I just got this info. on how to hear JOSS's call of last Sunday if you missed it and even if you already heard it! ~~ (hear it again, it was pretty shiny).

Here is your chance to get to hear the conversaton between Joss Whedon and the fans at the High Stakes event from last Sunday:

If people weren't able to participate in High Stakes: Whedon Fans for John Kerry and John Edwards or if they did and want to hear a recording of it again, it's now available. Nathan Fillion, Joss Whedon, Alyson Hannigan, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, and more!

Email josscall@highstakes2004.com with your real name, phone number, and email.

You will have to donate $25 (to $2000) to the Kerry campaign to hear the conversation.

You'll get the details when you email the information!

I have more info on the opportunity to hear Joss's call if you missed it!
******************************************************

For those who missed the High Stakes event on October 24th, or who want to be on the joy train again, a recording of the High Stakes 2004: Whedon Fans for John Kerry and John Edwards teleconference is now available. Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and upcoming feature film Serenity, takes a bite out of politics and shares details about his current doings.

Joss spent 40 minutes answering questions from attendees at house parties across the U.S, speaking passionately about the effect of politics on his writing, his desire for regime change, and how Spike is so hot. [really, those are good parts] The recording includes shoutouts from visiting cast members such as Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Amy Acker (Fred), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Alexis Denisov (Wesley), and Nathan Fillion (Our Beloved Captain). Nathan's comments are veeeery interesting!

You can listen to these folks in the comfort of your home as fast as Dawn can invite in Harmony (but it's much safer). You do, however, have to donate a minimum of $25 (or up to $2000). The more money you donate, the more stakes we can afford for fighting Evil.

Simply send an email to Josscall@highstakes2004.com, include your full name, phone number, and email, and you will receive further instructions about how to access the recorded call. Due to U.S. campaign laws, only U.S. citizens and green-card holder residents in the U.S. are eligible. All proceeds go to the Kerry/Edwards campaign.

"You depend on luck, you end up on the drift -- no fuel, no prospects.... beggin' for Alliance make-work. And towed out to the scrap belt. That ain't us. Not ever." -- Mal

Don't depend on luck to win this election. Donate, then listen and enjoy. As Buffy said, Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?

Check www.highstakes2004.com for more information.

I can tell you as someone who HAS heard it, it's very much worth it and you'll love it.

And if you attended the big kahuna party where Joss and Nathan appeared, or any of the others too, this is for you. I read this on Whedonesque:

***********

In addition, Marsia Powers, co-host of the L.A. High Stakes party, is asking those of us who were there, or at the other parties nationwide, to send her our pictures and reports of the events. I already sent her links to the Flickr page and to our High Stakes comments, but I think she'd like to get permission from the photographers themselves in order to post the pics on the HS site: marsia@powersandpowers.com

Bonniet:

Have you ever even seen Firefly? Or are you just a shill for your Mother Party, preying upon our website? It appears the only things you've posted have been (paid?) political advertisements. At the very least, do you promise to go away by Tuesday evening?

Was that brave enough for you? Did it sound like I was making a choice (to belittle your blatant campaigning)?

There you go. My political statement, and you didn't have to donate a Red cent to my least-hated Party (which is a private matter, hello?) to hear it...

Disdainfully,

zoid

P.S.
You should see a doctor about that rash. At the very least, abstain from intimate activity until it clears up, and use prophylactics at all times.

Zoid: I think your post is unreasonably harsh.

Bonniet has been a browncoat considerably longer than you have been, just because there are fewer posts or that those posts have been political doesn't mean that a long time member of this board doesn't have the right to post.

Personally I think it is Joss' involvement, and not the political party being supported, which legitimizes the interest.

We have all been interested to hear Adam Baldwin's views, and I think that Joss Whedon's views would hold just as much general interest to most of us here.

Big fan of Joss , Nathan and the rest, but I'd not send 1$ toward the Kerry/Edwards effort even if it meant getting one of Nathan's Browncoats and a pair of Amy Acker's worn 'unmentionables' in return.

I concur that your post was really unnecessarily critical, maybe even a little mean. Everybody should care about politics, and should be free to discuss those politics.

