There is strong evidence that the party of the president who nominated federal judges predicts their opinions.

Attempting to contradict strong evidence, a Reagan appointed judge wrote:

“Why does the media insist on identifying the president who appointed the federal judges who make a newsworthy decision? It feeds the misimpression that our courts are just partisan policy arms of the party of the president behind their nomination.”

The interesting thing is that judge presents no evidence and no hint of doubt. His e-mail is what (I think) lawyers call “conclusory”. His honor assumes a fact not in evidence. I don’t want to be rude but he reminds me of Samuel Alito. I think that judges are used to having authority and think that they (unlike lawyers) are free to assume facts not in evidence.

Now comes an intriguing study by a Harvard Law School professor that buttresses my point: If anything, it suggests we have underestimated the impact of party affiliation on judicial outcomes. Alma Cohen, whose training is as an economist, examined 630,000 federal appeals court cases from 1985 to 2020 and found that the impact of party affiliation went far beyond hot-button issues such as guns or abortion.

Rather, she wrote, “the political affiliations of panel judges can help predict outcomes in a broad set of cases that together represent over 90% of circuit court decisions.”

Nazis appeared to find a friendly reception at the Conservative Political Action Conference this year.

Throughout the conference, racist extremists, some of whom had secured official CPAC badges, openly mingled with conference attendees and espoused antisemitic conspiracy theories.

The presence of these individuals has been a persistent issue at CPAC. In previous years, conference organizers have ejected well-known Nazis and white supremacists such as Nick Fuentes.

But this year, racist conspiracy theorists didn’t meet any perceptible resistance at the conference where Donald Trump has been the keynote speaker since 2017.

At the Young Republican mixer Friday evening, a group of Nazis who openly identified as national socialists mingled with mainstream conservative personalities, including some from Turning Point USA, and discussed so-called “race science” and antisemitic conspiracy theories.

One member of the group, Greg Conte, who attended the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, said that his group showed up to talk to the media. He said that the group was prepared to be ejected if CPAC organizers were tipped off, but that never happened.

Another, Ryan Sanchez, who was previously part of the Nazi “Rise Above Movement,” took photos and videos of himself at the conference with an official badge and touted associations with Fuentes.

Other attendees in Sanchez’s company openly used the N-word.

Republicans have often acted like a wrecking ball to shatter American and global security. After WWI, Republicans spurned Wilson’s League of Nations, leaving Europe to deal with an angry and vengeful Germany. Their inward-looking trade policies in the 1920s helped bring on the Great Depression. Though Eisenhower sought peace with the USSR, his CIA caused enduring problems by helping to overthrow legitimate governments in Iran and Guatemala, and by trying and failing to do so in Cuba. When Hungarians revolted against Communist rule in 1956, Ike just watched Soviet tanks run them down.

To weaken Democrats in the 1968 elections, Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger sabotaged a Vietnam peace deal negotiated in Paris. Having won the 1968 and 1972 elections, Nixon kept the war going and expanded it to Cambodia until American forces were compelled to depart Saigon in disgrace. In 1973, Nixon and Kissinger fostered a coup in Chile that replaced a leftist but popular government with a military dictatorship. A few years later, President Ronald Reagan broke U.S. and international law as he backed rebels fighting a leftist regime in Nicaragua.

The Berlin Wall fell during Reagan’s presidency, but he drove a spear into the prospects of containing the nuclear arms race with his “star wars” defense program. If the United States could build a barrier against Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles, the Kremlin would keep working to improve its strategic missiles. Billions of dollars later, there is still no reliable defense against ICBMs, but George W. Bush killed serious arms limitation by withdrawing from the antimissile defense treaty signed by Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev in 1972. This is still an aggravation to U.S.-Russia relations in 2024.

The very worst blow to U.S. security was the “shock and awe” invasion of Iraq by George W. Bush in 2003. Its harmful consequences continue today — more than two decades of dangerous and fruitless American involvement in the unending chaos of the Middle East. Compounding these and other problems, the Bush administration “un-signed” U.S. adherence to the International Criminal Court. Bush also maintained U.S. refusal to align with most of humanity in joining the Law of the Sea, even though this neuters America’s ability to demand that others obey these international accords.

