The IRS got $0 to enforce its crackdown on Russian oligarchs because the GOP blocked the funding.

Enforcement against U.S. billionaires cheating taxes is also down 25% this decade.

So much for "tough on crime." Better not steal gum from a store though.

IRS unit gets no funding to enforce sanctions against Russian oligarchs

The White House request to give the IRS $30 million for tracing financial activities associated with sanctioned people appeared to run afoul of broader reluctance by Republicans to put more money into IRS enforcement actions.

The workforce of the investigations unit has shrunk by 25% over the course of the last decade, according to Treasury.

The unit “is in desperate need of stable, long-term funding to develop a deeper understanding of the global financial landscape and trace and seize assets that today are in the hands of criminals,” Treasury said in a statement last week.

Yeah you just keep talking shit comrade it's what you're good at.

In the meantime. Russia is changing its game plan. They are saying they have accomplished thier goals of de-nazifying Ukraine and destroying its military. They will now concentrate on the Donbas area.

How fucking funny is this shit comrade.

The Curious Case of the Recovering Ruble

One thing Russia has managed to defend quite effectively is the value of its currency. The ruble plunged in the days after the Ukraine invasion, but it has since recovered almost all of its losses. How did that happen, and what does it mean?

Elvira Nabiullina, the governor of Russia’s central bank — a role equivalent to that of Jerome Powell at the Federal Reserve — is especially well regarded by her peers abroad.

Nabiullina and her colleagues pulled out all the stops to defend the ruble. They raised the key interest rate — more or less equivalent to the federal funds rate in the United States — from 9.5 to 20 percent, to induce people to keep their funds in Russia. They also imposed extensive controls to prevent capital flight: Russians have faced restrictions on moving their money into their foreign bank accounts, and foreign investors have been prohibited from exiting Russian stocks, and more.

Russia has imposed severe capital controls, but it has also sacrificed monetary independence, drastically raising interest rates in the face of a looming recession.

My guess is that the value of the ruble has become a crucial target not so much because it’s all important but because it’s so clearly visible.

Suppose that, as seems highly likely, Russia sees a huge surge in inflation and a plunge in gross domestic product in the months ahead. Will Putin’s government admit that these bad things are happening? Quite possibly not. Authoritarian regimes often try to suppress unfavorable economic data. Recently, for example, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, responded to reports of high inflation by sacking the head of his nation’s statistical agency.

Some years ago researchers at M.I.T. created the Billion Prices Project using online price data to specifically track the consistent understatement of inflation by Argentina’s government at the time. The same approach also turned out to be very useful in the United States for the opposite reason — as a way to refute claims by right-wing “inflation truthers” that the Obama administration was cooking the books (it wasn’t).

If Russia’s economy deteriorates as badly as most expect in the near future, it seems all too likely that the nation’s muzzled media will simply deny that anything bad is happening. One thing they couldn’t deny, however, would be a drastically depreciated ruble. So defending the ruble, never mind the real economy, makes sense as a propaganda strategy.

A further thought: Among the people who might not be aware of deteriorating Russian economic conditions, as long as the ruble holds its value, might be Vladimir Putin himself. U.S. intelligence claims that Putin’s military advisers have been afraid to tell him how badly the war is going. Is there any reason to believe that his economic advisers will be any more courageous?

So Russia’s defense of the ruble, while impressive, isn’t a sign that the Putin regime is handling economic policy well. It reflects, instead, an odd choice of priorities, and may actually be a further sign of Russia’s policy dysfunction.

Signym is repeating Kremlin talking points. “We must thank the Europeans for their agricultural sanctions. Well done. Thank you for all your sanctions,” Putin proclaimed on Oct. 21, 2021. First, they believe that sanctions harm the West more than they damage Russia. According to the Russian government’s newspaper, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the EU, U.S., Australia, Norway and Canada lost up to $8.6 billion a year because of the sanctions war. By 2019, the EU alone lost $240 billion from the sanctions war, almost five times more than Russia did, Putin bragged.

The advise giving in 2021: If the U.S. and its allies are serious about confronting Russia, the focus should be on limiting Russia’s ability to earn money from exports — first and foremost, from oil and gas. Sanctions should target Russia’s status and prestige, something Russians care deeply about. Symbolic measures, such as excluding Russia from international sport competitions or cultural events, would do more to harm’s Putin’s domestic popularity than limiting access to technology on target banks. More than anything else, Russia and Russians seek recognition and status. Thus, the West should hit where it really hurts.

