Wow Bren, I use to live up in the NW, and never even knew about that area.

Looks cool.

I'm sorry to say I think that death toll is nowhere near what it will end up being. Shocking.

I've had lots of friends hike in Nepal. It sounded like a lovely place to holiday and the Nepalese people have a reputation for being very friendly and hospitable.

Very sad.

I wonder if Mt. Everest is a bit taller than it was.

You can look at the quake and aftershocks here:

Oh, btw Brenda, the USGS still lists them as the Queen Charlottes.

You may have known those islands by their former name which was the Queen Charlottes. Haida Gwaii is their Haida name and they were renamed after being turned back to the Haida a few years ago. Many old totems and structures up there. Not a large population because of its remoteness.

Naw, was just too young to know my geography. And it seems that's no small patch of island either. Seems it may be a nice place to get away and explore ?

Well, as India is slamming into the continent of S. Asia, veeeeeery slowly, I'd say Mt Everest could get a good bit taller.

May take a few more million years though.

It wasn't even a ant hill when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. In fact, it was UNDER the surface of the ocean.

A major earthquake struck Nepal today, just weeks after the country was devastated by a deadly quake, that left 36 dead and over 1,000 injured.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 11.5 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It was followed closely by at least five aftershocks measuring from magnitude 5.6 to magnitude 6.3.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located near the town of Namche Bazaar, close to Mount Everest and about 47 miles east of the capital of Kathmandu.

In Kathmandu, today's quake sent people rushing outside of their homes into the streets. Police gave no immediate estimate on damage.

Geologically, it's a marvel to have 2 such events occur in such close proximity, but man... such a heavy toll.

That sounds reasonable. Everest didn't get to be so tall gently or softly. Mountain building is a powerful, violent process.