There was some hope for better Middle East relations when the United States and five partners negotiated the Iran nuclear deal in 2015, but this breakthrough was scuttled by Donald Trump, setting the stage for Tehran to become another nuclear-armed threat to world security. Trump also set back hopes for controlling global warming by withdrawing from the Paris climate accords.

Now most GOP politicians follow Trump’s zeal for scrapping the most successful alliance in history and cutting aid to the heroes blocking Russia’s dictator from further assaults on the free world. Reversing Teddy’s maxim, these politicians chatter loudly and carry no stick.

Former President Donald Trump told jokes, discussed policy, and did a brief impression of President Joe Biden Saturday during his rambling 87-minute speech at the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). He also claimed that he opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

“Remember I used to say a long time ago, ‘Don’t go into Iraq. Don’t do it!’” Trump said to the crowd.

The only known instance of Trump directly addressing the question of his support for a potential invasion of Iraq occurred in a September 2002 interview with Howard Stern. Trump responded “Yeah, I guess so,” when asked by Stern whether he supported a possible invasion. “I wish the first time it was done correctly,” he added. Not surprising that in 2024 Trump is a lying sack of shit about a war.

Will technological progress lead to mass unemployment? People have been asking that question for two centuries, and the actual answer has always ended up being no. Technology eliminates some jobs, but it has always generated enough new jobs to offset these losses, and there’s every reason to believe that it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

But progress isn’t painless. Business types and some economists may talk glowingly about the virtues of “creative destruction,” but the process can be devastating, economically and socially, for those who find themselves on the destruction side of the equation. This is especially true when technological change undermines not just individual workers but also whole communities.

This isn’t a hypothetical proposition. It’s a big part of what has happened to rural America.

This process and its effects are laid out in devastating, terrifying and baffling detail in “White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy,” a new book by Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman. I say “devastating” because the hardship of rural Americans is real, “terrifying” because the political backlash to this hardship poses a clear and present danger to our democracy, and “baffling” because at some level I still don’t get the politics.

Technology is the main driver of rural decline, Schaller and Waldman argue. Indeed, American farms produce more than five times as much as they did 75 years ago, but the agricultural work force declined by about two-thirds over the same period, thanks to machinery, improved seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. Coal production has been falling recently, but thanks partly to technologies like mountaintop removal, coal mining as a way of life largely disappeared long ago, with the number of miners falling 80 percent even as production roughly doubled.

The decline of small-town manufacturing is a more complicated story, and imports play a role, but it’s also mainly about technological change that favors metropolitan areas with large numbers of highly educated workers.

Technology, then, has made America as a whole richer, but it has reduced economic opportunities in rural areas. So why don’t rural workers go where the jobs are? Some have. But some cities have become unaffordable, in part because of restrictive zoning — one thing blue states get wrong — while many workers are also reluctant to leave their families and communities.

So shouldn’t we aid these communities? We do. Federal programs — Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and more — are available to all Americans, but are disproportionately financed from taxes paid by affluent urban areas. As a result there are huge de facto transfers of money from rich, urban states like New Jersey to poor, relatively rural states like West Virginia.

While these transfers somewhat mitigate the hardship facing rural America, they don’t restore the sense of dignity that has been lost along with rural jobs. And maybe that loss of dignity explains both white rural rage and why that rage is so misdirected — why it’s pretty clear that this November a majority of rural white Americans will again vote against Joe Biden, who as president has been trying to bring jobs to their communities, and for Donald Trump, a huckster from Queens who offers little other than validation for their resentment.

This feeling of a loss of dignity may be worsened because some rural Americans have long seen themselves as more industrious, more patriotic and maybe even morally superior to the denizens of big cities — an attitude still expressed in cultural artifacts like Jason Aldean’s hit song “Try That in a Small Town.”

In the crudest sense, rural and small-town America is supposed to be filled with hard-working people who adhere to traditional values, not like those degenerate urbanites on welfare, but the economic and social reality doesn’t match this self-image.

Prime working-age men outside metropolitan areas are substantially less likely than their metropolitan counterparts to be employed — not because they’re lazy, but because the jobs just aren’t there. (The gap is much smaller for women, perhaps because the jobs supported by federal aid tend to be female-coded, such as those in health care.)

Quite a few rural states also have high rates of homicide, suicide and births to single mothers — again, not because rural Americans are bad people, but because social disorder is, as the sociologist William Julius Wilson argued long ago about urban problems, what happens when work disappears.

