The feature article pointed to in the OB thread mentions Mutant Enemy's dissolution as a TV-show production company. But, read between the lines with me a little, here.

To wit: As one who can still remember the tepid 'we're so sorry that Firefly didn't find an audience' hogwash that a F*x TV underling mouthed, the comments of F*x TV actual bigwigs had an unusually complimentary and optimistic ring to it.

I would not be surprised in the least if some sort of corporate reformation and legal loopholing were in the offing sometime soon...

Something to keep in mind is that the Fox network that treated Firefly shabbily and cancelled it is not the same as the 20th Century Fox Studio that produced the show in cooperation with Mutant Enemy. Though they are both under the general umbrella of Rupert Murdoch's gazillions, they are separate entities -- one a studio that has been very supportive of Joss Whedon's work (they also produced Buffy and Angel), the other a network that thought they wanted a Joss Whedon show but didn't understand what that meant and sabotaged the show to the point where it never found an audience. (Yes, I have serious issues with "The Train Job."

I think if that episode had never aired and "Serenity" actually shown first, April 2005 would mark the end of Firefly's third season, not the debut of the movie.)

Anyhow, don't confuse the two Foxes, is all I'm saying.

You are the author contracted to provide the novelization of Serenity, are you not? Welcome, and thank you for your candid response and opinions on F*x TV's (mis)handling of Firefly. I couldn't agree more with your analysis.

I assure you, longtime particpants on this board appreciate the distinction between Fox the Studio and F*x TV. We wholeheartedly support the former (and buy multiple sets of their Firefly DVDs), while we despise the latter for their treatment of ME's properties (and we boycott their primetime lineup, with notable exceptions like Groening's courageous, The Simpsons).

The specific quotes I was referring to -- which sounded much more respectful and conciliatory than the show's cancellation 'explanation' -- were made by F*x TV execs. To wit:

You are miscomprehending. The studio is called, and has been called since 20th Century Pictures and Fox Film Corp. merged in the 1930s, 20th Century Fox. It has television and movie divisions, and Ms. Walden works for the division that produces television shows and sells them to any network that will buy. The broadcast TV network, launched in the 1990s, after Rupert Murdoch bought the studio and its subsidiaries, is called FOX (capitalized like ABC or CBS.)

Just as many of the tv shows Paramount produces do not show on UPN (the "United Paramount Network") there is nothing that says a 20th Century Fox produced show is going to be on FOX, or that the decisions of the one reflect on the decisions of the other.

Joss has quit making tv with ME which Adam says means he must have a lot of confidence in his film career. That suggests that Serenity is gonna be awesome. The reason I posted this was 'cause it got me all hyped hearing how excited Adam was about the movie

yeah I was depressed about Joss closing the doors of Mutant Enemy and saying he is walking away form Television...
I can understand it, but I hadn't even realized how much I was counting on a Joss show (even just a made for TV movie) some time soon...and now there is no chance of that....

But I'm really happy that Adam feels that it is a good sign, that 'Serenity' will be a huge hit and Joss will make many more movies...

but it is still sad about no TV
(of course in a year or three he may change his mind) :(

As a rule, I don't read novelizations of film works. I very rarely read books based on the worlds created in films (think "Star Wars" novels). Only occasionally will I read derivative works based on an original literary masterpiece.

As an illustrative example, Brian Herbert's further explorations of his father's seminal "Dune" novels are in no sense as satisfying as the originals; but, daddy's gone and who else has the will to carry on? The narrative style is wooden and it lacks the pervasive mysticism and intrigue of father Frank's. The original "Dune" trilogy, and all the others that followed (through "Chapterhouse") transformed me, caused me to look beneath the surface and beyond my locality to see the larger course of causality. Brian's prequels are a good enough read, but lack the power of his father's work to transform the reader's consciousness.

Returning from that detour, however, not only will I buy your novelization of Serenity when it becomes available, but I will also be purchasing at least a select few of your earlier works (beginning immediately) as well. I think of it as research, or familiarization; you may think of it as profits, growing your audience, or one of the many benefits of getting your wagon in train with Joss'.
(NB: The window of opportunity is closing: I'm within a month of finishing Neil Gaiman's modest-sized catalogue and must be moving on.)

I know it's difficult to choose amongst your 'children'; but is there one specific novel you're particularly proud of, or one that is quintessentially 'you', which would give the reader the greatest insight into your style and mechanics: a primer on DeCandido? You seem like a brave soul, based on your comments about F*x (TV), but I'll understand if you decline to give us a top-to-bottom list of your favorites of your own work. Just give us a starting point, if you would.

Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to take a reviewer's word for it.

Trusting a critic's appraisal of your work has got to be a fate worse than Reavers...

And that is an easy enough question to answer, especially given your preferences, but even without that factored in:

Dragon Precinct, which is my first non-media-tie-in novel, and of which I am very proud. Like Firefly, it mixes genres, though what it blends is Lord of the Rings-style high fantasy with Law & Order-type police procedural. (Or you could call it Harry Potter meets the 87th Precinct, as Booklist did; or The Sword of Shannara by way of JAG, as Starlog did; or "Dungeons and Dragnet" as the Journal of the Lincoln Heights Literary Society Authors and Editors phrased it.

I can vouch for Keith's talent as a writer. I have now read three of his novels:

- I.K.S. Gorkon: A Good Day to Die
- I.K.S. Gorkon: Honor Bound
- Dragon Precinct

I have never really read too many ST novels, but I have always liked the ones w/ Klingons as the main characters. I saw A Good Day to Die after Keith came her to post and just had to pick it up & check it out.

I could not put the book down. I picked up & breezed through Honor Bound and also picked up Dragon Precinct. It is an excellent book! I am nearly done w/ it and I love the blending of the genres. I would highly recommend it to you.
