Get a grip already. Those senators are saying what Trump did was too little to remove him over it.

And, from (somewhat) following the proceedings, I think the democrats knew it. The testimony was a bust. NO ONE could testify they heard Trump firsthand say anything about anything, except *I WANT NOTHING*. So the democrats had to fall back to the transcript itself which was a big, fat nothing burger. Which they also knew. So they had to make up (with the help of the NYTimes) a Bolt-on moment, kind of like what they did with Kavanaugh. Which worked about as well as it did with Kavanaugh.

I know Trump is your personal bête noire. Yanno he's richer than you, more famous than you, he's a republican, and he's even president. And he's NONE of those things you think about yourself when you recite to yourself why being rich means you're better than everyone.

But dooood, get over yourself.

I will repeat myself, since you clearly did not understand. This is the key paragraph from Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska):

"The President’s behavior was shameful and wrong. His personal interests do not take precedence over those of this great nation. The president has the responsibility to uphold the integrity and honor of the office. Not just for himself but for all future presidents. Degrading the office, by actions or even name calling, weakens it for future presidents, and weakens our country."

But those aren't high crimes or misdemeanors.

It looks like she would have been happier if the Senate had censured Trump. But she QUITE OBVIOUSLY wasn't on board with removal. If she was, she would have voted for it.

Maybe that explanation helps you have a better grip on reality.

Indeed, KIKI. SECOND, get a grip.

There is nothing in the Constitution about removing a President because he did something "inappropriate" or "shameful". The Founding Fathers spent quite a bit of time discussing what would require removing a President.

Well, treason, for one. Did Trump commit treason? High crimes, and "misdemeanors" But in those days, the word didn't mean the same thing as today, and we know this because the FF left actual written records about what they meant. It would be more like embezzlement: pocketing large amounts of government money, for example.

The FF definitely did NOT want a partisan impeachment, which is why they required a 2/3 majority. They did NOT want impeachment for "malpractice" ... in other words, Congress disagrees with the President's foreign policies, since foreign policy is the President's purview. We know this because they left writings about that too.

Seriously, wipe the spittle off your mouth and go watch The Biggest Little Farm. It's a delightful and inspiring movie, I think you'd like it.

There might be a better thread to put this in, but I guess I'll put it here:

What went wrong with this impeachment process? Well, for one thing, Schifty decided to treat the entire House as if it was the prosecution.

And the Senate is the jury, NOT an investigating body.

So, between the House and the Senate, where's the defense? In a trial, there's the prosecution AND a defense. And if you're not going to have a defense per se, where's the full-scope investigation into ALL of the facts?

What happened in the House didn't just LOOK like a partisan star chamber, that's exactly what it was.

I'm ecstatic the democrats failed! You can tell by the way democrats structured it, this whole process was a malodorous coup attempt.

Having downloaded and watched the movie The Biggest Little Farm, I am now in perfect harmony with Trump. I look forward to another 4 years of him serving the nation with wisdom, competence, fortitude, etc.

“The film chronicles eight years of daunting work and outsize idealism as they attempt to create the utopia they seek, planting 10,000 orchard trees and over 200 different crops, and bringing in animals of every kind– including an unforgettable pig named Emma and her best friend, Greasy the rooster. When the farm’s ecosystem finally begins to reawaken, so does the Chesters’ hope – but as their plan to create perfect harmony takes a series of wild turns, they realize that to survive they will have to reach a far greater understanding of the intricacies and wisdom of nature, and of life itself.”

Nothing you post can change my mind, SECOND. Because unlike you, I actually listened to the testimony. Let me rephrase that - the SWORN testimony. Not the rumor from the NYTimes. Not Schifty's fantasizing. Not Pelosi's mean-girls high school reprisal. Not Romney's political grandstanding. The actual SWORN testimony of record. And I've watched the process. There was no overarching investigation into all the facts. There was no defense.

This was a biased political lynching based on rumor and opinion.

