The new Gallup Poll shows Congress at 18% approval, with a 76% dis-approval rating.

After 9/11/01 Congress' approval rating was 85%.

Nancy....you've come a long way baby! Great job!

Keep up your demented agenda and defeatist rhetoric; soon Republicans won't even have to campaign against your agents of doom and gloom.

The more that clear-thinking, rational Americans see of the Dem's performance, the worse their numbers get. The smoke & mirrors of the Dem-Media lying lovefest is not working anymore, and they are headed for huge defeats next year...NOT that the Repubs can be trusted as leaders either by the way...they squandered their Congressional power long before Nancy & Harry were swept into office by the un-precedented media-created tidal wave of Bush bashing bitterness.

18%? The worst since Gallop started trackng Congresional approval in 1974? Why, that's worse than Bush! Lower than any presidential approval rating in history!

I'd better check this in the Washington Post. Hmmm, no mention, just a story about Bushes disapproval rating being almost as bad a Harry Truman's.

But other specialist sites confirm the Gallup poll run Aug. 13 - 16 showing the 18% approval/76%disapproval. http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm
Why no media attention - no headlines?

If you look here http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm you'll see that Congress supposedly dropped 20 points in one week. That looks to be more a statistical anomaly.

Whereas if you look here http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm you'll see Bush has had an abysmal rating for quite a long time.

Bush is certainly involved. This disapproval is because the public wants the dems to follow through on the platform that got them elected, and actually stop the war and give Bush and Cheney public spankings.

Throw them all out, I say!

What's your point exactly Jongstraw? The democrats only own one house in congress...the other is split down the middle...and can get near to nothing done.

Alot of us are impatient that nothing the dems said they were going to do is getting done, and so we're unhappy with congress...STILL. I'll reserve my judgement of the democratic congress for when it truly is one.

The only difference now in terms of poll numbers is that the approval of the 28 percenters on the right has gone bye bye because the GOP no longer controls it...purely ignorant partisanship on their part.

you going to site 81 percent after 9/11 and put the decline on Pelosi? What were the numbers before the last election again? That's a pretty transparent effort.

What I'm not happy about is Pelosi and Reid keeping impeachment off the table.

But I'm not unhappy about their inability to compromise with many of the republicans, who frankly, cannot be compromised with. They've shifted things so far in favor of the corporation in this country that anywhere in the middle is still a disservice to the American people.

Where there has been compromise this president has threatened over and over to veto, trampling the will of the people time and time again. So yeah, they can't get anything done.

Of 3 branches of government, the people own one half of one...and I'm not naive enough to believe we even fully own that half...it should be no surprise to anybody that that half has no real power.

Well it definitely does look like an anomaly. It's not a reading I would pounce on. Congress typically has lowers reading than the President at ANY time and part of that (as I metioned in a previous thread) is the simple division of power among so many Congressional members makes CLEAR progress difficult to measure.

Also, I agree with Mal4prez (Hi Mal!) Most of our Congresspeople are lackluster triangulating politicians. It's not like deliberative bodies are mushy everywhere... why, they've had regular donnybrooks in Parliament! There's too much backscratching that comes from the lock that our two-party system has on Congress.

Well Rightous9, I can't exactly explain my point to this post. I suppose it may have something to do with the fact that Democrats have a history of living & breathing by what poll numbers tell them, and the recent Congress has failed to deliver anything that they got their supporters so riled up over last year. See...it works both ways...if you think America elected these Dems to launch investigation after investigation, or to offer up an illegal alien amnesty program, or threaten to raise taxes and threaten to eliminate incentives for business growth affecting Wall Street as they have done so far...I can see why America is fed up with Pelosi and her Congress. It points to the hard political reality.....look what they just did, pass & expand the Domestic Surveillance program...I'm sure the hard-core Left went ape-shit over that..Why'd they do it?...'Cause maybe when you hold the reins of power you see a bigger picture, you are presented with real tough decisions and options for our country, and sometimes you do what is in the best interest of the country, not necessarily your political voter base. I also posted this most recent Gallup Poll because as others have stated here...this info is not being widely acknowledged by the media...gee, I wonder why. And that why is...because the anti-Bush Liberal Media's own numbers are all in the tank as well...NBC, MSNBC, CBS, NY Times , San Fran. Chronicle, Wash. Post et al are all suffering huge losses of readership and audiences and advertising dollars. Admitting that their one-sided vitriolic agenda has hurt Democrats is something they don't wanna do.

oh...my...god.

did you just say the democrats acted in the best interest of the country?

