DTUCK

I'm surprised that this hasn't come up yet, so I decided to rise to the occasion.

Come one, come all, and share your New Year's Resolutions, no matter if they'll only last two weeks into the new year, or whether they're backed by the iron will and strength of spirit to last until spring.

*Ahem!* My New Year's Resolution is to pay better attention to my health, and do what's necessary to go further in life (college/steady work)... Oooo! and to play 'EverQuest 2' more often. (yes... I am an Ever-CrackHead)

That actually seems like several resolutions, but I intend to stay adamant.

NEEDLESEYE

I am going to finish more projects that I start and not start projects I'm inclined not to finish.

I will make my life simpler.
I've already began clearing my house of things , that are just things, and really don't add anything to my life. Clarity in one's life path can begin by cleaning one's closet, and boy is mine messy!

I have this nagging eight or nine remaining baby pounds that could really learn to release themselves from my corporeal being. Gonna work on that, and perhaps return to my vegetarian slanted ways. I so miss soba noodles and piles of wasabi paste, I think I could do without the humus though. *shudder*

Oh, I want to get back into painting, it has been too long, and I'm lacking in wall art.

Happy New Year Browncoats!

I never make New Years resolutions anymore. The last one I made was to stop making them, and I kept it.

But then I really dislike New Years anyway.

I resolve to learn at least something musical this year.

Also I will learn some poetry off by heart.

Plus I will limit myself to 2 litres of Pepsi Max per day. I wish I was just kidding.

PV hereby resolves to nominate hisself designated driver on the evening of Dec. 31, 2005. Will drink sodapop and bottled water. Will only take in second-hand smoke (can't be helped, eh?). Will patiently laugh at outrageous behaviour of intoxicated friends.

Will wake up Jan 1, 2006 with unhurt brain. This would be a good thing, compared to present brainstate.

Anyone have the address for the braincell reclamation centre?

I was gonna say, "I resolve not to make resolutions", but that one was already taken (grrr). Instead, I'll give you my real one, that I made on the winter solstice, for the coming year: I resolved to have a more positive outlook and stop worrying so much about the future; stop defeating myself before the battle begins. (Would somebody please get the smelling salts for several of the regulars hereabouts? The thud was audible.)

Dealing with chronic pain (without the aid of pain relievers, thanks to my career) can make a body somewhat cranky, irascible. So, I've decided to reverse that trend. Not necessarily Pangloss-rosy, because that's not me either; but, not so 'doom and gloom' as I've increasingly become in the past four years. The pain is always gonna be there, but I'm taking back the reins of my attitude from it.

And I'm already feeling better -- spiritually and bodily -- over the past nine days...

Here's hoping we all succeed in our quests to become more well-rounded and happier people.

Hopefully,

zoid

P.S.
Winter and Summer solstices are the best days to make lasting changes, in my experience; although it's probably just psychophysiological (i.e., a change in habits made at the same time that days -- and sleep cycles -- are getting longer or shorter). Having said that, perhaps it's no coincidence -- nor merely medievel politics -- that our 'holydays' are located on or near solstices and equinoxes.

I once resolved to make no more resolutions. See how resolutions never stick?

This year I'm going to resolve to enjoy life more, not get hung up on what's wrong, but try to focus on what is right in my life.

This is lame but I resolve to lose 40#'s by my 40th birthday this year. I mentioned this to several friends and I REALLY thought they'd all say "Oh you don't need to lose THAT much" but instead they all said " Great, good for you!'

Noocyte:

That's a pretty good resolution, as long as your refesh rate is at least 75 Hz. Otherwise you should resolve to get a better monitor/video adapter to cut down on flicker-induced eyestrain. Leaving your monitor set at the Windows-default 60 Hz refresh rate can lead to permanent vision impairment.

That's right: Just like Mama always said, "If you don't change, you'll go blind"...

Here's a great weight-reduction tip: Start by losing your friends. Sounds like they're a bunch of dead weight you could live without.

I mean, who needs honest friends anyhow? That's what you've got a mother-in-law for...

Resolving to thank you heartily, Zoid! I'd been unaware of the refresh rate issue. Over the last few months, I've dramatically increased my time reading news, etc. (cf. my ages-ago "Fact checking for poli threads" thread [which I'd link here, if I did not lack the savvy I now resolve to acquire]). I've also become aware of a bit more difficulty focussing at close range. I'd attributed this to age (and the jury is still out, alas, on that one!). Upon reading your reply, however, I adjusted the refresh rate to 75 Hz, and already note a "smoother" viewing experience (a stopgap; I've begin pricing new monitors; the Viewsonic VP912B is looking shiny).

In short, I have summarily hijacked this thread to raise a glass of Jameson's 1780 to Zoid, for taking a load off my glazzies!

Keep flyin' (second star from the right and straight on till Spetember!!)!

Noocyte:

Glad you found the advice useful. Here's another slice: Look into the SCEPTRE X9g-Komodo-II 19-Inch LCD Monitor with Speakers, as on sale at BestBuyPlasma ( http://tinyurl.com/6788k) for $399, rather than c. $575 for the Viewsonic 19" you mentioned. Analog inputs allow you to access boot video for changes to BIOS and to enter Windows in safe mode, in order to set the graphics adapter (video card) to a mode the monitor can handle.

Now the tricky part: If you don't have a graphics adapter with a DVI (digital video interface) output, you'll only be able to run a 'digital' LCD if it also has an analog input; both of these monitors have both, so no prob there. But if your video card doesn't have a DVI out (typically right next to the standard 15-pin VGA, but thinner, rectangular and with white-colored pin guides) then you won't get the full benefit from these monitors. If you need a new video card w/DVI, you can get one at a reasonable price (try pricegrabber.com).

Response times for the Viewsonic and Sceptre are comparable; but the Sceptre's 700:1 contrast ratio is superior by a considerable margin to the Viewsonic's 450:1, which would be considered low by current standards for a 17" LCD, let alone a 19".

If you insist on the Viewsonic name, you might want to be sure you're buying this year's model, rather than one which may be a couple of years old, and still selling at last year's inflated prices. Sometimes you can get this year's model -- with this year's improved features -- for less money than an older model of similar manufacture.

I bought my Sceptre X9 in August 04 and it does everything my card will allow: gaming, video playback, the works. No 'ghosting' in games like Prince of Persia; no 'shredding' in video playback across the gamut of codecs. I highly recommend it, at a fraction of the cost of a Viewsonic.

Comparatively,

zoid

P.S.
Although I bought mine online, my local Sam's Club have got Sceptre X9's on the shelf now, for less than $400.

btw, what kind of poetry are you looking to memorize? One of my favorite authors is Peter McWilliams, he was good at stating the simple truths. Here's a sample : Saying goodnight you leave,

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have made the resolution to take more of an active role in my community. It troubles me how very infrequently any of our neighbors talk or interact w/ one another. Other than the occasional wave when you see each other out in the driveway, no one really talks.

No don't get me wrong, I am not talking about going all Mr Rogers on people, just make a real effort to get to know my neighbors and lend a helping hand when needed.