The Senate did NOT try to amass a full public record of Trump’s misconduct. The Senate would have called Witnesses who are compelled, against Trump's orders, to testify. That would include looking into serious questions about the president’s personal business interests in Turkey and the Persian Gulf, as well as China and other foreign countries, along with the big-picture question of violations of the emoluments clause and his continued stonewalling of legally valid requests for his tax returns.

The Watergate inquiry, after all, ended up uncovering evidence of misdeeds that were actually much more wide-ranging and severe than helping cover up a burglary at the DNC. But that only came about because investigators decided to really kick the tires of the whole situation rather than maintaining a laser-like focus on the easiest-to-explain narrative.

1kiki, you know nothing. You have never been on a Grand Jury, have you? They will take only a few hours to look over a case. Then a trial is scheduled, in this case at the Senate. Then the trial could last many months. And the jury, the Senate, has to sit there day after day, week after week. They even have alternate jurors, just in case a juror gets sick or does something stupid and gets kicked out of court. The judge would not want to have to redo the whole trial because one of twelve jurors was missing . . .

1kiki, you know nothing about real trials. Oh, and I forgot that the person on trial does not have the right to order witnesses not to testify. Trump, on trial, was ordering witnesses not to testify. That is not allowed in a real trial, but it is in Mitch McConnell's fake Senate trial.

I'm sorry, but your babbling changes nothing.

The Senate is the jury. It's not the prosecution. It's not the defense. It's not a grand jury. The Senate is under no obligation to go and solicit extra testimony.

The House presented its case to the jury. But - based on the sworn testimony of the 'witnesses' - the case was weak, and the Senate decided 'not guilty'.

The House democrats blew it.

Wrong again, 1kiki. 48% of the Senate voted that Trump was guilty. Trump only received 46% of the popular vote in 2016. More justification to remove him than to elect him.

Twist and turn all you want SECOND. You've failed in your arguments.

I guarantee that you've never been on a jury panel where the jurors called people to the witness stand. You've never been on a jury panel that took it upon itself to do investigation.

The Senate did its job. It rendered its judgment.

Not my problem. I figured to vote for the Democrat, but if Trump wins, I win more money and so much more entertainment. Sadly, when the Democrat wins, The Trump Show gets cancelled and the GOP Senators will filibuster everything, which is a loss. Taking everything into consideration, I come out ahead with 4 more years of Trump. My tax accountant has satisfactorily proved that.

You spend a great deal of energy defending Trump when you won't even vote for him. You are not well in mind, body, and spirit. Second is a diseased brain. A sociopath without any empathy whatsoever.

As a sociopath, however, he is still prone to feelings of guilt despite the fact that he cannot stop himself from being a terrible person to everyone around him. Hence the daily virtue signalling. It's the only way he can get any sleep at night.

It's also why he lashes out with pathetic personal attacks on people who just don't understand what an awesome and caring guy he is deep down, and why he constantly needs to go out of his way to validate himself by letting everyone know how much money he supposedly has.

There is zero reason to believe that he has any money or a successful business. It's the easiest thing in the world to lie about how great a person you are to other people who's names and faces you'll never know when they also don't know who you are.

Look at his posts from three years ago. They are identical to the posts he makes today. Some of them almost verbatim. In three years he has not grown one single inch as a person compared to the "man" he was in 2016. Just like Nilbog does, he resents other people who are making the best of what they have and are continually improving themselves. They both hate themselves and the beds they've made. They do nothing at all to actually improve their lot in life, and they hate to see others doing just that.

Here is different post for you. I respect Noam Chomsky because he was against the Vietnam War while I was too wrapped up in Nixon's rhetoric to listen to Chomsky telling me what was wrong. I listen now.

