Oh, Those Trump-Supporting Republicans

August 29, 2024

https://andrewtobias.com/oh-those-trump-supporting-republicans/

Thom Hartmann’s headline seemed way over the top . . . Some Republicans Imply Kamala Harris is 3/5th Human & Unfit for Presidency . . . until I read it . . . and the New York Times reporting to which it refers — Trump Elevates False, Fringe Attacks on Harris to Center of His Campaign.

Heather Cox Richardson:

The elephant in the room these days is that most Republicans, along with many pundits, are pretending that Trump is a normal presidential candidate. They are ignoring his mental lapses, calls for authoritarianism, grifting, lack of grasp on any sort of policy, and criminality, even as he has hollowed out the once grand Republican Party and threatens American democracy itself.

It’s hard to look away from the reality that the Republican senators could have stopped this catastrophe at many points in Trump’s term, at the very least by voting to convict Trump at his first impeachment trial. At the time, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) said, “Out of one hundred senators, you have zero who believe you that there was no quid pro quo. None. There’s not a single one.” Republican senators nonetheless stood behind Trump.

The superseding Trump indictment charts Jack Smith’s path forward

Smith has reworked the Jan. 6 case against Trump in light of the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity.

August 28, 2024

https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-superseding-trump-indictment-
charts-jack-smith-s-path-forward

On Tuesday, Special Counsel Jack Smith unveiled a superseding indictment of Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. for his effort to overturn the 2020 election. Trump, for his part, didn’t wait long to weigh in. Posting on Truth Social, he declared the indictment “ridiculous” and part of “the single greatest sabotage of our Democracy in History.” The former president seemed particularly insulted that the grand jury handed up a superseding indictment “immediately after our Supreme Court Victory on Immunity and more.” The action, he wrote, was “shocking.”

The decision to file a superseding indictment was, in fact, something less than shocking. The new indictment was clearly fashioned by Smith’s team precisely in response to that same Supreme Court ruling finding broad presidential immunity from criminal prosecution—and specifically to bring it into compliance with the high court’s ruling. Smith has stripped out portions of the original indictment that were newly and definitively forbidden under the Court’s decision, and he tweaked others, seeking to streamline the charges and make them viable to move forward under the ruling so that the case itself can proceed. The Supreme Court hasn’t prohibited prosecution altogether—and Smith is proceeding accordingly.

“Smith rewrote the exact same case in an effort to circumvent the Supreme Court Decision,” Trump complained. He’s not entirely wrong—although he would have done well to replace the word “circumvent” with “follow” or “comply with.” The Court’s instructions were opaque, leaving U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan with a difficult task in sorting through what was left of the prosecution on remand. With this superseding indictment, Smith is not just discarding the elements of the case that the Court has ruled out, but is also offering his own interpretation of Chief Justice John Roberts’s reasoning.

Trump is, however, correct that the superseding indictment is actually not that different from the original one. In fact, most of the language is the same. And there’s very little new here: Smith appears to have chosen to proceed with less of what he had, instead of trying to supplement it with many additional facts or arguments. In a notice filed with the court alongside the superseding indictment, the special counsel indicates that the indictment “was presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case” — confirming that Smith was able to secure the grand jurors’ votes for these charges against Trump even with a slimmer folder of evidence on hand.

Federal Judge Blocks Biden-Harris Administration's "Parole In Place" Program For Illegal Aliens

Authored by Eric Lundrum via American Greatness,

On Monday, a federal judge in Texas blocked the Biden-Harris Administration’s attempts to implement a “parole in place” program that would have awarded a pathway to citizenship to illegal aliens who are the spouses of American citizens.

A Trumptard judge is playing politics:

The so-called “parole in place” program was halted in a Monday night ruling by federal district court judge J Campbell Barker in the eastern district of Texas, a favorite venue of conservatives seeking to derail the president’s policy agenda. Barker was appointed to his position by the Donald Trump White House.

The crank realignment is bad for everyone
A stupid party + a bunch of biased institutions degrades epistemics across the board

By Matthew Yglesias | Aug 29, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/the-crank-realignment-is-bad-for

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s transition from semi-prominent Democrat to third party spoiler to Donald Trump endorser is emblematic of a broader, decade-long “crank realignment” in American politics.

Trump himself, of course, used to be a Democrat. He switched parties in a blaze of birther conspiracy theories, and only then came to embrace conservative views on topics like gun control and abortion. And RFK Jr. was into election fraud conspiracy theories long before January 6, but his version was about George W. Bush stealing the 2004 election in Ohio. That wasn’t a mainstream Democratic Party view (there’s a reason there was no Kerry-led insurrection), but it was mainstream enough to be published in Rolling Stone and for Kennedy to continue to be a player in progressive politics.

Twenty years later, that’s no longer the case. Democrats are much more buttoned-up, and the GOP is much more accepting of cranks and know-nothings like Kennedy.

The partisan shifts of both Trump and RFK Jr. are part of a long term cycle in which educated professionals have gravitated toward the Democratic Party coalition and a generic suspicion of institutions and the people who run them has come to be associated with conservative politics. Conservative cranks are not even close to new (the John Birch Society, for example), but they’ve become increasingly prominent, which continues to push educated professionals into Democratic ranks. This generates more partisan alignment on questions like immigration (which in the 1980 and 1990s had basically no relationship partisanship), where views are closely related to psychological attributes that correlate with intelligence and educational attainment.

To some extent, this crank realignment is nice.