Draw attention to some of these realities and you’ll be accused of being a snooty urban elitist. I’m sure responses to this column will be … interesting.

The result — which at some level I still find hard to understand — is that many white rural voters support politicians who tell them lies they want to hear. It helps explain why the MAGA narrative casts relatively safe cities like New York as crime-ridden hellscapes while rural America is the victim not of technology but of illegal immigrants, wokeness and the deep state.

At this point you’re probably expecting a solution to this ugly political situation. Schaller and Waldman do offer some suggestions. But the truth is that while white rural rage is arguably the single greatest threat facing American democracy, I have no good ideas about how to fight it.

I went to CPAC as an anthropologist to understand Trump’s base - they believe, more than ever, he is a savior

What is happening in the hearts of former President Donald Trump’s supporters?

As an anthropologist who studies peace and conflict, I went to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, to find out. I wanted to better understand the Make America Great Again faithful – and their die-hard support for Trump.

The event began on Feb. 21, 2024, in National Harbor, Maryland, with Steve Bannon’s routine, untrue banter about how President Joe Biden stole the 2020 election, and it peaked with an angry speech from Trump three days later. In between, I sat among the MAGA masses listening to speaker after speaker express outrage about American decline – and their hope for Trump’s reelection.

Everywhere I turned, people wore MAGA regalia – hats, pins, logos and patches, many with Trump’s likeness. I spent breaks in the exhibition hall, which featured a Jan. 6 insurrection-themed pinball machine featuring “Stop the Steal,” “Political Prisoners” and “Babbitt Murder” rally modes and a bus emblazoned with Trump’s face. Admirers scribbled messages on the bus such as, “We have your back” and “You are anointed and appointed by God to be the President.”

Those on the left who dismiss the CPAC as a gathering of MAGA crazies and racists who support a wannabe dictator do not understand that, from this far-right perspective, there are compelling and even urgent reasons to support Trump. Indeed, they believe, as conservative politician Tulsi Gabbard stated in her CPAC speech on Feb. 22, that the left’s claims about Trump’s authoritarianism are “laughable.” This is because CPAC attendees falsely perceive President Joe Biden as the one who is attacking democracy.

Here are my top three takeaways from CPAC about Trump supporters’ current priorities and thinking.

1. There’s a Reagan dinner – but CPAC is Trump’s party

Former President Ronald Reagan runs in CPAC’s DNA. Reagan spoke at the inaugural CPAC in 1974 and went on to speak there a dozen more times.

In 2019, the conservative advocacy group the American Political Union, which hosts CPAC, published a book of Reagan’s speeches with commentary by conservative luminaries. In the preface, Matt Schlapp, the head of the American Political Union, says he often asks himself, “What would Reagan do?”

CPAC’s pomp gala, held Friday, is still called the “Ronald Reagan Dinner.” But Reagan is otherwise hardly mentioned at the conference.

Reagan’s ideas of American exceptionalism have been supplanted by Trump’s populist story of apocalyptic decline. Reagan’s folksy tone, relative moderation and clear quips are long gone, replaced by fury, grievance and mean-spirited barbs.

2. There’s a method to the madness

Many commentators and critics, including groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, view CPAC as a frightening or bizarre gathering of white nationalists who have a nativist agenda.

In 2021, commentators said the CPAC stage was shaped like a famous Nazi design called the Othala Rune, which is a hate symbol. Schlapp denied this claim and said that CPAC supports the Jewish community, but various commentators took note of the uncanny resemblance.

This year, CPAC refused to give press credentials to various media outlets, including The Washington Post, despite the organization’s emphasis on free speech.

Some speakers, including Trump, have been known to regularly voice support for white nationalism and right-wing extremism, including speakers who promote the false idea that there is a plot to replace the white population. I discuss this idea in my 2021 book, “It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US.”

Indeed, the U.S.-Mexico border was a constant topic at this year’s CPAC, which included controversial anti-immigrant speakers such as the head of Spain’s far-right Vox party and a representative of Hungary, whose leader stated at the 2022 CPAC that Europeans should not become “mixed-race.” Hungary will also host a CPAC meeting in April 2024.

Many of the sessions have alarming titles like, “Burning Down the House,” “Does Government Even Matter” and “Going Full Hungarian.” There are right-wing, populist speakers like Bannon and U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Overall, the program is informed by a conservative logic that largely boils down to God, family, tradition, law and order, defense and freedom.

