after reading someone's post calling for "non-political" and "non-election" posts, i thought i would pose this question. while watching out of gas, the flashback where wash is being introduced, there is a part that goes something like this:

wash: "a few modifications. could get some real maneuverability out of this boat. you'd be surprised."
mal: "so you'll take the job, then?"
wash: "might do, might do. think i'm starting to get a feel here."

SOMEWHERE in that exchange, wash looks over in zoe's general direction and there is another shot of her looking kind of digusted (before she leaves the bridge and complains to mal that she does not like wash.). was wash checking her out? did that feed into zoe's distaste for wash in the beginning? is this partly the reason that wash joined the crew? this angle was never really fully explained in the episode. the arrival of the other crewmates (kaylee, jayne, zoe) are rather well fleshed out but wash is still a bit of a mystery. any more thoughts? was he just DYING to fly on a firefly?

I think Wash may have joined Serenity partly because of Zoe and partly because he needed a job. The "might do, might do" may have come from trying not to appear too eager to take the job. He was after all, once fired from a fry cook opportunity. And he had only about six months (or was it a year?) before been on a planet where the primary form of recreation was juggling geese. So maybe he just needed the job.

And the chance to get to know Zoe probably added to the decision.

Hmmm... I just thought of something. Maybe what was bothering Zoe about Wash was that she did like him (or at least found him attractive). After fighting in the war for so long maybe she was afraid to get involved with someone, so she tried to avoid even the slightest chance it might happen. Maybe Wash was the first guy she could she herself with (I really don't think Bester was her type, and Mal is a completely different story).

Just a theory (and only slightly off-topic)

Good question btw!! Feels good to get away from the political sniping .

LOL! I had the feeling, and I could be wrong here, that Wash was the kind of guy who always wished he was cooler...who saw other people leading exciting lives, taking risks, while he was just coasting along...
so when Mal recruited him, I think Wash saw Mal as the kind of guy he was jealous of/wanted to be

and he was intreged by Fireflies....

and then he saw Zoe!

so I never thought it was hard to understand.

I think Joss even confessed that Wash was the 'Joss stand-in' on Firefly (like Xander was on Buffy), the way he was dressed on the TV show certainly seemed to confirm that.
But from the few photos I've seen from 'Serenity' it does look like Wash is becoming MUCH cooler...
I can't wait to see that movie!

and
P.S. Thanks for something to distract from the election post mortems, I would really rather forget politics for ...the next...

i like this idea. makes sense. mal does look pretty cool in his red trench and leather gloves. of course, if wash REALLY wanted to start looking cooler, he might consider wearing something other than hawaiian shirts! the thrill of danger is a recurring theme in so many movies, shows, books and such.

true. i forgot about that. that cuts down on the "cheese" factor. also, as you can see by the headline on my user profile, i love the line from war stories when wash says "i am a large, semi-muscular man." when he is arguing with zoe. if you remember in bushwhacked when the crew is playing their spaced out version of (what appears to be) some sort of vertical hoop basketball, wash is wearing an A-shirt and he looks rather ripped. perhaps he used to be jayne's workout buddy before book came along! bulking up to impress zoe. hahahaha!

I want to give Wash more credit for having a personality before he joined the crew.

He definitely was checking Zoe out-- no doubt about it. And she didn't like it cos she knew he was. He didn't really even make any attempt to be subtle. Put that together with what generally seems to be an understood desire to pilot a firefly and it's kind like handing him the brass ring.

As for Hawaiian shirts, nobody thinks that's cool? I think that is octocool.

I don't really feel like making an entire opinion out of this comment, but remember that Mal mentioned several other people (Many of whom seemed to be well-known, having roguish epithets, so could probably pay better than Mal. You don't get well known by being poor.) who were very interested in getting Wash on thier payroll.
Why did Wash choose Mal's ship over all these prospective employers?

Greetings All,

I agree that Walsh was checking out the ship
and Zoe. His last job was pretty boring if he was
juggling geese. Serenity offered him the best of
all worlds, not too much structure, oppertunity,
a hot, single crewmate of the opposite sex and a
large number of possiblities. Walsh loves to fly
and on Serenity he would be more than on a regular
shipping line. Maybe he heard that Morena would
be there. Would make me eager. Didn't someone
say that as close to the war as Walsh ever got was
a training sqdrn?

He was definetly looking at Zoe. But the way he was going over the console was like a hotrodder looking under the hood of a '57 Chevy or a '64 V8 Mustang with dual carbs. My notion is he really wanted to get his hands on both Serenity and Zoe.

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

I think the "cool" factor is driven by the following for Wash, which all probably have something to do with his joining up:

1) He boasted how a few mods would make Serenity real maneuvarable (meaning he knew that alot of people weren't using 03-K64's and he could "hot rod" this one and strut his stuff)

2) He was hot for Zoe. DUH!

3) Mal had a rep as a war hero for those who were against the Alliance. Wash probably felt that Mal's work ethic and drive would make for a good employer, plus it made Mal appear less seedy than the other rogue-types who couldn't recruit him.

4) Anyone who lets you wear Hawaiian shirts as your "pilot uniform" can't be all that bad. Hell, I'd do about anything if they let me wear hawaiian shirts, sandals and a kilt to work! LOL!

As for Wash being ripped in OoG, figure he is with a Warrior Woman, he had to bulk up just to endure the sex! (Which Zoe probably had a lot of pent up frustrations taken out on Wash! Ref: War Stories, Wash: "It's the guys she never slept with thing") Ow! I hurt just thinking about that.