When I was working at The American Prospect and we were trying to nudge the Democratic Party in a more progressive direction, it was a thorn in our side that there were so many people on the left who wanted to talk about how 9/11 was an inside job, GMOs were poisoning our children, and the FDA was ignoring damning evidence about vaccines and autism. We wanted marriage equality and a more generous welfare state, not a fuzzy agglomeration of anti-establishment viewpoints. And over time, we got what we wanted: Democrats have become more left-wing in their policy views and also less friendly to nut jobs. The problem is that this hasn’t actually changed the fact that lots of people are dumb cranks; it’s simply created a Dumb Crank Party. And on balance, I think that has eroded the epistemic quality of both coalitions.

The stupid party

The most obvious problem is that as Republicans increasingly become the party of retirees and folks who didn’t go to college, they still need smart, educated professionals to actually do stuff, and they’re fishing in an increasingly thin pool.

You can see this quantified most clearly with federal judges, who are supposed to be smart people who went to good law schools, but who are also, in practice, selected on partisan criteria. The vast majority of graduates of top law schools are Democrats, but roughly half the judges are appointed by Republicans, so conditional on getting a high LSAT score, your odds of becoming a federal judge are dramatically higher as a Republican. This also means that in some sense, the average “quality” of Republican judging is much lower. The good news for the Federalist Society is that appellate jurisprudence is basically fake, and having judges agree with you about stuff is dramatically more important than having “highly skilled” judges (whatever that means).

But the same human capital issue replicates across domains.

Republicans keep getting asked to stop playing various songs at Trump rallies because very few top musicians like the GOP. By contrast, during the Democrats’ convention roll call, each state had a signature song, with all songs cleared with the recording artist. Looking at campaign signs and images, it’s also clear that Democrats have access to much higher levels of average skill in areas like typography and graphic design. That sounds trivial, but the problem extends to essentially all skilled professions. Most doctors are Democrats. Among scientists who contribute to political campaigns, only 10 percent give to Republicans. A lot of academics think of economics as a relatively conservative discipline, which is it, but only in the sense that top colleges’ economics departments have a 5-to-1 ratio of Democrats to Republicans rather than 20 or 100 to one.

This was all broadly true during Obama’s presidency, but since Trump took office, Republicans have done better with formerly Democratic-aligned groups like genuinely poor white people and working class Hispanics and worse than ever with college graduates. This optimizes their coalition for the electoral college, but it makes it harder for conservatives to actually marshal knowledge and govern the country. It’s striking that the GOP has never put together a halfway serious plan to fight inflation or reduce crime. A lot of Romney-Clinton voters could, conceivably, have been tempted back into the GOP ranks with a serious effort to persuade them that Republicans have genuine solutions to Biden-era problems. But the Trump-era Republican Party lacks the capacity to put forth such an effort.

That’s not to say there are no capable people in the GOP. But they are few in number and increasingly marginalized in a conservative ecosystem that doesn’t care about experts or knowledge. For the last week, the entire right side of the political spectrum has been soaked with nonsensical conspiracy theories about the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ annual revision of employment statistics. William Beach, who ran this agency under Trump, tried to explain what actually happened, but there are no institutions on the right that amplify credible experts and marginalize conspiracists.

William Beach @BeachWW453
For those who think the big revision to the BLS jobs numbers "leaked" and was meant to come out after the election, remember that BLS always announces its draft revisions in August and announced this year's date, August 21, many months ago. It is important to check your facts.

To the extent that Kamala Harris is a quasi-incumbent and it’s in Republicans’ interests to lie about her, these epistemic weaknesses can serve as a kind of strength. But if the Republicans ever want to govern the country, it’s not helpful to repel everyone who is honest and rigorous.

Bias on the left

The flip side is that turning fields like journalism, social science, and public health into partisan monocultures makes it harder for them to perform their epistemic functions.

I don’t think this is widely known outside of the field, but at any general interest publication, the reporters who cover politics are the least left-wing group at the publication. People who care a lot about politics tend to develop at least somewhat nuanced views of at least some issues. And in the course of doing their jobs, those reporters sometimes find themselves talking to Republicans and understanding, to an extent, their points of view. But the copy editors and social media managers and television critics and food writers all tend to be both left-wing and a bit casual and unreflective about it. Which is fine as far as it goes. But I have heard from many policy writers that as their articles go through the editorial process, conservative or centrist points tend to receive heightened scrutiny and pushback relative to progressive ones. Not because any individual in the system is trying to create an imbalanced process — that’s just the natural result of a process in which everyone involved has left-wing priors.

Similarly, I think policy-relevant research done in economics departments is a lot more useful and credible than other forms of social science, not because economists are so great but because an economics paper is much more likely to clear the “has at least one conservative read this?” test.

For reasons that sociologists, anthropologists, and social psychologists are probably better-situation to explain, if you work in an environment where all your colleagues and peer reviewers and people you talk things over with in a seminar are left-wing, you are going to get biased results. Again, not necessarily because anyone is trying to bias the results, but because each individual person has their own biases and when almost all of those biases are mutually reenforcing, you get a bad outcome.

A related issue is that once an expert community obtains a sharp political skew, it’s easy to confuse the interests of the expert community with an ideological vision of the public interest. It’s important to make energy policy in a way that aligns with scientific facts about climate change and public health. But that’s not the same as saying that “the science” dictates specific policy measures. We saw this really clearly during Covid when “defer to public health academics” became constitutive of progressive politics, but public health academics also seemed to feel considerable pressure to align their recommendations with the progressive policy priorities of the moment. Ideally, we’d live in a world where empirical information “pulls sideways” in a way that’s orthogonal to values-based ideological conflict. But we’re not even close.

