to working construction to being a motorcycle mechanic to working for university research.

He's also the smartest person I've ever met. I'm brighter than average, but, SIX, I know my limitations! I can't keep up with the range and depth of his thought, and everything he knows he taught himself. He's not afraid to question everything, from physics to politics.

Anyway, over the years he lost his tremendous eyesight. Then he started losing his balance and hearing in his left ear (intractable Meniere's which is still active, finally controlled thru neurosurgery). Then dxd with prostate cancer at a young age (more surgery) Then hyperlipidemia, diabetes, then sciatica (and back surgery). He's really pushed to get himself through all of that and to stay functional but at his age, he is realistically looking at the end of his life. It's been a struggle.

On top of that, we both are still concerned for our daughter. Yanno, its a tragedy that she had such a catastrophic birth bc it is certainly in her genes to be bright. So he has a lot on his mind and not a lot to look forward to. But I'll do what I can to get him going bc you're right: it's not good to just sit and read.

He sounds like a cool dude.

If he's really toward the end of his life, maybe he'd have a better outlook if he was working on things he loved doing in his shop instead of reading. There's probably a few more roads left in my shoes, and I could stand to read a little bit more since I've let that habit fall out of my life, but except for keeping his mind sharp his time would probably be better spent creating things instead of reading stuff that other people created.

And maybe if he were to do that, he'd find another road or two left in his shoes as well.

Just my two cents.

My numbers were just about as perfect as they could be today. It really means a lot to get the day off on the right foot. I was mistaken when I said 154 was my peak. It actually peaked out at 158 shortly after waking up.

I was able to eat twice at my friend's house, and I'm currently at 121. I almost had 180 grams of carbs today too, without any rapid-active to balance it out.

This is my first day 100% in range where I didn't use any rapid insulin.

I plan on finishing the weeds tomorrow and getting those back gutters cleared out. Got a few projects on the house I'm mulling over before I decide which one to tackle first.

I plan on finishing the weeds tomorrow and getting those back gutters cleared out. Got a few projects on the house I'm mulling over before I decide which one to tackle first.

Hey, I don't know if your library carries DVDs of television series, and even if they do this on is a little obscure, but we found a really engaging one call Sea Patrol. It's an Australian production about the Ozzie equivalent of their coast guard. And they deal with the kinds of problems you might expect an Ozzie coast guard to deal with: illegal fishing, human trafficking, drug smuggling, even eco-warriors, onboard interactions. I looked up the terminology and nicknames that they use on the show (What or who is a "Buffer"? Turns out he's a ship's bo's'n) and it's all been legit so far, if a bit puzzling. Anyway, you might like it.
I hope you find a good one!

Cool. My library does get tv series on DVD from the UK and Australia. I will look that up.

I found a copy of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". Want to see if they still have a copy of the one with Sean Connery in it. I love that one.

Walk done and it is a lovely sunny day here. Sitting at 80F which is 25C.

No vacuuming done though I did pick up a bunch of paper off the bedroom floor that I had tossed there after I was done with them.

Yard work for 9 hours today. Got the back gutter cleared out too.

I've already eaten 6 times today. 160 carbs. No rapid-active insulin.

I'm sure I'll come back down enough to have my regular dinner with rice in an hour or two. Might have some chicken breasts later if I'm still awake.

Not sure what I'm going to do yet tomorrow but I have some ideas. We'll see how my body is feeling.

I managed some yardwork today, too. Yesterday was bonked by a whole series of things including dog being bitten by some and going into shock. She's still favoring her left ear. If not better tomorrow it's off to the vets!

I peaked over 170 around 6AM this morning, but that doesn't really surprise me. I fell asleep rather early last night and didn't cook the chicken breasts, but at around 3:30 I ate quite a few peanuts because I was still hungry, and I had already climbed to around 140 when I ate them.

I woke up for the day and I'm down to 133 already. I don't think I've ever been close to that low before 9AM. The best part is that I'm not hungry in the morning like I was yesterday morning before I got started working after the late snack.

If it weren't for a very brief period in the mid-morning yesterday that got me over 180 for a few minutes, and another few minutes in the afternoon where I'd allowed myself to dip below 70, I'd have had two 100% days in a row without rapid-active. I'll have to settle for 98% yesterday.

Since we're shooting for 75% or better in range, I'll take it.

And actually, if I can continue to replicate these results, my next A1C is going to be so low that it will look like I've only got prediabetes. My average for the last 2 weeks is 136mg/dL, and my average for the last 5 days is only 126mg/dL.

We've come a long way from regular readings of 400 to 550!

Er... unless your next A1C doesn't happen for two months, it's going to reflect previous bad readings. It's a 3-month average.

Anyway, it sounds like you'd been keeping your blood sugar under control in the summer by working your brains out. And it sounds like long-acting insulin and work/activity are your ticket to good blood sugar control. WOO HOO!!

Out to do laundry in a bit. Good thing I don't need a bus as traffic is being detoured for a parade through the city.

Taking some extra quarters with me as the last couple of times 2 different machines ate them and I had to come back upstairs for more.

Huh. I imagine having to go up and down 10 flights of stairs for a few extra quarters would be aggravating.

At the vet's. I took dog in over hubby's objections and it's a good thing that I did bc she has foxtail (grass) deep in her ear. The problem with foxtail is that they microscopic barblets that make the long, pointed seeds drill deeper and deeper. Some go into the face and wind up in the sinuses. Some go into the belly and wind up in in the intestine.

This is the season for foxtail. With the tremendous rain it's exploded, and now that it's ripening the seeds are stiff and getting everywhere.

They have to knock the dog out to remove it. Obviously I have to work harder to eradicate it.

It is even with using the elevator. But I got lucky today as the washing machine I was using behaved itself.

Sounds ok at your end.

At this end, dog is OK. Poor thing woke up partway thru, and I could hear her crying all the way to the waiting room. But after the foxtail was out she was a MUCH happier camper!
No more front yard for her!

Speaking of front yards...I managed to cut the swale/ dry stream about where I wanted to, and only ran into one root about the width of my baby finger. Dear daughter was digging up foxtail.
We had a productive conversation with our investment advisor, and I got unstuck the last two quotes that I was really interested in.

Yeah it is.

I'm glad the vet was able to help the poor pooch.

Sounds like the rest of your Saturday went good too.

The start to fire season in BC and Alberta has quieted down for now, so that is also some good news.

Yeah. My next A1C isn't going to happen for a while. I just got one I believe on the 11th, and it was 11.3% or something like 280mg/dL.

My next one is going to be WAY lower.

I spent most of the day once noon came around between 78 and 115, and even though I did peak at 180 about 3 hours before I woke up I didn't go over so that doesn't count as high... So one hour away from another 100% in range day.

I think you're right.

I worked almost 12 hours today. For the most part, nothing as strenuous as the constant toil of yard work the last 4 days, but there were some parts that were pretty labor intensive, requiring that I really stretch and reach over my head to do stuff.

I got 9 pieces of trim primed for the crown in my back porch. I didn't get around to putting any paint on them though.

I finally got around to re-routing the BS electric in my shed, putting it inside the studs and putting in two switches. One for the two new lights I installed in the attic above the porch and the shed and a second one that will control the overhead light I'm going to install (probably tomorrow) in the shed itself. I started before 11AM and didn't finish wrapping up until about 15 minutes ago.

I've got to paint the studs that were behind the electric, and I'm going to paint the conduit too. Might do that tomorrow while I'm painting the trim.

Dinner is on now. Still under 110 and sinking, so it the rice shouldn't be a problem even this late.