Remarks about Trump’s impeachment by Noam Chomsky in an article titled: Sanders Threatens the Establishment by Inspiring Popular Movements

https://truthout.org/articles/noam-chomsky-sanders-threatens-the-estab
lishment-by-inspiring-popular-movements
/

Noam Chomsky: It seemed clear from the outset that the impeachment effort could not be serious, and would end up being another gift by the Democrats to Trump, much as the Mueller affair was. Any doubts about its farcical nature were put to rest by its opening spectacle: Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts struggling to keep a straight face while swearing in senators who solemnly pledged that they would be unmoved by partisan concerns, and at once proceeded — as everyone know they would — to behave and vote along strictly party lines. Could there be a clearer exhibition of pure farce?

Are the crimes discussed a basis for impeachment? Seems so to me. Has Trump committed vastly more serious crimes? That is hardly debatable. What might be debatable is whether he is indeed the most dangerous criminal in human history (which happens to be my personal view). Hitler had been perhaps the leading candidate for this honor. His goal was to rid the German-run world of Jews, Roma, homosexuals and other “deviants,” along with tens of millions of Slav “Untermenschen.” But Hitler was not dedicated with fervor to destroying the prospects of organized human life on Earth in the not-distant future (along with millions of other species).

Trump is. And those who think he doesn’t know what he’s doing haven’t been looking closely.

Is that a wild and ludicrous exaggeration? Or the very simple and apparent truth? It’s not difficult to figure out the answer. We’ve discussed it often before. There is no need to review what is happening on Trump’s watch while he devotes every effort to accelerating the race to catastrophe, trailed by such lesser lights as Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro and Australia’s Scott Morrison. . . .

Trump modestly describes himself as “the Chosen One.” We have just witnessed an extraordinary event at the January Davos meeting of the Masters of the Universe, as they are called.

The conference opened with Trump’s oration about what a fabulous creature he is. The encomium was interrupted only by a comment that we should not be “alarmist” about the climate. His Magnificence was followed by the quiet and informed comments of a 17-year old girl instructing the heads of state, CEOs, media leaders and grand intellectuals about what it means to be a responsible adult.

Quite a spectacle.

Trump’s war on organized life on Earth is only the barest beginning. More narrowly, in recent days, the Chosen One has issued executive orders ridding the country of the plague of regulations that protect children from mercury poisoning and preserve the country’s water supplies and lands, along with other impediments to further enrichment of Trump’s primary constituency, extreme wealth and corporate power.

On the side, he has been casually proceeding to dismantle the last vestiges of the arms control regime that has provided some limited degree of security from terminal nuclear war, eliciting cheers from the military industry. And as we have just learned, the great pacifist who is committed to end interventions “dropped more bombs and other munitions in Afghanistan last year than any other year since documentation began in 2006, Air Force data shows.”

He is also ramping up his acts of war — which is what they are — against Iran. I won’t even go into his giving Israel what the Israeli press calls “a gift to the right,” formally giving the back of his imperial hand to international law, the World Court, the UN Security Council and overwhelming international opinion, while shoring up the Evangelical vote for the 2020 election. The prerogative of supreme power.

In brief, the list of Trump’s crimes is immense, not least the worst crime in human history. But none merit a nod in the impeachment proceedings. This is hardly a novelty; rather the norm. The current proceedings are often compared with Watergate. Nixon’s hideous crimes were eliminated from the charges against him despite the efforts of Rep. Robert Frederick Drinan and a few others. The Nixon impeachment charges focused on his illegal acts to harm Democrats.

Any resemblance to the farce that is now winding up? Does it suggest some insight into what motivates the powerful?

On a philosophical note, the real entities posting under the aliases of 'Signym', '1kiki', and '6ixStingJack' are not being harmed by my words. (I just fell into a trap. That sentence should have said 'are not being harmed by 'second's words.' Damn-it-all, I fell again by saying I rather than 'second'.) Karma recognizes that sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you when there is no 'you' walking around in the sunlight with the labels 'Signym', '1kiki', and '6ixStingJack' attached to them. Those labels are attached to ghosts moving around only in the fake place called fireflyfans.net, an uninhabited space where the sun does not shine and nobody is alive. Maybe a simpler explanation will be understood? There is no change in karma by smashing a nonliving thing, like a rock or a 'Signym'. Whatever a 'Signym' is, it is not alive, it is no more than a immaterial puppet. But if you confuse the 'Signym' puppet with the entity pulling the strings, you are a very confused entity.