Facts and knowledge matter

This is all a real shame. I used to be much friendlier to the idea of strategic dishonesty as a means of achieving useful political outcomes, but as I’ve become middle aged I’ve also become more earnest about honesty. The problem is that values really do sharply underdetermine specific policy measures. There’s a sense in which “the government should take action to combat food deserts as a way to fight obesity” is a progressive view, and research casting doubt on food desert theory is bad news for the left. But there’s a deeper and, I think, more true sense in which progressives want to use the state in ways that address public health problems, and that means taking action to combat food deserts is a good idea if and only if it’s actually true that this works. If it doesn’t work, it’s a huge waste of time! If what people really need is broader access to GLP-1 medications, then we need to (a) know that and (b) formulate policy ideas that achieve that goal.

The basic problem is that just saying government programs should help address problems that aren’t addressed by the market alone, while true, offers basically no guidance about what to actually do. It is very, very important to come up with correct empirical analysis or else you’re not going to accomplish anything.

Conversely, conservatives put more faith in culture than in policy to address what they see as the problems of society. That in some ways lightens the load in terms of how much high-quality policy analysis you need. But in other ways it raises the stakes for doing the work in society at large. Are conservatives succeeding in building compelling institutions that can address their concerns about trends in American life? I think they pretty clearly are not, even according to conservatives. And on a policy level, they are completely up the creek without a paddle.

The pandemic revealed that many longstanding conservative criticisms of the drug approval process have some merit.

But there is no post-pandemic FDA reform push from the GOP, and certainly no agenda to take lessons learned from Operation Warp Speed and apply them to other issues. Republicans have become the party of conspiracy theorists who believe Bill Gates is using vaccines as a covert mind control program, so even when they hit on something that works, they don’t dare talk about it or build compelling narratives around it.

I would, at the end of this piece, ideally present solutions to these problems. Maybe all the cranks and idiots will vanish from the earth and all future political discussions will take place among smart, well-informed people in a way that allows for ideologically balanced policy debates. That would be nice! But it seems unlikely. In the real world, where the cranks will always be with us, I think it would be better to have them more evenly distributed across the parties rather than having one crazy party and one party of credulous conformists. Maybe if Trump loses, whatever comes after him on the right will have some kind of re-realigning effect. For now, though, the trend only seems to be accelerating.

All the Trumptards I know are either struggling or have given up like 6ix has. They place faith in Donald "Only-I-Can-Fix-It" Trump to save them. Meanwhile, Democrats such as myself don't need a savior or even a government. We would delight in, and have proven many times to be capable of, blasting Trumptards to hell that get in our way. They die screaming.

Aug 29 (Reuters) - The members of Swedish pop group ABBA have asked U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to stop using their music and videos at his campaign rallies, the band's record label said on Thursday.

ABBA hits including "The Winner Takes It All", "Money, Money, Money" and "Dancing Queen" were played at a rally held by Trump and his running mate JD Vance on July 27 in Minnesota, accompanied by videos, said Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, which had a reporter at the event.

"Together with the members of ABBA, we have discovered that videos have been released where ABBA's music has been used at Trump events, and we have therefore requested that such use be immediately removed and taken down," the band's record label Universal Music said in a statement.

It said no permission or license had been granted to the Trump campaign.

Several artists, or their representatives, have objected to their music being played at Trump events over the years, including late American singer-guitarist Tom Petty, British singer-songwriter Adele, and rock band R.E.M.

In April, late Irish singer and activist Sinéad O'Connor's label also demanded the Trump campaign stop using her music.

Canadian singer Celine Dion and her label earlier this month made a similar complaint, calling the use of her performance "unauthorized".

The U.S. Army rebuked the Trump campaign on Thursday, issuing a statement over an encounter at Arlington National Cemetary earlier this week and confirming that a cemetery employee was "abruptly pushed aside" while the former president was visiting the grounds.

Why it matters: The apparent altercation between former President Trump's aides and an Arlington official ignited intense scrutiny over the Trump campaign's seemingly political use of the sacred site.

The U.S. Army oversees the management of Arlington National Cemetery, as well as enforcing rules pertaining to filming or photography on the property.

The latest: An Army spokesperson said in a statement that participants in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a visit to Section 60 "were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds."

The exchange between the ANC employee and Trump's staff occurred when the employee tried to "ensure adherence" to the site's rules prohibiting the use of the grounds for political purposes, the statement said.

The spokesperson added, "the incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked."

The statement said that while the incident was reported to police at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, the employee decided not to press charges.

The New York Times reported that the ANC employee declined to press charges for fear of retaliation from Trump supporters.

A President Could Now Lawfully Assassinate a Rival Or Accept Bribes

Aug 29, 2024 at 12:06 PM EDT

https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-new-indictment-released-jack-smi
th-supreme-court-immunity-ruling-1946074

Greg Germain, a law professor at Syracuse University in New York, said that a president could now lawfully assassinate a rival or accept bribes under the Supreme Court's July 1 ruling, which gave presidents broad immunity from prosecution.

"While the lower courts may try to interpret their way around the [Supreme] Court's decision, ultimately I think the election interference case is dead before the Supreme Court. And if Trump wins the election, the Court's opinion leaves little doubt that he could pardon himself or appoint people to the justice department who will dismiss the case," he said.

Germain said he was surprised by how much immunity the Supreme Court was willing to grant presidents. The decision overturned a Washington D.C. Circuit Court ruling, which set a very narrow course for presidential immunity.