It seems that Adam Baldwin and Joss Whedon have non parallel political views, and are outspoken about those views, but this doesn't stop them from having a good relationship and working well together, and having civil discussions with each other.

And, looking at the poll numbers, it seems that many members will probably be very interested in hearing Joss' and Nathan's political commentary and in donating money for something they believe in. I am not one of them, but I think it's ok that they be given the opportunity.

Yeah. And that's why there's specific forums at this board for 'Real World Discussions' and 'One Trading Post' (for soliciting monies for your pet projects); although the 'One Trading Post' regulars are actually selling products of their own handicraft, and may give you the stink-eye for posting there, too.

As for me, there was a concerted effort on the General Discussions forum to kick all the political commentary out, because it had become so pervasive and devisive, and we won. I hate political fund-raising and proselytization, regardless the political party. Like religion, I believe it's every person's private matter; there's a time and place for it, and the General Discussions forum ain't it.

Me? I'm following the lead of the Father of our Country, George Washington, who retired after two terms as President -- when the people actually wanted to proclaim him King -- in large part due to the rise of political parties:
Quote:

...They serve to Organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force--to put in the place of the delegated will of the Nation, the will of a party; often a small but artful and enterprizing minority of the Community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public Administration the Mirror of the ill concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the Organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common councils and modefied by mutual interests.

Sound familiar? Those who do not learn from history (not to mention from the geniuses who bled for our freedom and engineered our representative government) are doomed to relive the punishments it so painfully administers, ad infinitum.

Whenever AB, or JW, or NF, or Bonniet speak on politics, it should be done in a different forum. People who are interested in their opinions, so that they can make a more educated choice on Election Day (okay, wait 'til I stop laughing here) know where to go to find those opinions. However, when the object of the post is strictly an attempt to bilk folks out of money for one's favored party, preying upon their fondness for Firefly, then you must get thee behind me Satan. I insist.

They have the right to free speech. I have the right to rip them a new one (metaphorically speaking) if they say it within earshot of me...

Finally, my marching orders, and a basis for action for those who feel -- as I do -- that this forum should be kept clean of the filth of Party Propaganda (whether left or right): a final word from our first President's Farewell Address:
Quote:

...(I) warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party, generally.

This Spirit, unfortunately, is inseperable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human Mind. It exists under different shapes in all Governments, more or less stifled, controuled, or repressed; but in those of the popular form it is seen in its greatest rankness and is truly their worst enemy.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge natural to party dissention, which in different ages & countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. -- (And now the prophetic bit, emphasis zoid's) -- The disorders & miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security & repose in the absolute power of an Individual: and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight)
-- the common & continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise People to discourage and restrain it....

The entire transcript of Washington's address may be found at: http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/farewell/transcript.html
It has much more on the ills of "Party Spirit" than can be reasonably included here, and which seem downright prescient of today's events. I am 'with' Mr. Washington and 'agin' everyone else on this one.

Illuminatively,

zoid

P.S.
Yes, I will be voting on Tuesday, as is my habit. The specifics of who I favor are none of anyone else's business; but, I have yet to vote a 'straight ticket', either, since 1976. I wish somebody would come up with a viable alternative party; having to vote my conscience between 'crap' and 'turd' for the main entree is getting really old.

I'm with Zoid. Not that I mind the political stuff (I just don't usually read it), but that this guy isn't neccessarily a real Browncoat. Why?

He (she?) said:

Now, I'm Canadian. I'd love to hear Joss's two cents (and Amy's, and Denis's, and Nathan's, though I will wonder whether he has taken American citizenship) and it grates that there is no way I will be able to, simply because of where I was born.

In the past, I've made things available to other Browncoats through BitTorrent - things that a lot of Browncoats wanted to see or hear. It was made available to EVERYONE. Why? Because I knew there were people out there who simply had bad luck in not being able to catch things first hand (ComicCon clips, the unaired episodes). I have always encouraged people to show their support for Joss through the (future) purchase of DVDs or movie tickets.

Now I understand that U.S. election laws prevent me from donating to any political party down there, but there is no reason why Bonniet couldn't simply share the audio of the phone call as an mp3 and encourage us, if allowed, to donate to the Democratic party.