It is not Trump's "views" that deserve impeachment. SECOND: Trump’s lawyers dismissed nearly all of that testimony as hearsay.

Trump's lawyers, and KIKI, and I, are CORRECT. It is a point that KIKI and I have been making over and over and over again. I listened to or read the testimony of the "bombshell" witnesses. KIKI was probably more thorough than I was. NOWHERE did I hear/read the magic words Trump told me or I heard Trump say. It was all about somebody (not Trump) telling them, and quite often that tidbit was because somebody else (NOT TRUMP) told the second person. That is the very definition of hearsay, but to help you out, here is the internet definition

Quote:

hearsay
n.Unverified information heard or received from another; rumor.
n. Evidence that is not within the personal knowledge of a witness, such as testimony regarding statements made by someone other than the witness, and that therefore may be inadmissible to establish the truth of a particular contention because the accuracy of the evidence cannot be verified through cross-examination.
n. Information communicated by another; report; common talk; rumor; gossip.

I srongly suggest that YOU do some digging into the ACTUAL TESTIMONY, as KIKI and I have ... not the media spin, not Schiff's "interpretations" but the ACTUAL TESTIMONY ... throw it against the definition of hearsay, and decide for yourself.

Quote:

Sondland’s “mistaken belief does not become proof because he repeated it many times,” Trump lawyer Mike Purpura said at the impeachment trial.
True. Sondland's belief is his personal belief. It's like any of your beliefs, or mine: NOT EVIDENCE. I may believe that the earth is flat, I may believe that Trump is guilty as sin. What does the evidence say? As KIKI has so often pointed out, when Sondland asked Trump directly what he wanted, Trump said I want nothing.

Quote:

Democratic prosecutors retorted that senators should then subpoena Bolton and others who dealt directly with Trump. Republicans blocked that in a 51-49 vote against hearing from additional witnesses, leaving unresolved the question of precisely what Trump said and did.
HOUSE DEMOCRATS should have subpoenaed Bolton, and his aide, and they COULD have, if they had waited for a court ruling supporting a subpoena. I posted this already, maybe you should read it this time (I've chopped it down to accommodate the attention-deficit)

Quote:

Johnathan Turley
[synopsis: Below is my column in The Hill newspaper on the continued effort to ignore the obvious and catastrophic decision of the House leadership to rush the impeachment vote by Christmas rather than complete the record against President Donald Trump. This denial continues despite the fact that, after saying that they had no time to seek witnesses or favorable court orders, the House leadership then waited a month before released the articles of impeachment. Clearly, the record would have been stronger if the House waited and sought to compel witnesses. It also would have kept control of the record and the case. I encouraged them to vote in March or April, which would have given them plenty of time to secure additional testimony and certainly a number of favorable court orders. However, recognizing this obvious blunder would take away from the narrative that the case failed only because the Republicans were protecting Trump in the Senate.

Here is the column:end synopsis
]

If you've read this far, you got the gist, but here is a edited version of the details...

Quote:

... After the Senate rejected witnesses and effectively ended the impeachment trial on Friday, the media ignored the primary reason for the defeat, which is the insistence of House leaders to impeach Trump by Christmas. Critics of the president simply do not want to hear that the blind rush to impeach guaranteed not only an acquittal but an easy case for acquittal. It is after all important for some members of the media to maintain that fools dwell only in Republican red states.

When I appeared before the House Judiciary Committee in November, I opposed four proposed articles of impeachment as legally flawed and explained that two would be legitimate if they were proven. The House Judiciary Committee rejected the challenged articles and accepted the two articles on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. That left one fundamental area of disagreement. I warned the panel that it was rushing to a failed impeachment by insisting on a vote by Christmas.