"I have tried in my public comments about the Trump cases to put my personal opinions aside and focus on how I think the courts will rule on the cases," Germain said.

"I expected the Supreme Court to overturn the DC Circuits' immunity decision by recognizing broad presidential immunity for core presidential activities as a necessary incident of presidential power."

"But I also expected the Court to exempt from that broad immunity the most corrupt and anti-democratic actions done for personal benefit rather than the perceived good of the country. The key distinction, I thought, was the motive of the president. I was wrong," he said.

Echoing the dissenting opinion of Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor, Germain said the Supreme Court has given presidents' immunity from almost any criminal conduct while in office.

"The Court held that presidential immunity applies regardless of a president's corrupt and personal motives. A president would be immune from prosecution for selling pardons to the highest bidder or assassinating a political rival, and there is a broad presumption that activities having any connection to the presidency are not private activities," he said.

"As I read the opinion, only purely private activities, having no relation to the role of the president, would be subject to prosecution. The sole remedy for public impropriety is impeachment," he said.

"While I doubt that any member of the constitutional convention, even the most monarchical, would have agreed with that opinion given their broad concern about corruption, that is my reading of the Court's ruling."

Full text of TRUMP v. UNITED STATES (Republican Presidents are immune from prosecution)
https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-939_e2pg.pdf

Held: Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of Presidential power entitles a former President to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority. And he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts.

Kamala Harris has tightened the race in every swing state

Here are the latest swing state results from Emerson College Polling:

August 29, 2024 – 11:35 am - It's close to a dead heat in the battleground states. Aside from Arizona, Kamala Harris is either ahead or within 1% in every state.

Maybe Kamala Harris is actually ahead in swing states

Here's another poll of swing states, this time from Bloomberg/Morning Consult:

August 29, 2024 – 5:05 pm - This is even more optimistic than this morning's Emerson College poll, though note that the margin of error is about 4% in each state.

NOTE: We're close enough to the election that from now on I'll be reporting the results of likely voters whenever possible.

Donald Trump is a woman’s best friend

Donald Trump must be desperately afraid that abortion is going to lose the election for him. A few years ago he was so anti-abortion he said that women should be jailed for getting an abortion. But now?

First he announces that he's in favor of banning abortion only after 15 weeks. Then he writes on Truth Social that he'll be the best president ever for "women and their reproductive rights." Next his running mate promises that Trump will veto any attempt to ban abortion nationwide. Finally, today, he takes a page out of the Swedish socialist playbook:

Trump now saying he wants the government to pay for IVF treatments.

Free IVF for all! How long will it be before he announces a billion-dollar funding program for Planned Parenthood?

‘It is not the job of the pro-life movement to vote for President Trump,’ says leading anti-abortion activist

Trump once said he had “great admiration” for Lila Rose’s work. Now he’s lost her support.

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/08/29/lila-rose-abortion-t
rump-interview-00176619

For years, the anti-abortion activist Lila Rose has pushed the GOP to curtail access to abortion. But now, as Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance conspicuously soften their abortion message ahead of the November election, Rose — who leads the prominent anti-abortion group Live Action — is embracing a more radical strategy: Urging her followers not to vote for Trump unless he changes course.

That position — which she teased in a series of social media posts earlier this week — defies both Democratic and Republican common sense about Trump’s strategy on abortion. In the eyes of many Democrats and anti-abortion conservatives who support Trump, a second-term Trump would still be sympathetic to the anti-abortion cause — even if he needs to moderate his message to win in November.

But since Trump and Vance have come out against a number of the anti-abortion movement’s key policy priorities — including a national abortion ban, a crackdown on the abortion pill and restrictions on IVF — Rose, who leveraged her large internet following into influence in the first Trump White House, is no longer confident that Trump is an ally, she told POLITICO Magazine. “It’s disappointing to say — but perhaps he personally lacks principle on this issue,” said Rose.

Donald Trump's campaign event at Arlington Cemetery was even worse than you think:

The idea was to lay a wreath honoring the 13 members of the U.S. military who were killed during the evacuation of Kabul in 2021 and film a political ad. They would distribute the video and attack Vice President Harris and President Biden for not “showing up” for their campaign event, which they sought to portray as an established memorial.

It sure sounds like something Trump would do, doesn't it?

The Trump team's response to being caught has been pure Trump: Attack, attack, and attack harder. A Trump spokesperson berated the Arlington official who asked them to stop as having a "mental health episode." After the Army defended her, a Trump campaign advisor blasted them as a bunch of "hacks." Trump himself posted a campaign video of the event and then insisted that it wasn't a campaign event and that it was he who had been mistreated. And J.D. Vance furiously told Kamala Harris to "go to hell" even though she hadn't said anything.

Welcome to another day in the Trump campaign.

Those geniuses leaving the Democratic Party don't know Project 2025.
Project 2025 started a half-century ago. A Trump win could solidify it forever

oject-2025-history

Project 2025 effectively marks "the final stage of conservatives' grand half-century scheme to destroy the legacy of the New Deal and the Great Society."

How a second Trump term is the 'final stage' of the far-right’s 'master plan'

By Carl Gibson | August 29, 2024

https://www.alternet.org/trump-final-stage/

Now, in Trump's second run for a second term in the White House, he's attempted to distance himself from Heritage and Project 2025, insisting "I don't know what the hell it is" on the campaign stump. This is hard to take at face-value, given that roughly 140 of his former staffers and advisors had a hand in writing Project 2025 and that his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) wrote the foreword to a forthcoming book by Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts.

