Headline sorta gives the impression that one can start in Scotland and end up in Turkey.

Some experts believe the network was a way of protecting man from predators while others believe that some of the linked tunnels were used like motorways are today, for people to travel safely regardless of wars or violence or even weather above ground.

What ever the reason, that's a heck of a lot of effort put into building these tunnels. Given the technology of the day, even if they incorporated natural tunnels, it's still very jaw dropping.

From what it sound like they're not that extensive, though certain regions have some impressively long tunnels that get up to about a kilometer.

However, it's interesting in that they probably do tie into some mythological stories I'm aware of. The greeks in particular liked to talk about entrances to the underworld, some of which were landmarked by the confluence of some rivers.

So people built those, or are they cave tunnels. That's pretty cool, even though the title is bogus.

Hello,

I would guess that ancient people made use of existing features, perhaps widening or lengthening them. It’s possible that these things are scratch-built, but I consider it far more likely that the builders would look for natural features they could harness to their advantage.