So this isn't Monday-morning quarterbacking. The Judiciary Committee was warned ahead of time
Quote:

This was the shortest impeachment investigation in American history. It was also the narrowest grounds and thinnest record for trial. I have previously noted that witnesses like former national security adviser John Bolton indicated that they were willing to testify if subpoenaed, and that a couple months would have likely secured more testimony and supportive court orders....

... So absent such a delay, the impeachment of Trump was guaranteed to fail, due to an incomplete and insufficient record. Yet the House insisted this was a “crime in progress” and there was no time to delay a submission to the Senate. It then immediately contradicted its rationale by waiting more than a month to submit articles of impeachment to the Senate. The House simply could not have made it easier on the president and his legal team.

The media ignored the obvious catastrophic blunder by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership. The media instead suggested that it was all some grand and brilliant scheme. They even credited the strategy with Bolton eventually coming forward to say he would testify with a subpoena, even though the same offer was made during the House investigation. The media also ignored the unexplained decision by the House to withdraw a subpoena for top Bolton aide Charles Kupperman, who went to court as a prerequisite for testimony, the same position taken by Bolton. Before the courts could even rule, the House mooted the case by withdrawing the subpoena. That made no sense, and the court dismissed the case after concluding that the House appeared to have no interest in the witness.

No harm would have come from pursuing testimony by Kupperman. Yet lead House manager Adam Schiff offered a facially dubious explanation that Kupperman had said he would litigate the issue. If Kupperman truly wanted to drag out litigation, he could have refused to appear before the House and waited for it to seek to compel his testimony. Instead, he said he just wanted a court order in favor of testifying for his own protection. Moreover, House Democrats continued to seek to compel the testimony of former White House counsel Donald McGahn, despite his continued litigation. It won that case as the House was voting on impeachment.

This is either a case of unimagineable bungling by Schiff and Pelosi, or they bobbled the ball on purpose.

Karma knows when you are bullshitting, Signym. You wrote: "HOUSE DEMOCRATS should have subpoenaed Bolton, and his aide, and they COULD have, if they had waited for a court ruling supporting a subpoena." The key word is wait. The Democrats subpoenaed tax returns years ago and they will be waiting until after the election for Supreme Court to decide. Subpoena Bolton and the Democrats will have to wait until 2021. That is because Bolton wants you to buy his book in 2020, not get free information from the House of Representatives in committee hearing next year.

John Bolton has a $2 million book deal. That is why the Democrats did not subpoena Bolton. He has too much money to lose and so he and his lawyers will defy the Democrats and delay testifying until after his book comes out. The Democrats cannot arrest Bolton and force him to testify. All they can do is file paperwork with the courts and hope that someday, after the book is out, Bolton goes on a book promotional tour where he makes a stop at Congress to testify.

Well if that's the case, the assets from Bolton's work of fiction should be frozen. If somehow his testimony was the magic bullet that nobody else was able to give, but he's going to put it in a book released after the impeachment sham, then he shouldn't be able to profit from it.

Maybe the proceeds of the book can go to clean the shit off the streets of California.

I agree. As long as Bolt-on has financial motives to either withold testimony, or (alternatively) bump book sales, his testimony is questionable. Remove financial incentives. It would be for the good of the nation.

SECOND, your whinging does not explain why the House withdrew its subpoena for Bolt-on's aide, Kupperman. Supposedly they got a favorable court ruling but it was mooted by the House withdrawal.

I knew that the vote would fall short of 67 to remove Trump. I knew in 1973.

There were not 67 votes to remove Nixon because of Watergate. If Nixon had acted like Trump by refusing to give Congress the Watergate Tapes, with Nixon testifying against Nixon in Nixon's own words, as Trump refused to give Congress his tax returns, despite Trump being ordered to on six different occasions by six different courts, Nixon would have beat the charges just like Trump beat them.

