Apparently his car got airborne for a few hundred yards and then slammed into the Turn 2 wall, where it just broke apart. Wheldon died of his injuries. He was 33 years old. :(

PirateNews been there done that

This is what kosher F1 kingpin Bernie Ecclestone calls "a natural culling effect". Sir Bernie became a billionaire with that attitude, which included banning all US drivers and teams from Indycar racing, and put the Indycar Series into bankruptcy and oblivion. Today, no US cars, engines or tires are allowed in Indycar racing. Wheldon was a wetback trying for a $5-million payoff at Vegas, THAT NO OTHER DRIVER WAS ELIGIBLE FOR.

Promoter apparently made him start in the back "for entertainment", then he refused to back off the throttle when the crash started in front of him. But yellow flags should've eliminated an advantage to do that, unless Indy changed to NASCRAP rules. He had a greed for speed, and it kilt him.

Like woman, I am a mystery.

Very proud of IndyCar and everyone involved for the decision to end the race right there. But still, absolutely tragic loss. Anytime someone dies on the track, it's always like a punch to the gut but when it's a star the caliber of Wheldon, it just hurts that much more.

Oh, and Jimmie Johnson, I like you and all but please, shut the fuck up.

Socialist and unashamed about it.

I'm guessing you're referring to Jimmuh's "IndyCar doesn't belong on ovals" remark? I wonder if anyone has informed him where INDY cars got that name.

Also, I seem to remember a NASCAR driver killed on an oval not too long ago, from a crash that looked about 10,000 times less violent than the one that killed Wheldon (I'm speaking of Dale Sr., of course).

That was indeed what I was referencing. I wonder if he'd have had the balls to say F1 cars shouldn't run on road courses had he been around for Ayrton Senna's death. But yeah, deaths happen on the track. Thankfully, one hasn't happened for Indycars since Paul Dana back in 2006. So the cars are getting safer and it's not like back 30-40 years ago where this was a little more commonplace. But there's only so much they can do to prevent this kind of thing from happening. You make something go 200+ MPH and then slam it into something, it's going to cause damage no matter how cushioned the walls are (or catch fence in this case). Fact is, Indycars have raced on ovals many many many many times (including Las Vegas) without any deaths occurring.

There's gotta be a racecar version of valhalla up there just for them guys, seriously.

And yeah, someone hand Jimmy another beer so he'll just shut up.

Hell, I like the idea that Terry Blount of ESPN wrote about today and that's enclosing the cockpits like on hydroplane boats. Seems to me that'd make things a lot safer and also keep the cars on the same tracks.