Trump claims that Joe Biden strong-armed the Ukrainian government to fire its top prosecutor in order to thwart an investigation into a company tied to his son, Hunter Biden.

But Viktor Shokin was ousted for the opposite reason Trump and his allies claim.

It wasn't because Shokin was investigating a natural gas company tied to Biden's son; it was because Shokin wasn't pursuing corruption among the country's politicians, according to a Ukrainian official and four former American officials who specialized in Ukraine and Europe.

Shokin's inaction prompted international calls for his ouster and ultimately resulted in his removal by Ukraine's parliament.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/10/03/what-really-ha
ppened-when-biden-forced-out-ukraines-top-prosecutor/3785620002
/

6ix, you should know the rest of that story: Without pressure from Joe Biden, European diplomats, the International Monetary Fund and other international organizations, Shokin would not have been fired, said Daria Kaleniuk, co-founder and executive director of the Anti Corruption Action Centre in Kiev.

"Civil society organizations in Ukraine were pressing for his resignation," Kaleniuk said, "but no one would have cared if there had not been voices from outside this country calling on him to go."

In a July phone call, Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate Biden's actions. That prompted a whistleblower to accuse Trump of asking a foreign government to interfere in the 2020 presidential election, which is now the subject of an impeachment inquiry.

I notice that we always get Kremlin "talking points" (propaganda) from SIGGY about 24 hours before they make their way to MSM. Most recent SIGGY spoiler: "Russia is repositioning their troops to focus on the East, which they wanted to do in the first place." Next day I'm hearing that on the news. Timing is telling.

I have faith that the US and EU allies are doing, or are going to do, everything they can to punish Putin.

Quote:

German Retailers To Increase Food Prices By 20-50% On Monday

s-20-50-monday
. Russia is a key exporter of energy and wheat to the world, and a major exporter of strategic metals, fertilizer and other necessities.

Economies simply can't run without gas, oil, and food. The USA will experience price increases bc we will be competing in the world market for basics (and American producers, as SECOND so kindly pointed out, will raise prices accordingly), but the EU is critically dependent on Russia for gas and oil. Interruption will halt production. Another nation critically dependent on Russia is Japan.

Where Biden* shot America in the face is making U$D a risky place to park money. Sanctioning the central bank of a major economy is causing other nations to think twice about keeping U$D assets (necessarily in USA banks) and Russia, China, central Asian nations, and India are working hard to de-dollarize their mutual trade. De-dollarization is not a new phenomenon, but USA sanctions on Russian banks accelerated the trend and brought together a number of nations that wouldn't have otherwise collaborated on a common project by creating a common enemy (us).

The good news is that Putin lost this war, but he would have already won if Trump was President.

Putin paints the war in Ukraine as a proxy war between Russia and the US, but the invasion is a post-imperial land grab and a global problem.

6ix and Signym aren't acknowledging that things would be different in Ukraine if Trump were president.

If Mike Pence had ignored his Hoosier values of truth, justice and the Constitution and cooperated in overturning the election results, Trump could now be president. Donald Trump is right. If he were still president, the situation would be far different in Ukraine.

There would be no danger of armed conflict between Russia and NATO over Ukraine because there would be no NATO. Trump contended throughout his first term that NATO was outdated. He belittled and insulted leaders of European nations in the alliance. He was reluctant to support the collective-defense agreement known as Article 5. By now in a second term, he would have pulled out of the alliance and scuttled it.

There would be no suggestion from a President Trump that Vladimir Putin is a butcher and must go after Russia invaded Ukraine. Trump praised the “genius” of Putin as Russia amassed troops for the invasion. And he wouldn’t let a little thing like Russia seeking to dominate its neighbor ruin his bromance with Putin. Hey, he pulled out of Syria and let Russia dominate there.

There would be no long, heroic stand by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He would have been dead a month ago. Trump holds a grudge. Zelenskyy didn’t announce an investigation of Joe Biden before the election, even when Trump held up needed defensive weapons for Ukraine to force it.

Fervent Trump supporters like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Madison Cawthorn haven’t forgotten. They call Zelenskyy a “thug” and “corrupt.” Trump, if still president, wouldn’t forget and wouldn’t coordinate massive arms shipments and sanctions to save Zelenskyy and thwart friend Putin.

