I just thought this might be a good idea for a post. To make a registry of everybody here who became a Firefly fan after the wonderful show got cancelled. 'Cuz that would give us some insight into how much bigger the fanbase is, than what it was when the show was cancelled. And therefore indicate how much more popular the Movie will be, and a new series if one gets made later down the line.

So, I'll start.

1 - PsychichRiver - Became a fan after the show had been cancelled.

I became a fan after the DVDs came out. I didn't even know that the show was out there when it was on the air! I heard Joss mention it in an Angel DVD commentary.

I'm from the UK and had first heard of it's existence when slashdot carried the story of its cancellation. I kept seeing good things written about Firefly so last April I took a chance and bought the DVD, despite knowing virtually nothing about it. I gambled on a series that I'd never even seen a clip of and hit the jackpot.

I'm glad I got to see the episodes in the right order. I can't imagine not seeing Serenity (the episode) first.

(BTW apart from telling us how the fan base has grown, this also gives us an idea about how many we have a chance to convert till September... I hope to get as many as possible.)

Mireilleisis - Add me too.

I knew about the show when it was being aired in the US. But I didn't ACTUALLY get to watch any of it (and therefore become completly devoted), until it was cancelled.

I am from the UK and I was VERY lucky to catch it on Sci Fi Channel.

But she went on about it so much I downloaded the eps and loved it so much I bought the DVD. Now I'm going to the Starfury con in April!

To know that, surely you'll need to compare the number of new fans with the number of old fans!? And counting fans in countries where it hasn't been shown or was shown after it was cancelled in the US is probably gonna skew the maths. For myself, despite being in the UK I was a fan while it was still showing.

I think it was cancelled about the time it was shown in Sci-Fi in the UK? I was a fan since "Train Job" was shown on Sci-Fi UK, think they showed them in the right order here, but I was a teensie bit anti as a long time Joss fan who felt he was in too many projects. Also the number of characters did my simple head in (just from the photos) until I actually saw the show. I'm pretty certain it had been cancelled by the end of the UK showings anyway, I desperately waited for the R1 DVDs.

TRIBES

First heard about the series last April when my son brought the DVD set over. The wife and I watched it that weekend. We loved it. My daughter has also watched the DVD. Should also state my son had watched a friends DVDs before buying his own. I have since bought the DVDs and they are now on loan to a friend.

Since I began to loan the set out, 6 friends from work and two of the wifes friends have watched it.

1 of the only 8 friends watched it alone, out of the other 7
3 wives, 2 girl friends, 1 husband, 1 boy friend and 2 daughters and 2 sons have watched Firefly. None of them have ever heard of the show prior to the DVDs. All said they loved and/or liked it. All said they would like to watch more.

Including myself 23 folks have watched the DVDs since they came out. This does not include a friend and his girlfriend
watching Firefly this weekend.

Still disappointed over the Serenity changed release date. Hope Universal knows what they are doing.

Add me to the list of fans-after-it-was-on-DVD...barely remember hearing friends mention it when it was on F*x, but when I heard it was from "the guy who did Buffy", I just went "uh...yeah, right..." and never bothered to try to see it.

Getting the DVDs from them as an anniversary present converted both me and my husband, and I'm ever so grateful for that wonderful gift! What a wonderful surprise Firefly was, and I can't wait for the movie...(but will, with all the rest of you...)

BROWNCOATGIRL

My son took a chance on the DVD's because it was a Joss series. He got me hooked and his two brothers. I bought an extra set of the DVD's to lend out. So far three other people have not only become fans but purchased their own set and are spreading the word. This isn't counting the fans my sons have recruited.

At Dragon Con this year Adam Baldwin(Jayne) said the opening weekend of the movie will make the difference as to whether this franchise lives or dies.

I plan to give away tickets if I have to! You know like when The Passion was in theaters.

It's a real burden being right so often.

BEENWITHAWARRIORWOMAN

My wife was super excited when the DVD's came out and I had only vague recolections of the show being on air - never really saw it. I watched the DVDs with her and fell in love.

So count me in.

We also own two DVD sets, one for lending and one for use. We have purchased two sets as gifts and our lend-copy has netted at least 5 new devotees - the wife's got the actual numbers on that one. Problem is, the people who have the copy right now (and have for six months) love it so much, they haven't exactly gotten around the giving it back. :)

P.S. - I like the idea of buying up tickets to give out the opening week. Maybe I'll buy up a theatre's worth and make people come see it. Who can turn down a free movie?

KESTRELSEMPAI

I haven't had access to broadcast TV in several years, so I completely missed it the first time around.

A friend showed my boyfriend and I the first DVD when we were over at his place and the show we were going to watch hadn't been returned yet. This was a Friday evening, and the evil friend said we would had to come back next Friday to watch more, since he didn't lend his DVDs out any more.

By Saturday evening, we were racing to Best Buy before they closed to buy our own DVD set to watch. Finished all of them in 3 days.

And now I deal in black market beagles.

MACBAKER

I actually caught a couple of episodes before it was canceled, but didn't become a diehard fan until I bought and watched the box set. Watching the series as Joss envisioned it to be seen made it much easier to understand and enjoy!

If Fox had aired the series from the beginning, with the proper two hour pilot, and kept the episodes in order, I think there would have been far more fans and better ratings from the start.

STANDING ON MY SOAPBOX: "I hate executives (read: those without talent) that second guess and lack confidence in a production they bought (similar to what seems to be happening now over at Universal)! Fox would have caneled M*A*S*H and many other shows that needed time to build a fan base. Shows that are now considered classics! Why do those who lack vision, have so much power in Hollywood? Arrrgh!"

GETTING DOWN OFF OF SOAPBOX: Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.
