Yes Dubai is rich, but look at how evil and depraved some of the stuff that goes on there is

I'm not excusing some of the Guantánamo crap USA did but read about the crazy fascist style crap that happens in the Muslim world

This is real torture:

The Sheikh begins by stuffing sand down the man's mouth, as the police officers restrains the victim.

Then he fires bullets from an automatic rifle around him as the man howls incomprehensibly.

At another point on the tape, the Sheikh can be seen telling the cameraman to come closer.

"Get closer. Get closer. Get closer. Let his suffering show," the Sheikh says.

Over the course of the tape, Sheikh Issa acts in an increasingly sadistic manner.

He uses an electric cattle prod against the man's testicles and inserts it in his anus.

At another point, as the man wails in pain, the Sheikh pours lighter fluid on the man's testicles and sets them aflame.

Then the tape shows the Sheikh sorting through some wooden planks. "I remember there was one that had a nail in it," he says on the tape.

The Sheikh then pulls down the pants of the victim and repeatedly strikes him with board and its protruding nail. At one point, he puts the nail next to the man's buttocks and bangs it through the flesh.

"Where's the salt," asks the Sheikh as he pours a large container of salt on to the man's bleeding wounds.

The victim pleads for mercy, to no avail.

The final scene on the tape shows the Sheikh positioning his victim on the desert sand and then driving over him repeatedly. A sound of breaking bones can be heard on the tape.

What you read above is real torture.

The muslims were rioting, looting and burning down embassies after somebody drew a funny cartoon.

I wonder how many of them will be out protesting after the latest suicide bomb
or how many will be out protesting after their holy Shiek got caught on tape red handed.

Maybe those rumors about ISLAM and VIOLENCE have an element of truth to them

Meh. THAT'S not REAL torture, try the 1-inch per minute lowering into the industrial meat grinder thing- THAT'S torture!

That was sarcasm, btw. Just because one torture can always be topped by another, doesn't make the lesser one something else, just a different level.

That is pretty damned horrific.

But Chris is right. Just because someone is doing something worse, is not an excuse to betray our own values.

Sh*t like that goes on all the time in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Dubai. I personally know a guy who's cousin's 14 y/o son was sexually abused to death by a Saudi prince. WHen the mom complained he tossed her $5000 and told her to get lost.

That doesn't seem to stop us from supporting them tho.

Dubai etc are loved by Cheney because they can hoard their Haliburton profits there, but in the end these Arabs will stab us in the back

while Iran etc aren't Arabs, these guys tell us they hate us to our face, they won't bother with the knife in the back trick

Dubai is a modern day tower of Babylon, its all going to go up in smoke

and the radicalism in these regions is probably going to cause it all to end in one flash of atomic fire

The ABC article on this goes on to say...
Quote:

Nabulsi says officials at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi were aware of the torture tapes but took no action to protest the Sheikh's action. The UAE is considered a stalwart U.S. ally in the region, with close cooperation in working against al Qaeda. The U.S. Navy has an important base outside Dubai. Nabulsi says he even showed portions of the tape to a Department of Homeland Security official stationed in Abu Dhabi to train UAE police, Bill Wallrap. Nabulsi says after the U.S. official watched the tapes, he advised Nabulsi to "gather your family and get out of the country as soon as possible for your own safety."

Now, there is ONE mitigating factor: The Sheik Issa is not part of the government. However, the government has certainly covered it up.

I'm not the one claiming that you want to see thousands of Americans killed, nor saying that you're sympathetic to radical Xtian extremists. I'm not buying into your effort to redirect the discussion either, and my question still stands, : Has Xtianity fundamentally changed in the past 100 years? Feel free to add any caveats or explanations that you feel are necessary.

BTW- IN case it needs an explanation, the proposition was that this brutality was due to Islam. I pointed out similar brutality during Xtianity's history. The point is whether brutality is due to the religion itself, to an extant feudal structure of kings and princes and so forth, individual pathology, or some combination. If its due to religion, is there hope that religions can change or can be changed?

I know its not the simple proposition that you favor, but I'm looking for alternate and possibly more realistic explanations.