There would be no Ukraine. Without the United States and a unified NATO providing the help to stall the invasion, Russia would have smashed into Kyiv and disposed of Zelenskyy, still with a terrible toll in Ukraine civilian deaths but with less delay against an outgunned Ukrainian military left without needed weapons.

Trump, though no longer president, still speaks out, claiming that he really won re-election and demonstrating how he would be responding to Putin if still in the White House.

Putin would of course be believed if he announced, “Yes, the Bidens accepted millions in bribes along with that thug Zelenskyy to set up a Nazi government and germ warfare labs in Ukraine.”

Well, U.S. intelligence agencies didn’t believe Putin’s claims that troops on Ukraine’s border weren’t going to invade. They wouldn’t believe he had turned truthful now after a life of lies.

But Trump would believe. He famously declared at a meeting with the Russian leader that he believed the word of Putin over findings of his own intelligence agencies.

If Putin did provide dirt helpful for Trump’s election in 2024, it would pretty much cinch that Trump, if president again, would approve Putin’s conquest of Ukraine and signal no concern over Putin’s desire to return other countries, Poland, Hungary and the Baltics, to their status in the old Soviet Union.

That was some really shallow analysis, Signym. Did you recognize that Ukraine would have been conquered by now without Biden as President? Trump has been asking Putin for help being reelected, so I'm sure Trump would have not helped Ukraine fight off Putin.

Russians are well deserving punishment inside Ukraine and back in Russia itself for what their country did to Ukraine, but Signym has refused to admit all Russia's moves are war crimes. Signym needs paperwork. Signym needs all the boxes checked on the forms and proper procedures have certified Putin is a criminal and his Russian army is crudely murdering Ukraine's civilians:

In the woods outside Bucha today we met Maria, 80, who hadn't minded the Russian soldiers so much when they turned up at her house. It was only after they withdrew that she found out they had tied up and executed her neighbours.

De-mining experts going into Irpin told us it would take months, if not years, to clear all the regions the Russians had held around Kyiv. These areas might have been liberated, but not one soldier or civilian we met was celebrating. There was just sorrow, and anger.

https://twitter.com/louiseelisabet/status/1510375300714143747

Signym, Putin's self-described de-Nazification of Ukraine isn't what Putin is actually doing.

Signym, what is wrong with you? Are you touchy about Russians getting monetarily punished for what Putin ordered done to Ukraine? Is that why you are touched in the head?

Fwiw, I think the biggest miscalculation Putin made, is that even before he decided to invade Ukraine and kill women and children, Russia was universally disliked and distrusted. World wide. I think he actually thought people liked him even? Like some some cute Disney talking rat villain. Now? Especially with recent war crimes so obvious? That hatred is DEEP. It's not going away any time soon, certainly not as long as he is alive.

These sanctions are going to last long after they are lifted. Russia will never be the same. Most who will suffer have nothing to do with Putins' decisions yet without sanctions of this magnitude war is the only option left. It may come to that yet. Putin cannot be allowed to march through Europe. There are no winners here. Only those who will suffer because a mad man is running Russia.

EU Preps New Russia Sanctions After Bucha Massacre Which Kremlin Calls Staged "Provocation"

The Kremlin is vehemently rejecting the accusations, calling it a 'staged provocation' for the purpose of triggering more sanctions and drawing the West more into the fight. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, "Yesterday, the current UN SC president, Britain, acting in accordance with its worst traditions, once again refused to give consent to holding a Security Council meeting on Bucha. Today, Russia will demand once again the UN Security Council meet in session to discuss criminal provocations by the Ukrainian military and radicals in that city," according to TASS.

You have never been more crazy, Signym, but this will really drive you so far over the top that you won't be able to see the top from where you are:

RIA Novosti is a Russian state-owned domestic news agency.