That seems a little schitzo I thought that democrats hated america? or are you not in that camp?

But your particular citation had me going ape shit, yeah. You are right about one thing, many of the democrats we have in office aren't above telling us what we want to hear. I'm not positive they don't like the status quo, frankly. I'm not positive they don't like not getting anything done. They can bitch and moan this way, and not piss off any of their corporate backers.

The only people not going ape-shit about that surveilance program are the people who don't understand its implications fully. Yeah, that was totally discraceful, and I should have remembered it when I posted above. Was that just handled by the Senate though? or did the congress weigh in? If it was the full congress, then I've got no good words.

Yeah, and it seems more obvious all the time that our goverment is secretive, misleading and wasteful. Doesn't matter which party; both have been responsible for letting corporations take control of our government.

But righteous has a point that the dems have tried to make changes, but the repubs and Bush aren't letting them. Pelosi and Reid just don't have the power.

In fact, even if this low approval rating holds out and isn't a statistical fluke, it's not purely a judgement on Pelosi and the Dems. I wouldn't even see it as a sign that the dems will lose seats in 2008. I think the reverse will happen - more repubs will get cast out so that Congress can finally clean up this mess that Bush and his cronies have made.

Well, that's what I hope, anyway...

OMG!!! Better break out the down jacket and gloves! So, what you YOU want Congress to do as of this point?

Personally, I'd like them to start investigating some folks with the idea of impeachment on the table.

I want them to vote for election reform NOW. No more black-box voting!

I want them to go over the budget and eliminate all the pork. Yep, ALL of it. Take all that money and put it towards government-run health care.

While they're at it, reform the tax code. Make us and corporations equal.

Repeal NAFYA, CAFTA, SHAFTA and the DMCA.

Raise the minimum wage to something resembling liveable.

Pull troops out of Iraq in a year starting now. NO permanent bases there either!

Oh yeah- and REQUIRE television and radio the provide FREE airtime for Presidential and Congressional candidates.

Also Rap, I see your on the board and I had a question about what your concerns were about government involvement in health care.

Meh, I wanna see the lot of em standing in the unemployment line with no health care and having to ride the bus, if they can find and catch one, cause they can't afford enough gas to run a car.

See how they like what they've foisted on us, let them slave away as some corporations bitch and then get robbed in taxes by their own policies.

That's what I would settle for, since everyone here knows by now I would most like to see the whole feckless lot of em swingin from a rope like they really deserve.

Oh and Levin ? your constituents have by now heard ALL about you phoning in foreign policy advice from Tel Aviv where you're spending your cushy little vacation on taxpaper money - don't expect to be sittin in that chair next year, buddy, you job is to represent THIS government, not someone else's.

Realistically, I think a good move would be for the states to raise the sovereignity and nullification issue again, if the bastards on capitol hill cannot be trusted with power, start cutting them off from it... it'd mean tightening our belts a little since they'd chop federal funding on us, but if it comes to cases, the states could refuse to shell out since none is coming back, right ?

A topic in and of itself, well worth exploring.

As for Congress overall - I know some of why they're not "doing anything".

Senate repubicans filibustered debate 77 times as of two weeks ago..

So I completely understand why the Democrats are at a standstill.

But they're not even making the right noises. Pelosi should step down as speaker so that the House can get on with investigation and impeachment. And Senate Democrats need to start getting the message out.

That may be some of it, but I suspect that their inaction has more to do with the fact they are as deeply invested in "politics as usual" as the republicans are.

Point taken, Rue - but I am long past the point of expecting the mainstream press to do anything but sing us mockingbird lullabys about celebrity bullshit hoping to distract us, so I'm no longer really caring what they cover, none of it's meaningful anyway, they've devolved the whole baliwick to infotainment and soundbites.

You want real news these days you have to dig for it, cause even most so-called counterculture sites are co-opted "dissent management" resources, and a lot of the ones with real muckrakers are not so reliable because most muckrakers are either a little bit (or a lot!) on the loony side, or have their own axes to grind.