If Trump loses, expect a Republican civil war

https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/4853672-trump-biden-2024-republic
an-party
/

After Trump’s loss in 2020, it became an act of disloyalty for Republicans to deny that Trump actually won reelection. So did the failure to defend or excuse his actions on Jan. 6 or his legal problems. So did the act of backing an alternative 2024 candidate.

To have one family in complete control of a major national political party is an aberration in our country. Daughter-in-law Lara Trump, installed as co-chair of the Republican National Committee in March, naively spoke the truth in February when she said of its fundraising, “Every single penny will go to the number one and the only job of the RNC — that is electing Donald J. Trump as president of the United States…”

Naturally, down-ballot candidates, officeholders and lowly party officials did not appreciate her honesty about the family mission.

If Harris defeats Trump, will he step down as party leader? Probably not. Unlike Biden, Trump will not be pushed aside. Biden never was and did not represent himself as the Democratic Party. Trump and family, in contrast, are the Republican Party. Hence, moving beyond the Trump era without someone named Trump would take a tectonic shift.

Mary Trump Releases New 'Letter' to Donald Trump

By Mandy Taheri | Aug 30, 2024 at 8:51 AM EDT

https://www.newsweek.com/mary-trump-releases-new-letter-donald-trump-1
946374

Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Donald Trump, released on Thursday an edited video montage with clips of her at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), calling it a "letter" to her uncle.

"Dear Donald," the montage, titled "DNC Epilogue," begins, as Mary Trump is seen putting on sunglasses and popping up her jacket collar. She tells him that "we accept that we spent a week at the DNC securing Kamala Harris as our nominee," adding, "It's delusional to think you're returning to the White House."

In 2020, Mary Trump, who has been an outspoken critic of the former president, published Too Much and Never Enough, a tell-all book about Donald Trump and his family. In it, she says he is "utterly incapable of leading this country and it's dangerous to allow him to do so."

After its release, Donald Trump called the book "disgraceful." He told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that "she was not exactly a family favorite," adding, "We didn't have a lot of respect or like for her."

The video, which Mary Trump said emulates "Breakfast Club vibes"—a reference to the 1985 film—plays to the Simple Minds song "Don't You (Forget About Me)," featured in the movie's final scene.

"You see us through simplistic labels and stereotypes," Mary Trump says, referring to how she believes her uncle views her media team members, Jen Taub and Danielle Moodie, as a montage of newscasts and campaign clips played.

The video then shows Mary Trump standing with a Donald Trump impersonator outside the convention's site, Chicago's United Center, and saying, "Or a troubled niece," a reference to herself.

"But we're more than that. We're thinkers, fighters, dreamers and doers on the right side of history shaping a better future," Mary Trump says. She adds that her media team is "committed to getting Kamala Harris elected and ensuring you never hold power again."

"See you at the polls, the Mary Trump Media team," she says at the video's end, mimicking Judd Nelson's iconic fist raise in the ending scene of The Breakfast Club as she walks toward the camera.

In response to the video, Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign communications director, told Newsweek in an email that "Trump Derangement Syndrome is a serious issue and some people like her need to get checked out."

Mary Trump posted the video on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday morning with a caption that says: "It's a letter to Donald—spoiler: he's not the hero here. If you're done with his nonsense, give it a watch. Let's keep exposing his lies."

Opinion | Naked Emperors and Crypto Campaign Cash

By Paul Krugman | Aug 29, 2024

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/29/opinion/cryptocurrency-election.htm
l

Once upon a time there was an emperor who loved being fashion-forward. So he was receptive to some fast-talking tailors who promised to make him a suit out of new, high-technology fabric — a suit so comfortable that it would feel as if he were wearing nothing at all. “Fortune favors the brave,” they told him.

Of course, the reason the suit was so comfortable was that it didn’t exist; the emperor was walking around naked. But the members of Congress who made up his retinue didn’t dare tell him. For they knew that the tailors deceiving the emperor controlled lavishly funded super PACs that would spend large sums to destroy the career of anyone revealing their scam.

OK, I changed the story a bit. But it’s one way to understand the remarkably large role the crypto industry is playing in campaign finance this year.

Bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency, was introduced 15 years ago and was promoted as a replacement for old-fashioned money. But it has yet to find significant uses that don’t involve some sort of criminal activity. The crypto industry itself has been racked by theft and scams.

But while crypto has thus far been largely unable to find legitimate applications for its products, it has been spectacularly successful at marketing its offerings. Cryptocurrencies, which are traded for other crypto assets but otherwise mainly seem suited for things like money laundering and extortion, are currently worth around $2 trillion.

And in this election cycle the crypto industry has become a huge player in campaign finance. I mean huge: Crypto, which isn’t a big industry in terms of employment or output (even if you posit, for the sake of argument, that what it produces is actually worth something), accounts for almost half of corporate spending on political action committees this cycle.

Crypto political spending isn’t just huge; it takes an unusual form. While cryptocurrency is associated with libertarian ideology and the industry’s spending has had a partisan tilt toward Republicans, crypto super PACs don’t seem to go after Democrats per se; they single out politicians who have called for greater scrutiny of the industry, including the financial risks it poses and its marketing tactics. Notably, crypto-financed attack ads helped to defeat Representative Katie Porter, who has been critical of the industry, in the Democratic primary for California senator.

Politicians have taken notice. In 2021 Donald Trump called Bitcoin a scam. But last month he promised to turn America into a “Bitcoin superpower” and described crypto skeptics as “left-wing fascists.” The Biden administration has taken modest steps toward oversight and regulation of cryptocurrencies, but Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, has declared that “we all believe in the future of crypto” and reportedly has been trying to get crypto industry players to back the Kamala Harris campaign.