Yesterday, RIA Novosti published a lengthy piece titled "What Russia should do with Ukraine", which explains in detail what Russia understands by denazification. It's truly horrific: 1/6

The special operation revealed that not only the political leadership in Ukraine is Nazi, but also the majority of the population. All Ukrainians who have taken up arms must be eliminated - because they are responsible for the genocide of the Russian people. 2/6

Ukrainians disguise their Nazism by calling it a "desire for independence" and a "European way of development". Ukraine doesn't have a Nazi party, a Führer or racial laws, but because of its flexibility, Ukrainian Nazism is far more dangerous to the world than Hitler's Nazism 3/6

Denazification means de-Ukrainianisation. Ukrainians are an artificial anti-Russian construct. They should no longer have a national identity. Denazification of Ukraine also means its inevitable de-Europeanisation. 4/6

Ukraine's political elite must be eliminated as it cannot be re-educated. Ordinary Ukrainians must experience all the horrors of war and absorb the experience as a historical lesson and atonement for their guilt. 5/6

The liberated and denazified territory of the Ukrainian state should no longer be called Ukraine. Denazification should last at least one generation - 25 years. Then the author goes on to detail exactly what needs to be done: https://ria.ru/20220403/ukraina-1781469605.html 6/6

The opinion piece is perfectly congruent with suburbanite Ukrainians being murdered execution style with a bullet in the back of the head by Russian soldiers, so where did you get "not yet happening", Signym? Oh-Oh! You'll say Ukrainians aren't being executed by Russians! Well that makes you a special little expert, Signym. Likewise, Putin says the 4 million Ukrainians who died in Holodomor were not killed by Stalin, but by bad weather. Special little expert Putin could not be confused, could he?

Actually what happened was Britain Called For Russia's Suspension From UN Rights Council. The key quote: "Russia's participation on the Human Rights Council is a farce." - https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-removal-un-rights-council/31785242.html

Why would anyone call Russia a farce? There is a news story about that:

Russian atrocities are nothing new or “You can’t prove anything in Court because we killed all the witnesses!”

Consider the Russian way of war during the past decades, from Afghanistan to Chechnya to Syria. All these wars were characterized by mass casualty attacks against civilians by the Russians, as well as credible allegations of the summary executions of civilians by Russian forces.

In the 1980s, the Soviet Union waged a nine-year war in Afghanistan during which time Human Rights Watch reported, “Over one million Afghan civilians are believed to have been killed … most in aerial bombardments. Tens of thousands have disappeared – many of them the victims of summary executions. …”

Never mind Ukraine. The real atrocities are the shortages of European Luxury Goods in Moscow!

6ix, Russians don't care. Rape as a weapon: huge scale of sexual violence inflicted in Ukraine emerges

Women across Ukraine are grappling with the threat of rape as a weapon of war as growing evidence of sexual violence emerges from areas retaken from retreating Russian forces.

Particularly difficult for many to comprehend is the scale of the sexual violence. As Russian troops have withdrawn from towns and suburbs around the capital in order to refocus the war effort on Ukraine’s east, women and girls have come forward to tell the police, media and human rights organisations of atrocities they have suffered at the hands of Russian soldiers. Gang-rapes, assaults taking place at gunpoint, and rapes committed in front of children are among the grim testimonies collected by investigators.

Rape and sexual assault are considered war crimes and a breach of international humanitarian law, and both Ukraine’s prosecutor general and the international Criminal Court have said they will open investigations into reported sexual violence. But what currently seems like a far-off possibility of justice has done little to assuage Ukrainian women’s fears of what may yet happen in a war that is far from over.

The trauma caused by the use of rape as a military tactic will lead to deep suffering across Ukrainian society for years to come.

“When a woman gets away it looks like she’s safe, she’s far away from the guns and the man who raped her,” said Sasha Kantser, external affairs manager for the Lviv chapter of Feminist Workshop, which has helped hundreds of displaced women and girls since the war broke out.

“But the trauma is a bomb inside her, that follows her. The scale of what is happening now is heartbreaking.”

The days that the Russians left and the day the Ukies took over is separated by two days. A forensic investigator of an uncontaminated crime scene (bodies not moved) would've been definitive.

So why not have a REAL investigation?

Oh BTW, you're too stupid to be disgusting. You're somewhere between amusing and pitiful.

That is NOT what the Pentagon said, Signym.

The story that Zerohedge claimed to say what you said actually said something very different:

WASHINGTON, April 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. military is not in a position to independently confirm Ukrainian accounts of atrocities by Russian forces against civilians in the town of Bucha, but has no reason to dispute the accounts either, a senior U.S. defense official said on Monday.

"We're seeing the same imagery that you are. We have no reason whatsoever to refute the Ukrainian claims about these atrocities -- clearly, deeply, deeply troubling," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The Pentagon can't independently and single handedly confirm that, but we're also not in any position to refute those claims."
