I was just watching my Angel Season 3 DVD's, when I noticed this in the next to last episode, "Benediction":

Cordelia: (pointing at object Fred's working on) I meant that.

Fred: Oh. Standard issue army surplus geiger counter.

Gunn: We picked it up at a yard sale.

Cordelia: Shiny!

I never noticed this before. Did anyone else?

"How drunk was I last night?"

Yes! I noticed it, although I wasn't sure about the episode. Of course, I only noticed it on the third time watching it (one must watch every season, in order, before watching the most recently released season on DVD).

Well, it's clear what happened. Cordelia must have had a vision of Firefly being cancelled. In order to appreciate the full horror of it, the vision had to show her the whole series, and so she picked up some slang from it.

Sadly, she ascended before her master plan to save it could be unleashed. Heck, evilCordy probably helped hasten its fall!

I do think there is a slightly different meaning here...
on Firefly we find that the word 'shiny' is used to mean 'cool' 'wonderful'
(the same as the way the British say 'brilliant')

but in this case I think Cordy was expressing the fact that
the machine was metalic and shiny...
and that she had no clue what it was used for
and could make no useful comment about it.

As with many things in the Joss-verse, the meaning is deliberately ambiguous and therefore infinitely debatable.

I now feel compelled to quote Giles' analysis of the Dagon Sphere:

Quote:

"It must be paranormal in origin. . ."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, it's. . . so shiny."

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Blue Sun actually had it's predecessor, Blue Circle, a delivery company, in Angel. Also, the hands of blue first appeared in Angel, forensic cops were wearing them, and so was Wesley when he disected a demon.

So it is logical to assume that Wolfram & Hart won, and mankind headed out to the stars and left Earth to the demons behind...or so they thought... ;)

Only if you're not an obsessive insomniac who avoids network television like the plague it is.

Back On Topic - I think I'll make the vague assumption that certain members of the creative team like the word, "shiny," and possibly wanted to see just how far they could push the usage.

for 'certain members of the creative team'
read: Joss
he uses the word a lot in interviews
usually refering to special effects, cool machines, and Spike's hair