I think that's the way a real Browncoat would've done it.

Let me get this straight. Joss Whedon "sells" himself and his TV shows for a democratic party fundraiser. Bonniet spreads the word and is accused of not being a Browncoat?

That seems really harsh.

the only reason Joss did the call was as a fundraiser...
there wasn't any other purpose, it was never meant to be anything else...
except a political fundraising event.

in this Zoid's position is correct: all mention of the event (and the donations) belong in the Real World section because it really wasn't a 'fan' event as such.

Probably after the election there will be audio tapes around for free, frankly I'm a little surprised there aren't any already (I'm sure a lot of people who were on the call recorded it), but I did listen to it...and actually most of the questions were either political or answered with a political spin to it....

I took some notes on the more non-political aspects :
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=18&t=7574
(fairly far down in the thread...)

Note: you'll find that even trying to avoid the most political of the questions/answered there is still a very partisan tone to the notes I took, fact is if you hate to hear an opposing political view then you don't want to listen to Joss' conference call, because it is 100% partisan.
It was his free time he gave to support his candidate, no one was forced to listen....

Umm. I'm kinda Canadian, so dropping $25 for an American polital campaign seems a little... stupid? While Kerry's foreign policy isn't quite so bad as Bush's (did you HEAR what he said about Canadian medicine? Apparently we're a third world country out to poison and kill hapless Americans with our cheapo medicine) he's likely going to be a distancing effect from Canada, and I don't feel inclined to financially support a candidate like that, regardless of the perks.
But he is better than Bush... so go Kerry. Or get a better third party.

Dude, I've been a member of this place for a while. I've been a fan of Firefly since it started. I've been a member of the official Firefly board, where I usually hang out, for nearly two years. I don't hang out here a lot (though I do lurk a lot) because it has proven itself to be not the easiest place for people used to the OB to navigate. Not to mention its overwhelming "friendliness".

When I have news about Joss Whedon directly from the organizers of the event, I would say it is important for all fans to hear about it, wouldn't you say? Especially when he talks about Serenity, as he did in the call. Especially when it's JOSS WHEDON. So I'd say my information about a Joss Whedon event is relevant and important, dong ma?

I don't think you've added much to this event, and it's clear you don't want to participate, so why not just hang up your anger somewhere and let me still encourage people to hear JOSS WHEDON's phone call. He's not asking everyone to like his politics. Certainly not Republicans. But this is Joss, and even many Republicans have enjoyed hearing his phone call, for a small donation.

It's up to you.

There is still time to hear the call. You don't have to like Joss's politics to enjoy it and get a lot of information from it. For more information on how to still HEAR THE CALL, please visit:

www.highstakes2004.com

I thank you, Joss thanks you, and yes even Kerry thanks you.

I see your point but I disagree. Joss Whedon said many things (like about X-Men 3) in this call that were not strictly political.

I wouldn't have cared to hear this phone call at all if I hadn't been a fan of Joss Whedon's. Who wants to hear some guy on the phone talk about politics and his projects? Not me, unless it's JOSS. So, this was for his fans. It wasn't for the world at large who doesn't care who he is. Therefore, it was a fan event. Many fans that were not Democrats have already participated. Yes, it was and still is a fan event, though not strictly 100% *just* a fan event. The main event was a large Hollywood party filled with, you guessed it . . . fans of Joss.

Joss was not originally planning to show up at the party. He only showed up because of the fan response. That is also why Nathan Fillion showed up, and presumably the other actors too. FOR THE FANS, guys. Please be aware they were very happy at the response for this thing.

(And Nathan is Canadian - he couldn't even donate.)

So if you still want to hear it, make sure you get a move on, because this expires Tuesday.

Now, I'm poor - I can't afford to donate $5 to his campaign. So in this situation, I'm being penalized for being poor.

I don't see any real reason not to find this whole thing offensive in general. To Me, to poor people, AND to John Kerry, who I already support whole heartedly, and feel will appreciate my vote a whole hell of a lot more than my $25.

Just my 2 cents worth, which is about all I can spare anyway :P

Hey, I have absolutely no problem with someone spreading the word.

