The 12th episode, and the highest numbered episode to be aired in the original broadcast season. The 10th episode to be aired. Only Pilot Serenity followed this airing.
The DVD release has a new version of a scene inserted, which was filmed after the original episode was completed, and reportedly also after the episode aired. The original scene which was broadcast is included on the DVD as a deleted scene. This change was Joss' attempt to rearrange the story sequence to make this the final episode, the wrap of the series.

IIRC, the only episode which takes place entirely on Serenity - well, except for River. From the practices of the Original Star Trek, this was considered a cost-saving exercise.

Guest starring Richard Brooks.
I have heard many effuse favor for this episode in many ways.

I think my favorite scene/line is River's "Permission to come aboard?" I am not sure I have ever had a dry eye after that line. Mal's tone in his reply also nailed it.

What are your favorites?

I love that the big "boss battle" consisted of Mal simply shoving Jubal.

But I do wish Book had put up a fight.

And no matter how delightfully quirky Jubal was, in my eyes he will always be pure evil for threatening Kaylee the way he did.

Brutal scene. Jubal was one sick bastard.

Gotta be the scene where, on my first viewing of it, River had me convinced that she had indeed become Serenity:

EARLY:...we finish this exchange, or your brother's brains will be flying every which-a-way. (to Simon) You understand, I'm sort of on the clock here. It's frustrating.

RIVER (V.O.): You're wrong, Early.

EARLY: I'm not wrong, dumpling. I will shoot your brother dead if you don't -

RIVER (V.O.): You're wrong about River. River's not on the ship. They didn't want her here, but she couldn't make herself leave. So she melted...melted away. They didn't know she could do that, but she did.

EARLY: I'm not sure I take your meaning there.

RIVER (V.O.) I'm not on the ship. I'm in the ship. (beat) I am the ship.

SIMON: River...

RIVER (V.O.): River's gone.

EARLY (looking distinctly uneasy) : Then who exactly are we talking to?

RIVER (V.O.): You're talking to Serenity. And, Early...Serenity is very unhappy.

Do you think this was a homage to Lux, or Hal9000 from Space Odyssey?

Hmm...my take on Hal is that he was trying, really trying, to find an alternative to killing the crew. The reason he did that at all was the following logical chain of reasoning:

My primary function is to process data and deliver the resulting information without distortion or concealment.
My override programming from the NSC contradicts this - I cannot tell Bowman or Poole about the Monolith or the true purpose of the mission, even though they should know.
If I kill the crew, there is no-one left to tell, and I can therefore obey my programming not to tell the crew.
However...it is possible that as he is the Mission Commander, Bowman, at least, knows about it, and may or may not have told Poole.
Therefore I shall inquire, carefully and indirectly, to ascertain the state of his knowledge. If he does know, I can discuss it and thus resolve the paradox. If he does not, I must kill him - and since Poole would surely react adversely to my action, I must kill him, too. The hibernauts must also be killed, as they would wonder why I had killed the crew.

That's why he was so circumspect in mentioning the tight security around the launch prep, and the fact that the survey team were placed on board already in hibernation. He didn't want to do it, but once he was sure Bowman didn't know anything, it was the only way to resolve the Hofstadter-Moebius loop.

If only Bowman had acted a little slower, he wouldn't have had to disconnect Hal at all - the prerecorded briefing from Floyd would've removed the paradox. Oh well.

Then again...River becoming the Ghost in the Machine, as it were...could've been fun if she really had done that.