Where are my Kaylee pics?...ahhhh...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Wash was actually running from the nefarious shadow puppet syndicate! That's right folks, Wash was a member! He got into this yakuza type mafia when he ran afowl of an extraordinarily bad tempered baby gosling juggler, and had to join the SPS to save his own skin. The fry cook job he was fired from was one of their fronts to launder dirty money. Well, things happened and the money laundering building burned down, loosing billions, and he had to make a fast getaway. He heard about this Captain who likes to fly below the radar, and signed on for the long haul to get away. But Bendis was actually a SPS operative, so Wash sabatoged Serenity so that they would land, and happened to find Kaylee, who was looking for a guy, and steered Bendis towards her, knowing that the Captian would figure out he was stupid, kick him off the ship, and hire Kaylee thereby saving Wash's life. And finally, he won Zoe over through mind contol he learned from the shadow puppet syndicate! It all makes perfect sense!

Have you ever been with a warrior woman?

My humble apologies, it was Bester who was working for the SPS, but then talking about Bendis would take up too much time. Let me just say Bendis had his own issues with a troublesome sock puppet syndicate, the antithesis of the shadow puppet syndicate. Think it was coincidence that he was fighting alongside Zoe and Mal? I think not.

est120 and fellow 'coats:

Was Wash checking her out? Did Zoe feel like she was being undressed with his eyes? Did she initially feel like she was being sized up as a meal by a lounge lizard? Did she later discover that -- all appearances aside -- Wash is a lesbian trapped in a semi-muscular man's body, who can conjugate Latin verbs?

No! I say he just liked Serenity's registration number: Papa Uniform Fife Fife Yankee!

Dude, OMG. I almost died when i saw that. <<< warning, this is waaay off topic, if you want to talk about Wash, skip this, if you wan't more kilt talk, keep reading >>>I live in Palm Springs and this weekend was the White Party (basicly the gay-pride party) and Utilikilts was there! I'd never heard of them before and here they go poping up twise (or like 40 times if all the guys i saw wearing them counts) in one day. They're so damn cool. And surprisingly manly. So the moral of the story is "Wear a utilikilt, pick up girls." (really)

Now I have to ask the obvious question (sorry), what do you wear UNDER the kilt?

Call it a 'kilt' (they do in Scotland)... Call it a revolution in personal freedom for men...

Call it a good reason to get the sh*t kicked out of you everywhere you go. Dude, it's a skirt.

In answer to your question, 'neezer: I suspect the guys wearing the kilts at the White Party wore Victoria's Secret underthings; but it's okay, because they were all properly waxed for thongs. (Urgh) The only mental picture more disturbing than that is any guy not wearing underwear, regardless what outerwear he's sporting, because guys are disgusting... And you guys know what I'm talkin' about; so do married women. (Retch*urp*hurrrl)

Which is not to imply that going 'commando' under kilts isn't perfectly normal for Scots. (Although, it does perhaps explain why vanishingly few of the world's finest restaurants are located in Scotland.) (*spew!*)

The canonical question is What is worn under the kilt? because you can then reply Absolutely nothing. It's all in perfect working order.

Another observation was from HRH Princess Anne, remarking of Sir Sean Connery's appearance, that one rarely saw the kilt worn with such brown knees; the socio-political subtleties of this simple statement show the value of an expensive education.

The kilt has resonance this week. The grandfather belonged to Perth, and spent time in the Black Watch. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3985155.stm

Yes, very manly! And as my wife will attest to, they are not restrictive (use your imagination, I shouldn't have to explain that!)

As for what I wear underneath...well...depends on where I am going, and who I am going with. And if it is a really windy day. So the answer is nothing except when I wear something...thus on any given day, you'll never know, unless you look.

Yeah, this is the part where I point out that in my neck of the woods, those of us who wear kilts around here are not small guys. So, people *can* make fun, but they can then realize those are steel toe work boots we are kicking the crud out of them with, and we are not restricted by tight jeans when we do it. :)

In my local LARP (live action role play) I wear a kilt as part of the costume for one of my characters...and to bring us back to Wash, my tie in with that is that my first LARP character wore Hawaiian shirts and though he wasn't a pilot, he rode a street bike really fast. Oh, and he was a vampire. ;) Go Joss!

Think I'll go get that GEEK tatoo on my forehead now.

Then add something to it, and put it back on course, or in a new relevant direction.

Personally I think Wash joined just to get laid, and ended up married. That's the way most guys think...I can get a great job OR I can get a good job and have sex alot, and since will be deep in space and she'll have no where to run, I'll wear her down. Yup. Wash had a plan...and it worked.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think it is safe to say that Zoe, or rather being near her, was the deal breaker for Wash. In OoG, we hear Mal tell Zoe how Wash comes highly recommended and how several potential employers were trying to hire him. Obviously Wash's reputation as a pilot proceeds him and makes him highly sought after.

I wonder too though if Wash was looking for some excitement. He may have thought that a ship captained by a former Independent may provide him w/ ample opportunity to practice his vaunted flying skills.

Nah. It was definitely Zoe.

I'll join the consensus that Zoe was a big factor in Wash's joining Serenity. And I think Embers hit it that Wash wanted to be cooler. But why is he available? Why is he even looking @this gig (he may be intrigued by a Firefly but, this one is just assembling a crew, under a first-time captain), when he's supposed to be in demand as a pilot?

I think it's because he's a jerk, and knows it, thus realizing that he will have difficulty fitting in to any environment of socially skilled people. He's looking for the security of a job from which he won't get fired for being himself.

@least in this show, Joss created circumstances in which it makes sense to keep the jerk around, and put up with him.