The gigantic political spending and influence of an industry that, if anything, destroys value rather than creates it (especially if you consider its environmental effects) is startling. But in a way it makes sense.

Consider those tailors who scammed the emperor. If they had merely clothed him in an ugly suit, they would have lashed out at anyone who dared point out its ugliness. But it’s much harder to silence people when they’re not criticizing the emperor’s fashion sense, but are instead laying bare the fact that he has been completely deceived. In that instance, a campaign against skeptics would have to be far more intense, even desperate.

True, almost every major industry spends some money trying to influence policy on its behalf, and some spend considerable sums trying to suppress criticism. The fossil fuel industry gives a lot of money to politicians who oppose environmental regulation — which at this point means that they overwhelmingly support Republicans — and has over the years provided large-scale funding to efforts questioning the reality of climate change.

But critics of, say, the oil industry aren’t likely to precipitate a sudden implosion; oil is, after all, an industry producing stuff with real uses, and many oil companies will probably find profitable niches even if and when we transition to a green economy. Crypto, on the other hand, shouldn’t be thought of as a real industry; it rests on nothing but the perception that someday, somehow, we’ll find a genuine use for its products.

Obligatory disclaimer: Some people I talk to claim that blockchain, the concept that underlies cryptocurrency, can have some real business uses. But this really has nothing to do with the big claims about Bitcoin and its rivals.

Back to the politics: We don’t know what will happen if the government gets serious about regulating cryptocurrencies, policing both their criminal uses and their marketing practices. But much if not all of that $2 trillion valuation could simply evaporate.

Hence the explosion of political spending. It’s a demonstration of power, but one that betrays desperation. It’s an inadvertent confession that the emperor has no clothes.

6ixStringJack, literally you are a stupid asshole who thinks he is smart. But that is uniform behavior for Trumptards. Trump demonstrated it, today:

Donald Trump has said he will vote against a ballot measure in his home state of Florida that would protect abortion rights after facing backlash from conservative supporters.

The former president's announcement came one day after an NBC News interview in which he appeared to support the measure - a statement that caused anti-abortion activists to openly criticise him.

On Friday, Trump told Fox News that he still thinks Florida's ban on abortions after six weeks is too strict.

However he said would still vote "no" on a measure that would amend the state's constitution to protect abortion rights.

"So I think six weeks you need more time, then six weeks I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it I disagreed with it," Trump said.

He then falsely alleged that Democrats in the US supported allowing abortions at any point during a pregnancy, which he used as his explanation for deciding to vote against the ballot measure in Florida.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy547v72nd4o

6ix, Trump is fucking stupid about abortion and everything else. But stupidity is the glue binding Trumptards to Trump.

Proving that not all Trumptards are equally stupid, here is something Trump's smarter Congressional allies won't do for him immediately before an election because it makes him look irresponsible and foolish but that doesn't mean they won't after the election, once he has won:

Donald Trump Calls For Government Shutdown Over Fake Voter Fraud Fears

Trump says he would "shut down the government in a heartbeat" if Republicans don't pass a bill blocking noncitizens from voting, which is already illegal.

By Arthur Delaney | Aug 30, 2024, 05:22 PM EDT

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-government-shutdown_n_66d2
1e56e4b013957161cd53

Former President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Republicans in Congress should shut down the government next month.

Trump said that if Democrats won’t agree to legislation barring noncitizens from voting - something that rarely happens because it’s already illegal - then Republicans should block legislation funding basic operations of the federal government.

“I would shut down the government in a heartbeat if they don’t get it and if they don’t get it in the bill,” Trump told podcast host Monica Crowley, a Republican operative who served in his administration.

Earlier this month, the far-right House Freedom Caucus took the official position that any government funding bill must include the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Among other things, the bill would make states require proof of citizenship for voter registration. (Voter registration forms already require people to attest to their citizenship, under penalty of perjury, per federal law.)

Trump suggested Republicans should actually increase their unrealistic demands by adding a bill restricting legal immigration.

“If they don’t get these bills, they should close it down, and Republicans should not approve it,” Trump said.

At a press conference over the summer, House Speaker Mike Johnson essentially admitted there was no evidence that undocumented immigrants vote in significant numbers in federal elections. Instead, he claimed to know it was happening “intuitively.”

“We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections, but it’s not been something that is easily provable,” Johnson said. “We don’t have that number.”

Trump and Johnson’s false statements about illegal voting have stoked fears among Democrats and even some Republicans that they will undermine confidence in November’s election and prompt another outburst of violence like the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Trump’s Angry New Rant Over Arlington Scandal Should Wake Up Dems

As the Arlington Cemetery plot thickens, it’s time for the Democrats to get tough and get to the bottom of this.

At a rally in Michigan on Thursday, Donald Trump unleashed an extended rant about the confrontation this week between his campaign staff and Arlington National Cemetery officials. Shockingly, he offered a highly distorted account of the scandal and painted himself as one of its victims. Trump even linked this to a bigger lie about the Deep State being out to get him, backhandedly illustrating a big reason why all this matters in the first place: It reveals a level of contempt for the law and public service that’s incompatible with democracy.

Now that Trump has offered this rant—his most extensive public explanation for this scandal yet—it should prompt Senate Democrats to exercise oversight responsibility and get to the bottom of this saga once and for all.