The Lords Resistance Army is a radical Christian group committed to creating a theocracy in Uganda:
Quote:

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) , led by Joseph Kony, operated in the north from bases in southern Sudan. The LRA committed numerous abuses and atrocities, including the abduction, rape, maiming, and killing of civilians, including children. In addition to destabilising northern Uganda from bases in Sudan, the LRA congregated in the Bunia area in eastern Congo. They linked up with the Army for the Liberation of Rwanda (ALIR) and other rebel groups battling with forces from the Rally for Congolese Democracy (RCD)

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/lra.htm

If these guys were Muslim, they'd be on the news all the time proving the EVIL!!! of Islam. Since they're Christian hardly anybody cares, or even knows they exist. A Muslim fanatic does something, it's proof all Muslims are evil and Islam is the evilist religion, Christians do something and it really doesn't say anything about Christianity, you understand. Double standard anyone?

And for the record, the troubles in Ireland are probably more akin to the problems of the Gaza strip. Another double standard there, if the British had treated the Irish as the Israelis treat the Palestinians, not only would the Irish reaction have been even worse, but the British would have been condemned and vilified world wide. While the Israelis are portrayed as poor victims while they act just a viciously and violently (albeit more efficiently) as the Palestinians.
[Sarcasm]
Of course it is different, the Irish are white Caucasians, and Palestinians are Arabs, they have to realise they're lower beings and deserve to be killed on mass.

Fuckin' towel heads eh.
[/Sarcasm]

NOW I know where you guys / gals on the Left get your ideas.

SecState Clinton's exchange w/ Rep. Dana Rohrabacher was very telling of EXACTLY how folks on here, and generally Libs everywhere, deal w/ being asked a direct question.

( Oddly enough, while looking for quotes to post here to make my case, I found THIS curious distortion of the facts. ) http://hillary.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2009/04/23/hillary_lays_the_sma
ck_down

Quote:

In another bold move, when Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) asked asked Clinton about former Vice President Dick Cheney's effort to declassify documents he says prove the "success" of harsh interrogation techniques, Madame Secretary had this zinger:

Well, it will not surprise you that I do not consider him a particularly reliable source of information.

Only , that's NOT what the Congressman asked. The question asked was this -

" Are you in favor of releasing the documents which Dick Cheney has been requesting be released."

THAT right there is the direct, straight forward question which SecState Clinton was asked. In standard Clinton ( and yes, political fashion,) Hillary replies that she doesn't find him ( Mr Cheney ) to be a reliable source. SO WHAT ? That was NOT the question! She took time to make a personal swipe at the former VP and his credibility, and completely dodged the SPECIFIC question asked.

This folks, is EXACTLY how I see most of you. Dodging questions asked, and instead, replying w/ a snide, pointless and baseless quip. Rep. Rohrabacher, to his credit, wasn't phased and didn't sink to Mrs. Clinton's level, he restated the question, clarifying and reiterating the key issue, if she AGREED that the papers should be released,in full, or not.

She never answers. She says that " we should get to the bottom of this matter ", but never even comments on the FULL release of the papers.

And wonder of wonders, before the Rep can ask,for a THIRD time, the good SecState, time happens to run out!

Darn the luck of it all! Who'd have thunk it!

Clearly, I'm taking on all serious and relevant questions. And I'm not even stooping to the level of our current SecState by sliding in any insults.

I ask you, as a side note, when did Condi Rice ever say anything remotely snide or vindictive towards an opposing party member while dodging a question ?? I can't think of 1 single time, yet Hillary's only been on the job a few months, and this is how she reacts. And now you're insulting. Kwickie has been asking me a lame ass question for a while now, and I've explained more than once that it's a false analogy to anything of significance being discussed. Your condescending attitude only further amplifies my point, that the Left is more interested in character assassination than honest debate. Thanks.

HOW?

Also, you continue to evade MY question, which was for examples of where you feel "the left" has dodged YOUR questions.

I'm not falling for the clever attempt to be drawn into even discussing it.

I'll ask you to restate the question, please.

THATWEIRDGIRL

Torture is torture. It's all sick and disturbing. Some is more stomach churning to be sure, but just as bad as any other.

