Hi guys, I recently got this off eBay. It's a VHS copy of Serenity but has all the information for the DVD release and a "sample" watermark on the front cover. Wondered if anyone could shed some more light onto this

My Grandfather recorded Matlock off the air onto VHS. VHS is most definitely grandfather technology.

I'm speculating that your Serenity on VHS was sent out to a reviewer writing for a newspaper (do people still read newspapers on paper?) in 2005 and that is why it says SAMPLE on the front and back.

Amazon sells used VHS copies for $5.95 plus $3.99 for shipping. www.amazon.com/Serenity-VHS-Nathan-Fillion/dp/B000BW7R2G/ Amazon even sells new VHS players. That is Amazing, Amazon.

On the inside it has lots of different information (e.g. A marketing budget of £600,000, who it's appealing to, quotes from reviews etc.) I watched a bit of the film this morning and at the part where they are escaping from the heist with reavers in tow it comes up with some information about it only being for promotional purposes and shouldn't be sold. I think it may have been distributed to a video store like blockbuster for advertising.

Like Firefly and VHS, Blockbuster is fading away. It has 51 stores in the USA. At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster consisted of over 9,000 stores. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockbuster_LLC

My first impression was it was a bootleg, but with the additional info, I think you're right about some sort of promotional screener. Are you in the US? The cover art is from the overseas release, IIRC. I think the age ratings are for the UK. Kind of a neat collectible.

I recorded the original FOX broadcasts of Firefly on VHS. Once in a blue moon, I'll dust off the VCR and watch an episode or two or eleven, commercials and all.

Eta: there still are Blockbuster stores? Dang, I figured they were gone completely.

No I hail from England and it works on my VCR. Think all the blockbusters are closed down now, our local store became a kitchen equipment store :(

If I ever get the lucky opportunity to meet any of the serenity crew I'll get them to sign it, maybe they can auction it off at a need hq panel or something

That does explain the cover art, then. I always liked that version over the US release.
It would be cool if you got it signed.

And welcome, by the way.

Was Serenity ever officially released on VHS? That amazon listing doesn't have a graphic, so do you think those could be bootlegs?

The film does have a unique history, being one of the first to be released on HD-DVD and among the last on UMD.

Serenity really was VHS, according to
www.tvrage.com/Firefly/merchandise
and
www.worldcat.org/title/serenity/oclc/62199001 where it is classified under "Human experimentation in medicine Drama" www.worldcat.org/search?q=su%3AHuman+experimentation+in+medicine+Drama
.&qt=hot_subject
as are Lucy (2015) and Young Frankenstein (1974)

Yeah, there was an official VHS release.
I considered buying it to go with my homemade Firefly tapes, but it was only in Fullscreen. And I hate fullscreen.

This video is in full screen :( but I'll let it slide because it's serenity! All I need is the HD DVD copy and I have the film on every physical format it was released on