A family whose loved one is buried at an adjacent grave is unhappy about what Trump did. And regardless, nothing gives the Trump campaign license to use Arlington as a staging ground for political activities, or to physically abuse a member of staff for doing her job. Establishing what happened at a minimum is perfectly reasonable: If the Trump campaign broke the law and violence was exercised against this official simply because she sought to ensure that rules were followed, we should know about it.

Seriously, Dems, your job is to explode in righteous anger on behalf of all the dead soldiers Trump used as props, and even more fury, once you substantiate Arlington’s account, on behalf of the cemetery employee his entourage assaulted. Demand the footage. Get moving!
— Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) August 28, 2024

Trump campaign officials treated this woman horrifically, deriding her as unpatriotic and mentally unstable. And so, a big question is at issue here: Whether Team Trump will get away with employing thuggery and intimidation to bully an official in furtherance of this scheme—and to avoid facing consequences for it. Now that Trump has obliquely attacked her during a rally, that could draw an even more vivid target on her back.

The underrecognized challenge of turning the page on Trumpism

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-underrecognized-challenge-
of-turning-the-page-on-trumpism/ar-AA1pIRfm

The Trump era is about Trump in the way that the War of 1812 was about 1812: a critically important component and a useful touchstone but not all-encompassing. Turning the page on the era requires more than Trump failing to get an electoral vote majority.

Perhaps a more accurate time span to consider is something like 15 years. The election of Barack Obama as president in 2008 was hailed as a signal moment in the evolution of American politics and demography, but it also triggered a remarkable backlash. Ostensibly rooted in concerns about government spending, it was largely centered on the disruption of the economic crisis (which triggered an increase in spending) and that overlapping awareness of how America was changing.

The response focused on a nebulously defined group of elites that was subverting America and harming Americans: to extract money or to secure votes or to otherwise protect their power. The 2010 midterm election was defined by the sharp increase in hostility to Obama and by the Republican base’s belief that leaders in their party were insufficiently attuned — or overtly hostile — to the way these elites were destroying the country by spending money (often meaning on social programs) and allowing people to immigrate to the United States. This hostility was inextricable from the rise of a fervently right-wing media universe in which amplifying those concerns held enormous rewards.

Trump consumed that media and, upon entering the 2016 presidential race, repeated its rhetoric to his benefit. He was a Manhattan billionaire who would target the elites, a former Democrat who would upend the Democrats. In part because he was a consumer of the fringe right’s rhetoric, he understood that the engine of the backlash was far less about spending than culture. Republicans, including many who had simply checked out of the political process, wanted someone who would throw punches. So he threw punches: up, down, left, right.

As the 2012 election neared, Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden, predicted that the “fever” that had seized the GOP would break after his boss’s reelection. It was a prediction that was, in part, about framing Obama as the candidate who could repair the nation’s widening rift. It was also, it seems in retrospect, an assumption that the backlash was centrally about Obama, rather than what Obama represented. But nativist, racist backlashes against changing demography and circumstances are a regular feature of American history, and this one was no more solely about Obama than it was solely leveraged later by Trump.

What Trump added to the mix was decades of serving as the autocratic leader of a private business. He brought a disinterest in tradition and history and a pugilistic style honed on the pages of the New York Post. He brought a sense of entitlement that mirrored the entitlement felt by many of his supporters: that the advantages they enjoyed, if only tacitly, were advantages they earned or weren’t advantages at all. That a country adjusting to the rise of a more-urban, younger and less heavily White population was, instead, a country actively repressing everyone else. And Trump was willing to fight about it.

When Harris talks about turning the page on this, she means Trump, certainly. She means shifting American politics so that it is no longer unsurprising that a presidential candidate’s campaign might use Arlington National Cemetery for a campaign promotion, much less that it do so after accosting a cemetery employee who had reminded the campaign about laws against such activity, much less that no charges would result out of concern over hostile backlash from the candidate’s supporters. She means turning the page on a politician who would feel a sense of entitlement so sweeping that he might treat the military cemetery as something for his use and whose supporters would offer no objection to his doing so.

Turning the page on the energy Trump leveraged is trickier.

The country clearly exists in a moment of flux, in which, as Obama observed at the Democratic convention last week, we are fully testing the idea that a democracy built on pluralism can succeed. But part of the surge in enthusiasm for Harris’s candidacy is clearly rooted in her overtly representing the diversity of America. Conservative White Americans often see America’s non-White population as a unified entity colluding to strip the power of Whites. The shift from Biden to Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket allowed for a shift in strategy, too, from treating Trump as an opposing force to treating him as a historic outlier. Waving off Trump as “weird” has a knock-on effect, uniting those opposed to Trump’s candidacy and politics as the true inheritors of the American tradition.

Post-2020 predictions of Trump’s defeat proved premature. If Harris wins, there would still be frustration at the elites and at changing demographics; many on the right would remain feverish. But the fever might dissipate. It may be that Trump helped bring to fruition the political shift predicted with Obama’s 2008 victory. His win proved to be a potent organizing force for White conservatives.

The election of another Black president in the face of that force, an election powered by a coalition strengthened by opposition to Trump, might in fact turn the page that began being written 15 years ago. It is a page, though, that has appeared in American history books multiple times before.

Trump in damage-control mode over abortion backlash from the right

August 30, 2024

Former President Donald Trump is in damage control mode on abortion after telling NBC News that Florida’s six-week ban is “too short” and declining to take a clear stance on a state ballot measure that would expand access to the procedure.

The backlash from anti-abortion advocates was fierce, with some warning that the Republican presidential nominee was risking losing support from a key bloc of the party’s base.