We need to cut our ties to UAE. The sooner we develop realistic non-oil energy solutions, the happier I'll be. Hell, I'd be happy to suffer a few years of bike riding and snuggling for heat. I don't care if my parents' jobs benefit from the energy market. I trust they can adapt. Their skills are not energy dependent.

Let's break off our relationship to UAE now. TODAY!

Discussing what? We were discusing several things. AFA questions, I have several, actually.

The first one had to do with whether the Sheikh Issa's brutal behavior had to do with Islam. I gave examples of brutality in Xtianity's history, which you said was too far in the past to be anything except of historical interest. So, do you think Xtianity has fundamentally changed in the past 100 year or so? The point of the question is whether we can attirbute Sheikh Issa's horrific violence to his religion, to a tribal/ feudal culture, to an individual pathology, a combination or somehting else. And more importantly, whatever the causative factor(s) how can they be changed?

My second question was a direct response to your statment
Quote:

This folks, is EXACTLY how I see most of you. Dodging questions asked, and instead, replying w/ a snide, pointless and baseless quip.
It seems to me that the people doging question most often... at least here on the board... tend NOT to be "most of us". So I asked you very specifically to come up with examples of questions which YOU felt had been dodged.

My third question was in response to your statement that Kwicko's analogy was a "false" analogy. I simply asked "how"? You made an assertion which I really don't agree with. I can't imagine HOW you consider his analogy to be False", in fact, it seems logically consistent all the way through. So I would like an explanation.

All pretty simple questions, I think.

AFA Clinton dodging the question: It apears that the Obama administration is unfortunately continuing the policy of the Bush II administration and (for all I know) the Clinton administration before that and the Bush I administration before that. OF COURSE she dodged the question: It's a horrific policy and she's a politician. In the previous admin the tape was never made public (altho Washington knew about it) so no questions had to be dodged.

So, there are the questions, with context and without any snide remarks (I hope).

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

The knowledge of this, as well as the video, have been out for nearly a year, if not longer.

"Huge lawsuit features Sheikh's 'torture' films
5:00AM Wednesday Jun 18, 2008

As a trusted adviser to a member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, Texas businessman Bassam Nabulsi says he safeguarded the Sheikh's most important documents: financial records, investment documents and videotapes showing the Sheikh torturing people with a cattle prod and a spiked plank.

When the business relationship began to deteriorate, Nabulsi says, he also was imprisoned for months and tortured by jailers trying to get the tapes back.

The tapes have not been made public but the AP viewed 11 still frames from one of the videos."

Why it hit the news cycle at this time rather than earlier, is beyond me.

***************************************************************

Updated: knowledge of this is 3 years old:

No plans to release tapes
After what Nabulsi described as prodding from the local U.S. Embassy, Nabulsi was released in July 2005 and taken directly to the airport. His family left the next day. They left a significant amount of possessions behind, he said.

Nabulsi filed the lawsuit in 2006 in hopes of getting some of the money he insists the partnership owes him. The suit languished because he could not get the sheikh or any of his representatives served. Finally that was accomplished on June 19 (2008).

Yes, I see your point perfectly now, Rappy - that's not insulting or dismissive AT ALL!

Congrats - you've just engaged in the EXACT behavior that you're chastising "the left" for doing. And you do it every single day of your life.

Now, as for the question, I posed a scenario to you. It boils down to this: Do you accept Iran's "right" to torture or "harshly interrogate" American citizens? Why or why not? (Hint: "Because they're them and we're us" is not an answer!)

It's not an irrelevant question; it may be one that you don't WANT to answer, but it's not one that you shouldn't think about and address, because we are exceedingly likely to be facing this scenario, sooner rather than later.

I was hoping you'd have the courage to take a stand, but you never have, so I suppose you never will. Cowardice, thy name is Rappy!

Irony, much?

You've just been drawn into "even discussing it". And then you ask to have the question repeated, so you can discuss it further!

And he doesn't even see the hypocrisy inherent in his positions.

Why would Iran "harshly interrogate" your American citizen in question? I believe you are using the female reporter as your real world example. Would they do it for military reasons? Would they do it for spite? Did America do it for spite?