Of these, God looms largest. As a result, CPAC’s hardcore conservative Christian orientation is anti-abortion rights, homophobic and oriented toward traditional family structure and what it considers morality.

Schlapp co-wrote a book in 2022 that warns of the dangers of “evil forces” – what he considers to be progressives, the radical left and American Marxists. Schlapp’s book title even dubs these forces “the desecrators.” Such inflammatory language is frequently used at CPAC, including by Trump during his Saturday speech.

3. Trump believers think he is their savior

CPAC’s love of Trump is shocking to many on the left. But at CPAC, Trump is viewed as America’s savior.

According to his base, Trump delivered on abortion by appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. They believe that, despite evidence of mixed results, Trump had wide successes at securing the border and creating jobs. For example, during Trump’s time as president, the U.S. economy lost nearly 3 million jobs, and apprehensions of undocumented migrants at the border rose.

Trump’s CPAC speech, like his campaign speeches, harped on such supposed achievements – as well as Biden’s alleged “destruction” of the country.

Conservatives roll their eyes at liberal fears of Trump the despot. Like all of us, they acknowledge, Trump has flaws. They say that some of his comments about women and minorities are cringeworthy, but not evidence of an underlying misogyny and hatefulness, as many critics contend.

Ultimately, CPAC conservatives believe Trump is their best bet to defeat the radical-left “desecrators” who seek to thwart him at every turn – including, as they constantly complained at CPAC, social media bans, “fake news” takedowns, rigged voting, bogus lawsuits, unfair justice, and lies about what they call the Jan. 6, 2021, “protest”.

Despite these hurdles, Trump battles on toward the Republican nomination for presidential candidate – the hero who CPAC conservatives view as the last and best hope to save the USA.

White rural rage isn’t about economics

Today Paul Krugman discusses a new book by Paul Waldman and Tom Schaller, White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy. In particular, Krugman agrees that rural areas have hemorrhaged jobs, leaving behind a loss of purpose and dignity:

“This feeling of a loss of dignity may be worsened because some rural Americans have long seen themselves as more industrious, more patriotic and maybe even morally superior to the denizens of big cities.... In the crudest sense, rural and small-town America is supposed to be filled with hard-working people who adhere to traditional values, not like those degenerate urbanites on welfare, but the economic and social reality doesn’t match this self-image. Prime working-age men outside metropolitan areas are substantially less likely than their metropolitan counterparts to be employed — not because they’re lazy, but because the jobs just aren’t there.”

I'm once again prompted to point out that while this is true, it's not that true. For example, here's the share of full-time workers in urban and rural areas:


It's almost identical at every age level for both men and women. In both places, about 80% of men and 65% of women have full-time jobs.

Here's the overall labor force participation rate:


Among prime-age men, the participation rate is about 88% in cities and 85% in the country. The difference is even smaller among women.

Now, pay is considerably less in rural areas: the median income for men is about $52,000 compared to $60,000 in cities. However, when you account for the far lower cost of housing in rural areas, a lot of this difference goes away.

These figures are all from 2016, but I don't imagine they've changed a lot since then. More to the point, however, there's nothing new about this. Urban men earn about 15% more than rural men, but the Fed puts the overall urban/rural wage difference in recent years at about 20-23%:


So how does this compare to 40 years ago? In 1980, according to the Census Bureau, median household income was $19,043 in cities and $15,350 in rural areas. That's a difference of.......24%.


This is a lot of charts and tables to make two simple points. First, the economic difference between urban and rural households isn't as great as people make it out to be, especially when you account for the cost of living. Second, to the extent there really is a difference, it's been around for a long time. City dwellers have always made more money than folks in the country, so this can hardly be the cause of a sudden surge of white rural rage in the Trump era.

So what's really going on? I'd guess that part of the answer is economic, but not at the individual level. Main street shops have gone away. Rural hospitals have shut down. The nearest doctor may be 50 miles away. There's no access to broadband internet.

This kind of slow lifestyle deterioration is unquestionably discouraging, but it's not really the sort of thing that produces rage. That's more likely to come from cultural issues like abortion, immigration, race, gay and trans rights, and so forth. I'm still guessing a bit here, but in the past the cultural difference between urban and rural wasn't quite so stark. Mores were relatively conservative everywhere—in public, at least—and in any case, urban debauchery was a long way away. Today it's only as far away as your TV set, and urban culture overwhelms contemporary TV, especially among cable outlets. That can feel pretty oppressive.

