Sorry if this is ancient news. I’ve been out of the loop for a while.

Seeing this extract from about.com’s interview with Nathan made my millenium: http://www.craveonline.com/scifi/stories.php?sid=740

I find it a little unbelievable given everything else we've heard, and the fact that it doesn't tell you what he said about it, only saying he hinted at it.

However, if it's true: SWEET!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Most of that has been mentioned before, even though that is a rather recent interview. However, the last line in the article is something I don't think I have read before.
Quote:

“Serenity,” which reunites all nine cast members from the television series, also will feature a few popular recurring characters, and is slated to hit the big screen in September.

Are they talking about recurring characters from the series (Saffron, Badger, Niska?) or is that some new ones that will return in the sequels?

I try not to get my hopes up too high but keep finding myself grasping at straws like this one.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and my hopes high. I would love to see Firefly/Serenity on the small screen again, though I doubt it will be anytime soon.

Don't know about the TV thing, at least for 5 (or 7 or 10) years; nothing in the extended interview intimated an improvement on that outlook... But ya' gotta love Fillion; whadda guy!

Wouldn't it take 7 or so years to make a trilogy though?

GwenHarker:

At the rate they're going, yeah, at least 7 years. But which characters'll be left alive after the 3 movies? (zoid discounts PurpleBelly's Denouement, no offense intended.) Are we only gonna get the Angel version of Firefly?

I'll always mourn the loss of Firefly...

T'was a wrongful and untimely death.

Dismally,

Don't be so glum! I'm sure Joss'll have a heads up about a possible series when our BDM blows everyone out of the water, which would give him enough time to plan how to return to the series. The only character I have doubts about his return ot the small screen would be Book, only as he is an older gentleman.

It's funny, I blame Firefly for the destruction of my two favorite shows (along with the WB..., yet it gives me the joy and happines that I missed while watching the later seasons.

Have a little faith in Joss. God knows I cling to my last bit for him.

Another thing to consider is that, in Hollywood, money doesn't just talk... it shouts. So, if the movie made enough money so that 'Versal could wave a big enough wad of leftover cash in front of Fox, poison pills could be dissolved. Perhaps that is what Nathan was referring to?

One can always hope.

Also, one has to consider that they don't have to sit around and wait for post production to finish on the movies before they can start filming material for a new series.

Ok, so it is a long shot. Personally I'm just thrilled at the prospect of 3 movies being made. I want to see these characters again! And I want to see what happens to them. I'm hoping against hope that the movies will be successful enough for the entire trilogy to be made.

Every interview that Joss has given in the last year has him saying that Firefly WILL NOT be back on TV.

Methinks, Nathan is telling the interviewer what he wants to hear.

Joss doesn't want it back on TV. He wants to make movies. IMO there is no Firefly on TV without Joss and Tim is busy elsewhere.

That being said, it is possible in the far distant future (read 8 to 10 years) that something loosely based on the Firefly verse may be on television again.

I call it a 50 to 1 long shot.

I now leave you all to your random (albeit nice) fantasies.

Not quite true.

Joss said at the SDCC panel discussion, "Now that I've seen it on the big screen, it's hard to imagine it on the smaller screen."

He went on to say that a TV show is not impossible, just that it wasn't in the cards right now.

Joss has made it very clear that Firefly is his greatest love. I can't imagine he'd turn down an opportunity to see it fly again on a weekly basis.

Will there be 3 movies? Or is that just optimistic rumors? I'm hoping there will be 3 movies and I'm all for Firefly returning to the small screen!

I was at the SDCC too. He obviously meant that there would be no Firefly in the near future meaning the next decade.

If he thought there was a chance to get something back on TV anytime soon, would he have basically closed down Mutant Enemy?

I don't think so.

The reality is, he doesn't want to do TV right now.

It seems very likely that there will be three movies. It seems beyond unlikely that Firefly will ever return to the small screen.

I will slightly disagree with tlacook and say that you will -- in all probability -- not see new episodes on TV within say 7 years (perhaps as long as 10 years). There is every probability that you will see yearly (?) rebroadcasts of the original series on SciFi, starting this summer.

As for the movies, the cast is signed on for 3 movies. If "Serenity" does well enough at the box office and DVD sales, it figures Universal would want to reproduce that success. Therefore, it's up to us -- the Browncoats (and Purplebellies) -- to ensure the success of "Serenity".

For my part, I plan on seeing it once on the opening week, and at least twice on the second week, in accordance with The Plan, and as many times thereafter as I can afford (I saw the original Star Wars sixteen times in the theatre).

On each occasion, I will buy an extra seat for the dearly departed LuxLuthor, one of the rabid fans who kept the Firefly dream alive, by meeting with BDMs and organizing guerilla marketing and too many other crucial efforts to reiterate here. Sadly, he passed before the movie could become a reality. We all owe him a debt that can never be repaid; instead, i will remember him, by purchasing a seat and soda (left undrunk in the cupholder) in his honor. On the occasion I take my kids to see Serenity, I may let one of the neighborhood kids come along and 'sit on Lux's lap'; but not drink his soda. I think Lux'd approve of that. I'll supply the little Vandal his own soda...

To close, even if Firefly does return to TV, unless a miracle occurs, it will never be the same Firefly. That beautiful child was killed in the bassinet by the ghouls at F*x (may they all burn in the Hell they so richly deserve)...

Realistically,

zoid