So finding anything resembling actual "news" takes more work these days than most folk wanna invest - which is no doubt just how the cabal likes it.

There were WMD in Iraq, just not what we expected. Give the surge a chance.Leaving Iraq before the Gov't has a chance to stand on its own would lead to a true civil war, with 100,000's of more lives being lost and destablilizing a large portion of the middle east w/ no military presence to put out the fire. Now I'll admit that I am baffled at this nameless, all powerful person/persons behind the concept that we MUST establish a full time base there. I'm not sure I'm sold on that idea.

I don't want Gov't health care because I prefer the free market. It seems to work just fine with grocery stores, pizza delivery, car insurance, gas stations, home suupply, etc... We don't have Gov't running any of those outfits, do we? And yet the goods / services get deliverd just fine. Why should healthcare be any different?

Obviously I'm not sold on the idea of permanent bases either. So basically your goal for Iraq is stability. What about democracy? What about unity? Part of the package, or not?

Well, I would prolly pick apart some of your examples. Grocery stores and home improvement stores and many clothing stores offer goods cheaply and efficiently. But car insurance, gas stations, and the software and entertainment industries? I think their prices are way way inflated.

And health care isn't available like grocery stores, where the free market seems to work well. Maybe it's because when you NEED health care you're not about to shop around, or maybe it's because the health care industry has a gazillion lobbyists everywhere and grocery stores don't, or maybe it's because health care is just too expensive for the average person under ANY circumstances, but for some reason health care really seems to follow a different model than grocery stores or even the entertainment industry. It's NEVER seemed to follow the grocery store model and I'm not sure if it can be induced to head in that direction. or even what it would take to get it moving that way.

It's stupid to compare healthcare with a grocery store. One sells goods and the other services and you can't equate the two business models. Market economics works best when it comes to sale of goods because you are selling identical items that can be manufactured/distributed/sold in bulk. If product X has a big following and makes money then competitors will be encouraged to make their own product X and over time the costs will fall. It is that competition that drives the market and ensures lower prices.

Unfortunately healthcare is a service which means it essentially a one and one arrangement between service supplier and service provider. There is no economy of scale because it's a tailored service that is is based on expensive labour. It is hard to imagine how a pure market could address that (unless we did something radical like train doctors for free on the understanding that for the next X years a percentage of their billable time would be pro-bono.)

Try Government-mandated and sponsored monopoly, as it is required by law, and given the history of them not living up to their end of the contract, changing it without end user approval or even notice, or just plain out and out ripoffs, if it wasn't required by law, most folk would dump the bastards - all that money and the first thing they do with it is hire lawyers to use against you, the so-called customer(victim).

Once again, busting on folks who say "Free Market" but wither and crumble when the BS is stripped off - and grocery stores ? un huh, when big boxers move in and buy off the local govs zoning board and then use every conceivable bit of shystering to create an artificial monopoly, hiding behind the Gov to protect them from effective competitor or community retaliation.

Sponsored and protected monopolies are not Free Market, that's just more doublespeak.

I'm all for training doctors for free however, that'd be a start given it would remove a lot of the pressure on docs to cut corners to make a buck cause they're laboring under some pretty extreme expenses starting out - for the cost of an aircraft carrier or attack sub we already got plenty of, I'm sure you could train quite a few doctors... if they're gonna rob my payroll, at least put the ill gotten gains to a decent use, yeah.

This thread is from the month I first saw Firefly, and likely the month I first visited here.

My introduction to the characters here. And so accurate, practically nobody has changed in how delusional or realistic they were. Sigs and rue/kiki seem to have not learned anything in the intervening years.
Refreshing to see how RapKnight and Jongsy were always right on target.

And even better yet, this helps expose how delusional the Libtards were, just as the Rock-The-Vote Libtards swept in during Jan 2007 were about to accomplish their greatest feat - the Rock-The-Vote Recession, which they started in the very first month of their very first Fiscal Year Budget disaster, October 2007. These Libtards all rushing headlong into the worst Recession in the nation's history.

Democrats have destroyed their chances with Latinos.

That was their future. They destroyed their future.

You might as well give blacks reparations and rich white kids free college now.

You're fuckin' done.

We should take this time to look back and remember that this is the guy that the Hollywood Celebrities wanted you to vote for.

And then remember to never take any of their opinions seriously again.