Alarmed by what she saw, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the influential anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, called Trump on Thursday to ask for clarity on his comments, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation. Trump told her that he didn’t state a position on an amendment on his home state’s ballot this fall, which would bar restrictions on abortion before fetal viability, around the 24th week of pregnancy.

Dannenfelser told him that “it’s imperative that you’re clear because there’s confusion now that you may be in support of this,” the source added. She also told him the amendment is “incongruent” with his opposition to late-term abortion.

Trump Claims Ukraine War Has Killed 'A Million' — Here Are the Facts

Former President Donald Trump said in an interview this week that he would have prevented the war in Ukraine, adding that had he been elected in 2020, "a million people" would be alive right now.

In an interview with Dr. Phil, Trump returned to an oft-used line that the war between Ukraine and Russia would never have happened if he had been elected. However, Trump colored this belief by claiming that had he been elected, "you'd have a million people living right now."

Trump had just suggested that a win this November could be a sign from an "incredible power up there that wanted me to be involved in...maybe it's saving the world."

It just so happens that Trump got his numbers wrong:

Nobody cares about the number of dead Russians and Ukrainians, which by the article's own admission was probably close to correct if you'd bother reading that far...

Democrats have spent the last 4 years saying that the economy was great when people know it isn't. One numbers lie matters a whole lot more to voters than the other one does.

Trump said nobody would die if he had been President. That's nonsense, but Trumptards believe him because they know nothing true about Eastern Europe or Russia. Trump said the economy is ruined. That's nonsense, but Trumptards believe him for their mental well-being.

Consider what the country looks like if you view it through Trump's speeches:

• "70% of our people are living in poverty."
According to the Census Bureau, the official poverty rate in 2022 was 11.5%.

• "They’ve allowed, I believe, 15 million people into the country from all of these different places like jails, mental institutions."
There are no figures for this because the real number is probably around zero.

• "More drugs are coming into our country right now than at any time in our history."
By weight, drug seizures were 33% lower in July than in Trump's last month in office.

• Real wages are down 6% for Black families.
Real income for Black families has increased 2.9% under Biden. (This is through 2022. It's probably more by now.)

• "Border crossings were up 1,000% compared to the same month last year, 1,000% compared to last year. And by the way, last year, it was 1,000% compared to the year before."
Border crossings did increase under Biden, but obviously nowhere near 1,000%. As of July, border crossings are up 27% compared to Trump's last month in office.

• "Virtually 100% of the new jobs under Biden have also gone to illegal aliens. Did you know that?"
Since Biden entered office, employment has risen 8 million among native-born Americans vs. 3.5 million for non-natives. Of that, possibly half of the non native jobs have gone to illegal immigrants, or about 15% of the total.

• "If Kamala gets in, we will have 50-60 million illegals from all over the world ferried right into our country."
This is nonsensical.

• "Real" unemployment is much higher than reported under Biden. No it's not.

• "Inflation is destroying our families."
The CPI inflation rate in July was 1.9%. Year-over-year it was 2.9%.

• "Gasoline prices are now $5, $6, $7 and even $8 a gallon."
The average price of gasoline is currently $3.38.

If you take Trump seriously, America is besieged by poverty, native-born workers are unable to get jobs, drug use is skyrocketing, World War III is imminent if Democrats win, gasoline prices are through the roof, wages are dropping, inflation is eating up our paychecks, the auto industry is about to implode, Democrats are working furiously to steal the election, Christianity is under siege, and before long a quarter of the country will be illegal immigrants.

If I believed all that, I might vote for Trump too. But none of it is true.

You are still pitching Trump's campaign strategy that V.P. Harris overthrew Biden in a coup. And it is no wonder because:

In 2020, the press was caught flat-footed once again, this time after the election, when Trump refused to accept defeat and tried to mount a coup to stay in power. During the campaign, the press had largely ignored the mounting evidence that Trump was planning to reject the results of the election and later failed to adequately track the warning signs of an insurrection, even as it was openly discussed among right-wing extremists.

The insurrection, the indictments, the criminal conviction, the impeachments tend to receive little more than brief mentions in the Trump campaign coverage today. Poll-driven horse race stories now dominate, overwhelming the scattered attempts by the press to hold Trump accountable.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Why to NOT vote for Kamala:

Kamala, like Joe for the past 4 years, is the Democrat Party's creature. Some faction in is telling her what to wear, who to talk to, what to say and how to say it, ultimately what to do.

So, what has the Democrat Party been doing for 8+ years?

Warmongering nonstop and playing chicken with nukes

Colluding with the 3 letter agencies and MSM to flood America with disinformation (eg. Biden* is fine, Hunter Biden laptop is "Russian disinformation", Trump is colluding with Russia, other LIES too numerous to list)

CENSORING social media, unambiguously violating our First Amendment rights

Colluding with the DOJ to persecute political opponents

Opening the southern border to millions of illegal aliens

Dividing the nation on race, sex, orientation, gender and religion

Promoting the "victim Olympics" and racism, sexism, etc over equal opportunity and meritocracy

Pandering to "Defund the police" BLM, ANTIFA (Nancy Pelosi taking a knee in kinte cloth)

Flooding the world with deficit dollars and fueling inflation

*****

I don't appreciate our nation being taken apart, bit by bit, by corrupt officials who CLEARLY don't want America to continue as a sovereign state.

I DON'T APPRECIATE BEING LIED TO AND GASLIT 24/7/365

Given ALL of the effort Dems, "the Interagency", media, and tech giants are putting into defaming, prosecuting, and persecuting (if not assassinating) Trump, well ..

I guess I know how to express my opposition.