Economically, though, I just don't see it. Rural areas today aren't doing any worse than rural areas have always done. The city is where you once went to make your fortune, and it still is.

Republicans can't stop swallowing Russian propaganda

As recently as February 15, the House Oversight Committee listed as “key evidence” in its impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden an “FBI Form 1023 alleging then-Vice President Joe Biden engaged in a bribery and extortion scheme and ultimately received $5 million from a Burisma executive.” About a week later, that item was scrubbed from the evidence list without comment.

The reason it was scrubbed, of course, is that it turns out the Form 1023 in question was based on information provided by Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested and indicted for lying to federal officials. Now David Weiss, the Trump-appointed special counsel prosecuting Hunter Biden, says that not only was Smirnov lying to the FBI about this, but that his information was provided by individuals “associated with Russian intelligence.”

And what Republicans have not done, at all, is acknowledge in any way that this is a big deal.

To be clear, the president’s son does seem to genuinely be an all-around shady dude, a tax cheat who clearly traded on his father’s name. And equally clearly, the president loves his son, and even though it would have been more politically prudent to completely disavow him and freeze him out years ago, he didn’t want to do that. So it’s understandable that partisan Republicans would be eager to jump on any kind of negative information about Hunter in order to embarrass his dad.

The GOP has been divided on US policy toward Russia, even over the past two years, with a rising Trump-aligned pro-Russia group pitting itself against a traditional McConnell-aligned anti-Russia group. Yet the revelations about Smirnov have generated almost no reaction from either GOP faction, a sure sign that the conservative movement has essentially no antibodies against a takeover by Russia-directed propaganda. Even as traditional Republican Party Atlanticists have been making proclamations about Alexei Navalny’s assassination, there is zero willingness to confront the reality of what’s going on inside their movement.

Right now, the United States is teetering on the brink of a government shutdown because House Republicans can’t bring themselves to write some spending bills that correspond with the bipartisan agreement they already reached with Democrats. House Republicans are also blocking a bipartisan border security bill that the Senate wrote specifically because House Republicans demanded such a bill as a condition for providing aid to Ukraine and Israel. Republicans originally marketed this as a clever plan to damage Joe Biden politically, but it was handled so clumsily that it backfired.

Nevertheless, they’re still blocking both the bill itself and the Ukraine/Israel aid, which bipartisan Senate coalitions have now shown willingness to pass, either with the border bill or without it.

So, aside from obstruction, what have Republicans been doing with their time?

Well, a lot of it has been focused on Hunter Biden. An analysis of the House record provided to Slow Boring shows 70 hours of hearings related to Hunter Biden investigations, and 13 separate bills that include impeachment proceedings related to Hunter’s business activities.

Some of this is partisan opportunism, but a fair amount of it is that they have genuinely gotten their heads stuck up their own asses.

A decade ago, the United States was providing modest amounts of aid to Ukraine, and Republicans in congress were urging the Obama administration to do more. Also at that time, a bipartisan group of legislators was urging the US government to fight corruption in Ukraine by pushing then-President Petro Poroshenko to get rid of the country’s corrupt prosecutor general. America’s European allies also wanted this to happen, and then-VP Joe Biden — a foreign policy guy with deep relationships in Europe — was given the assignment. The prosecutor in question got fired. Then Trump became president with Russian assistance, which caused Democrats to become more anti-Russian and come around to the GOP position that we should provide lethal aid to Ukraine. Trump signed a law to that effect, but then instead of complying with the law or raising substantive policy objections to it, he told the Ukrainian government that they could have the money if, and only if, they collaborated with him in smearing Joe Biden.

The smear that was suggested — which Trump seems to have gotten from Russian propaganda sources — is that Biden got the prosecutor fired not because it was the consensus position of US and allied governments, but because of some bribe to Hunter Biden. Trump got impeached over this, not just because it was illegal, but because Democrats thought they might get Republican cooperation on this topic (it was after all their policy goal that was being subverted), but Republicans decided that protecting Trump was more important, and at the end of the day, Ukraine got the money anyway.