Nixon had the same approval rating as Trump with GOP voters, until the Watergate Tapes. Nixon could have destroyed those tapes. He surrendered them. Trump would not surrender. Trump learned that technique from Roy Cohn, a fabulously capable lawyer who understood you win, in America, by never giving in and never being afraid to lie under oath by saying "I don't know" and never be afraid to destroy evidence. All you need do is set a fire, shrug, and say the evidence burned up accidentally. "I don't know what happened. It was a very unfortunate and inexplicable occurrence." It is daring the court to hold you in contempt. Contempt is meaningless, as is shame. Cohn taught that to Trump.

There would not be 67 votes to remove Trump. There will never be 67. It is because of the structure of the GOP. Unless there are fewer than 34 Republicans in the Senate, there will never be enough votes to remove a Republican President. Why, you might ask? Check out the articles about Mitt Romney being hated by the GOP. That hatred keeps the GOP Senators in line. Judging by my two Texas GOP Senators, all the other GOP Senators are cowards, just like Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. The exception is Mitt Romney and even he got butterflies in his stomach when he announced his vote to remove Trump.

Romney gave a speech on why he'll vote to convict Trump.

Sygnym, it was impossible to imagine GOP Senators voting to remove Trump. But a GOP Senator did. It was impossible to imagine GOP Senators voting for witnesses to testify, but two did. It is impossible to imagine that a GOP Chief Justice of the Supreme Court votes to reveal Trump's tax returns, but he might. The Supreme Court Justice might be influenced by Trump's promise to reveal the tax returns after the tax audit is over, if the Justice asks for proof that all Trump returns are still be auditing 4 years after Trump's many promises about his taxes.

It is possible, almost a certainty, that if Trump loses his tax case in the Supreme Court, the IRS will have a mysterious fire that destroys Trump's tax returns. GOP Senators will say it is a shame that the proof Trump is a law abiding citizen was destroyed. The Senate will vote to not have Trump's tax accountants testify.

Your question was poorly worded. It should have been If Obama refused to pay his taxes, would you remove him from office? I certainly would. If Obama ordered a coverup of his operations in Ukraine, would you remove him from office? I certainly would. If Obama threatened Ukraine to get a fake investigation started, would you remove him from office? I certainly would. I'd have all the GOP Senators agreeing with me, too.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Well, I found this scenario not exactly applicable, so I didn't know how to answer.

Not the Ukraine government through official policy, but many high-ranking and wealthy people in it, DID interfere in the 2016 election for example this anti-Trump op-ed by Chaley deputy head of Ukraine's presidential administration and the Ukrainian ambassador to the US https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/international/290411-ukraines-a
mbassador-trumps-comments-send-wrong-message-to
, and the questionable anti-Trump 'black ledger' https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/15/us/politics/what-is-the-black-ledge
r.html
. And there were serious questions about Biden's conflict of interest https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/01/us/politics/biden-son-ukraine.html. Then of course there was Chalupa the DNC contractor who solicited dirt on Trump from Ukraine https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/441892-ukrainian-embassy-confi
rms-dnc-contractor-solicited-trump-dirt-in-2016
. Before that there was the DNC payment through intermediaries for the foreign sourced "golden showers" Steele dossier (that might have been completely fabricated) https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/clinton-campaig
n-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier/2017/10/24/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html
. And before that, there was the now-debunked and totally inaccurate FISA application to surveil Carter Page, as outlined in the Horowitz report, originally filed in 2016 by the Obama administration but denied until 'evidence' was altered https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2018/02/obama-admins-first-request-sp
y-trump-campaign-rejected-fisa-court-added-fake-dossier-knowing-lie
/ .

There's more than enough evidence of anti-Trump Democratic and foreign meddling; and US foreign and domestic intelligence anti-Trump meddling, and foreign intelligence meddling, that was solicited and occurred - yes even by Ukraine and MI6 and privately, in the 2016 election.

And then there's the question of quid pro quo, which I find tenuous.

Not knowing how to interpret the question, I found it hard to answer.
