They both fought on the side of the Independents, and apparently they fought together at times. Now it looks like they both went on to get their own cargo ships to keep flying and stay free. :)

.....and as Zoid pointed out, they are husbands in law (like that Zoid, it has a ring to it) as they were both married to YoSafBridg albeit shortly.

I believe they're supposed to be cousins, though it's never actually stated. In the script his full name is Monty Reynolds.

Where's the script you're reading? I just looked at the shooting script at http://twiztv.com/scripts/firefly/season1/firefly-114.htm and it only shows 'Monty'; doesn't say anything about 'Reynolds' except in reference to Mal.

Additionally, when Mal gets back aboard Serenity, Kaylee's and Zoe's comments make it dubious that they are in any way related by blood. 'Old war buddies', as YoSafBridge put it. If they'd been brothers or cousins, some of the dialogue would have to have been different.

I think this is a hoax that somebody posted on parts of this board without confirmation...

Afraid I haven't got the link to the script I read in my history any more, but it definately said Reynolds.
I reckon it was probably written as his cousin in an early draft but then changed later as it wouldn't have made sense.

IMDB also lists him as Monty Reynolds, which almost certainly disproves their relation