What I have a problem with is that it's only available to a certain group - American citizens with 25 bucks they're willing to put towards the Kerry campaign. This cuts out all Canadian fans, all European fans, all Australian fans, and all fans who don't have 25 bucks to spare right now. To me, this selectivity puts him on the same level as the people who were selling the unaired scripts and episodes on ebay - not necessarily doing something wrong, just obviously not doing their best to spread the Firefly love as far and wide as possible, which is what defines a Browncoat to me.

Okay, so in a roundabout way you're saying your not actually on the payroll of the DNC, paid to lurk on unsuspecting entertainment discussion boards and spread party propaganda. You're just doing it out of the goodness of your heart, even though you got the info "directly from the organizers of the event" (Democratic National Committee, right?).

As far as "friendliness" goes, I 'introduce' my GSD to solicitors who come to my house uninvited. They generally have the sense to peddle their wares elsewhere. The General Discussions board is my home. The rules here are "No political discussions, except where they deal with the Firefly story." All other 'real world' politics belong on "Real World Discussions". Dong ma?

But generally speaking, I just let these things slide unless they get really abusive; like:
Quote:

You do, however, have to donate a minimum of $25 (or up to $2000). The more money you donate, the more stakes we can afford for fighting Evil.

By 'Evil', do you mean the humans who are currently cutting the heads off of other humans in the Middle East? With carving knives? Or are you talking about Chappaquiddick ( http://www.ytedk.com/chappindex.htm)? Or the White Water coverup that featured offing the prosecution's star witness the day before he was set to testify? Or are you just talking about that strain of Evil that's specific to Republicans? Is that the one you're wanting the money to fight?

Look. Just take this over to the "Real World" board where it belongs, and can be duly ignored by people whose sole interest in FFFn is Firefly, not political mudslinging. I know where to get my political information and analysis, and it's not Hollywood ( http://tinyurl.com/56k65).

Oh, and 'nakedandarticulate', anytime you get to feelin' froggish, just jump... Your choice of weapons, pens or swords.

Wearily,

zoid

P.S.
Talk at ya' Wednesday; hopefully, about Firefly.

P.P.S.
It's interesting that no one cared to respond to my second post, or Mr. Washington's take on party fervor.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Wednesday Nov 3rd seems so far away doesn't it? I eagerly await it more so even than Christmas so all of these ruttin' political threads will disappear from the GENERAL FIREFLY area and be stuck in the Real World Discussion area where the belong.

That said, I avoid political discussions like the plague. Make a donation to one candidate or another just to hear Joss speak? Not ruttin' likely. Even if it was a candidate I like, I don't mix my interests w/ politics.

Keep Flyin' Browncoats, and be good to each other.

Thanks, sweetie. That is much appreciated.

As for the suspicions here, I'm not even a Democrat. I am an enthusiastic Joss fan, though, and a Browncoat to the core and I volunteered to pass on information. That is all. Not everyone is willing to take a little guff from folks, as I knew there might be in some of the places this was posted. So I was drafted, being willing.

If this all was put in the wrong place here, well, I'm weak in the areas of decorum and protocol and I am sorry it's where it was deemed improper. Like I said, I'm usually more of a lurker and I've enjoyed this nice place for a long time, even before I formally registered. It's a very beautiful FF fan place, the best. Exceptionally pretty.
I had a Big Damn Announcement, that's all. Where I got it, I can't say, but it is genuine.

To anyone who hasn't, please try to high tail it over to High Stakes 2004, and that is my final pestering in this particularly grotesque election season. Even the jaded I thought that a Joss call would take some of the unpleasantly rougher edges off the political tension everyone has noticed in just about every online forum there is these days.
A sense of humor was meant in the original wording, and if there's them [hwoon dahn] that can't handle the humorous manner of it all, .... they might wanna look to that.

Joss surely meant well with this call, where he did really little but answer submitted fan questions. Lots of his fans are curious about the way he thinks. It was fun. And Joss just wants to save the world, like we all do.

Sorry Canadians, Europeans and others, - though our politics affect you greatly, you can't donate to our politicians. That's just the way things are. Blame our screwy electoral college; I do. In fact, I blame it for everything, including the cancellation of Firefly.

You may want to keep an eye on that site even after the election is over. Just a hint.