But ever since the 2020 election, Republicans have been pushing full steam ahead with what, as Brian Beutler says, has clearly been a Kremlin-directed conspiracy theory all along:

We know they received warnings from the FBI that their Biden investigations were Russian disinformation targets, and that the false information was flowing from Russian intelligence through Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, into the highest echelons of the GOP. But those warnings would have been superfluous to those who already knew they were working with Russian spies in an effort to frame Biden.

What’s remarkable is that Republicans remained unified on this persecution of Hunter Biden even as they argued with each other about supporting the Ukrainian war effort. The hawks are acting like the entire conservative information ecosystem being flooded with Russian propaganda is somehow unrelated to the disagreement about military aid.

Ross Douthat wrote a smart column recently titled “What The Ukraine Aid Debate Is Really About” outlining the official, respectable arguments for skepticism about the merits of American funding for the Ukrainian war effort. I don’t think we should completely dismiss these arguments. But I do think it’s important to dismiss the idea that this is what the debate is “really about.” If you pay attention to its contours, it’s pretty clear that something else entirely is happening.

Here’s how I would put it.

Look at Tucker Carlson’s recent visit to Russia and follow-up broadcasts, which wound up being not foreign policy commentary at all, but rather generic stuff about how Russia is awesome. It reminded me of leftist takes on Cuba. I generally agree that the US embargo is a bad policy that introduces unnecessary difficulties into our relationships with other Latin American countries at a time when improving ties with the Western Hemisphere should be a priority. At the same time, though, the Cuban government is very oppressive, the economic model is basically a failure, and their vaunted public health statistics are in large part fraudulent. Carlson, by the same token, touted Putin’s credentials as a law and order leader, seemingly without realizing that Russian crime stats are fake.

If you only go to the nice parts of Moscow, I am sure they’re fine. But so are the nice parts of American cities. Moscow also has a per capita income that’s about twice the Russian national average. America doesn’t have any cities like that, because in the US central cities are poorer than nice suburbs, whereas in Europe they tend to be richer. But in relative income terms, this is like going to Marin County and deciding you’re witnessing typical American living standards. Russia also has draconian gun laws that are dramatically stricter than anything Democrats propose.

Carlson also touted the Moscow Metro, which is genuinely wonderful, but was built two generations ago. It’s like crediting Gavin Newsom with the Golden Gate Bridge. What’s more, while the Soviet transit model has a lot of real virtues, these virtues are also on display in Kyiv and Kharkiv and Prague and Warsaw. There’s no need to inject this into a contemporary national security debate. Most egregiously of all, as Fareed Zakaria writes, Carlson praised Russia’s low inflation when even their own government statistics say their inflation rate is higher than America’s. Putin himself is giving speeches this month about the need to do more to fight inflation.

Another sign of the growing clout of Russian propaganda in conservative circles is that neither Marjorie Taylor Greene nor Lara Trump could bring themselves to condemn the murder of Alexei Navalny.

It’s a telling moment because, like falling for bogus Russian crime stats, it has nothing to do with the foreign aid dispute. It is 100 percent possible for an American to see a foreign government do something bad, and say “yes, I agree that was bad” while also not particularly embracing any strong policy response to the bad thing. If, for example, you believe that the US shouldn’t give aid to Ukraine because you’re just stingy, you could say “yes, killing Navalny was bad, but I still don’t think spending the money is worth it.”

And I think that this is an important distinction precisely because reasonable people can always disagree about how much money the United States should spend on helping Ukraine. I think back to the great “defund the police” debate of 2020. There is a of local government in America, and every single one faces fiscal tradeoffs. I’m sure there are places where it would make sense to spend less on police and more on something else. But to have a conversation about municipal budget priorities is totally different than having a conversation with someone who’s been convinced that policing is so useless there’s no tradeoff.

And there is, likewise, a very real difference between not wanting to spend money on Ukraine and deciding Putin is right on the merits about everything.

When actors in your movement are running around talking about Russia’s low rate of inflation, about how their domestic political regime isn’t repressive, and about how they don’t have crime, those are people who have swallowed a foreign government’s propaganda. And when your whole party is moving in concert to launder that government’s intelligence operations into oppo research on your domestic political opponents, then you are part of the problem.

