FORRESTWOLF

I was listening to Peter Gabriel's "So" for the first time in a long time, and noticed how well "Don't Give up" fits Mal's situation (I suppose it fits any vet's situation when you lose a war). I'll skip one verse that doesn't quite fit, and chop off the end (cause it also doesn't fit), but I wanted to share the rest with all of you. Sure fits how I feel about Mal, the crew of Firefly, and the home that is Serenity.

"In this proud land we grew up strong;
we were wanted all along.
I was taught to fight, taught to win.
I never thought I could fail"

"No fight left or so it seems;
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted.
I've changed my face, I've changed my name,
but no one wants you when you lose."

"Don't give up,
'Cos you have friends.
Don't give up;
you're not beaten yet.
Don't give up;
I know you can make it good."

"Though I saw it all around,
never thought that I could be affected.
Thought that we'd be last to go;
it is so strange the way things turn."

"Don't give up;
you still have us.
Don't give up;
we don't need much of anything.
Don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong"

Didn't Kate Bush sing back-up on that?

It beats the heck out of my contribution:
"Shock the (terrifying space) monkey"

*Bump*, because 'Lish failed to properly hijack this thread, and zoid wishes to give her another shot...

At it.

Kate Bush performed this as a duet with Peter Gabriel. The song is on Gabriel's "So", one of the great albums of all time. Also on the disk are "Sledgehammer", "Big Time", "Red Rain" and "In Your Eyes". Another song on the album, "Mercy Street" was featured in the Angelina Jolie flick, "Life or Something Like It", and is in my last will and testament as the dirge, played while my ashes are scattered into the Gulf of Mexico from a beach in High Island, Texas.

Really Really,

zoid

I did not know there was a "proper" manner in which one hijacked threads. I just assumed that, once I, Mal-licious, responded to a thread, that it was, in fact, then 'jact(sic).

Is this not so? Hmmmm.

I guess I need to somehow turn the flow of the thread towards ME. Now, where is that picture of me kneeling.......

I'm glad others here appreciate the wonders of Peter Gabriel, Zoid. No offense taken at any hijacking - just wanted to share a 'thinking of Firefly' moment :)

As for Red Rain, I think it's one of those songs I could listen to again and again and again...without getting sick of it. Gets me every time.

Now, Sledgehammer's a different story. WAY overplayed.

Forrestwolf:

"So" is a great album, as I said before. I drive an hour to work, an hour home. The CD spends an inordinate amount of time in my car stereo.

I never get tired of any of the songs. The only song I don't particularly care for is the duet with Laurie Anderson, "This Is The Picture".

I first bought the album after watching "Say Anything", with John Cusack and Ione Skye. "In Your Eyes" is featured prominently in the movie. I recognized Gabriel's voice and searched the music stores for the album containing the song. When I found out that it also had the aforementioned "Sledgehammer", "Big Time" and "Red Rain", I purchased it immediately and I've re-purchased it at least 3 times as I wear out the old ones.

There's a modernized version of "Big Time" that gets played in sports broadcasts and venues these days. Which is funny, considering the song's lyrics are a not-very-subtle dig at those who worship fame and fortune. ("...when I show them round my house, to my bed. I had it made like a mountain range, with a snow-white pillow for my big fat head...") The song rocks, 'old school', very Motown, and I love its irreverence.

The way Gabriel built the whole album around African rhythms and "semi-tuned percussion" was not just trendy, artsy or 'socially aware' -- it was effective. Youssou N'dour's vocal lead at the end of "In Your Eyes" haunts the soul.

Musically,

zoid

P.S.
Has anyone else noticed that John Cusack's movies invariably have a kick-ass soundtrack? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he gets it put in his contract that he gets to pick at least some, if not all, the songs on the soundtrack. Call it a sneakin' suspicion...

By a really spooky coincidence, my Mum came to visit today and brought up my "Peter Gabriel - Hammersmith 1978" button badge. I must have seen the guy over 20 times, including funny little places like Aylesbury (Friars?) and I think Bath Sports Centre. Sort of lost touch with music around 1988ish, funny that's when my oldest child was born. But I love "So". And I like Sledgehammer so there.