A problem that, unfortunately, isn’t going to stop if Russia seizes Kyiv. There’s a school of thought in Eastern Europe that holds that if Ukraine falls, Lithuania and Poland are inevitably next. That seems a little bit overblown to me. But these kinds of information operations are much cheaper and less risky than actual wars. If Russia continues to succeed on the level of blocking the entire US government, Putin will definitely keep pushing the envelope. Already we have the FSB actively playing a role in spreading anti-semitism around Europe. Putin is already indebted to Iran for helping him out with lots of missiles and to China for being by far his country’s most important ally. These propaganda capabilities are a potent tool that’s going to keep being used in pursuit of causes other than Ukraine and targets bigger than Hunter Biden.

For conservatives who don’t want to see their whole movement dancing on strings pulled in Moscow, it’s long past time to open their eyes and do something.

Immigrants, both legal and otherwise, commit crimes at lower rates than natives. Still, they do commit crimes, and if you force feed your audience hours of news about every crime, they'll naturally think that crime from illegal immigrants is out of control. It's all theater.

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Trumptard attorneys are still trying to disqualify Fani Willis from overseeing her voter fraud case against Donald Trump and others. It won't work, but everyone is paying attention because it's about sex and romantic relationships. In other words, it's all theater.

Up in Washington DC, Trumptards are trying to subpoena the tapes of Robert Hur's interview with Joe Biden. This is not because they expect to discover evidence Hur missed of Biden taking classified documents from the White House. It's because they hope to leak excerpts from the tapes that appear to show Biden stumbling over his answers. More theater.

The impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas? Theater.

The "Biden crime family"? Theater.

Razor wire in the Rio Grande? Theater.

Claiming to support IVF without being willing actually to do anything about it? Theater.

This is really something. Doctors and organizations would be categorically immune to suits for anything related to IVF. They could accidentally cut off your balls or remove your uterus, and it would be tough luck.** Embezzlement? Why not! Credit card fraud? As long as you're overcharging for something related to IVF services, go right ahead.

I am not a lawyer. Maybe there's some principle of law I'm missing here. But that paragraph is basically the entirety of the legislation, and no exceptions are listed.

What's more, even as broad as this language is, it might not even work. The Supreme Court ruling relied on Alabama constitutional law and it's not clear if a mere statute could weaken rights derived from it.

These guys are nuts. And by "these guys" I mean pretty much the entire government of Alabama.

In the wake of Trump’s vow to repeal the ACA if elected, Larry Levitt at the Kaiser Family Foundation outlines the former president’s past and purported future healthcare agenda:

One of Trump’s biggest political failures as president was his inability to persuade Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). However, the Trump administration did make significant changes to the ACA, including repealing the individual mandate penalty, reducing federal funding for consumer assistance (navigators) by 84% and outreach by 90%, and expanding short-term insurance plans that can exclude coverage of preexisting conditions. And, the Trump administration supported an ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit to overturn the ACA.

In one of the stranger policy twists, the Trump administration ended payments to ACA insurers to compensate them for a requirement to provide reduced cost sharing for low-income patients. At the time, Trump said this would cause Obamacare to be “dead” and “gone.” But, insurers responded by increasing premiums, which in turn increased federal premium subsidies and costs to the federal government, likely strengthening the ACA.

In the current campaign, Trump has vowed several times to try again to repeal and replace the ACA, saying he would create a plan with “much better health care.” (Trump is a hardcore liar.)

The United States hasn’t provided any ammunition to Ukraine since late December, shortly after Russia-aligned Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives blocked a vote on further aid.

After finally defeating, at incredible cost in people and equipment, the ammo-starved Ukrainian garrison in the ruins of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine two weeks ago, the Russian army in Ukraine is advancing against other Ukrainian garrisons that also are running out of ammo, thanks to those Republicans in the U.S. House.

The Ukrainian air force apparently aims to use its last few Patriot and NASAMS missiles to deplete the Russian air force and prevent future surges in bombing sorties. The Russian air force meanwhile aims to bomb more Ukrainian garrisons into submission, and help Russian ground troops to gain ground, before the Sukhoi squadrons are exhausted for a want of planes and experienced crews.

One man holds the power to upset this looming aerial impasse: Republican representative Mike Johnson, the speaker of the U.S. House, who alone brings bills to a vote.

The U.S. Senate already has approved $60 billion in fresh aid to Ukraine, aid that surely would include huge consignments of air-defense missiles. Johnson could put that aid to a vote today. Everyone agrees it would pass with a bipartisan majority.
