Sci Fi Wire is reporting renewal of Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica. Here's the link:

SCI FI Renews Galactica

SCI FI Channel has ordered a second season of its hit series Battlestar Galactica, which has aired five episodes of its first season of 13 episodes. Details of the renewal—including which cast members will return, how many episodes will be produced and when the second season will commence—were still being worked out at press time.

Battlestar Galactica has been a ratings winner for SCI FI since its Jan. 14 premiere. The latest episode, Feb. 4's "You Can't Go Home Again," scored the show's best ratings yet, with 3.2 million viewers.

For the show's second season, creator and executive producer Ronald D. Moore previously told SCI FI Wire that he has already been working on as many as six new scripts to resolve the multiple cliffhangers that will end season one. Moore added that he wants to delve deeper into the show's religious themes and open up the Cylon world a bit more in the coming season. Moore continues to post his thoughts on a personal blog on SCIFI.COM. Battlestar Galactica airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, part of the channel's SCI FI Fridays lineup.

SO SAY WE ALL!

Shiny news. I really like the series so far. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

That's great news!

I followed the series on Sky One and wasn't disappointed! It's a brilliant show!

It'll be interesting to see how they deal with the aftermath of the series finale. It was unbelievable! (It's still fresh in my mind while I'm typing this.)

Great to hear that they'll explore the Cylon world a little more in season two.

Thanks for sharing!

Are we to understand that you were never fond of the stupid robot dog, Muffet?

I LOVE this version of BSG. Totally love it. I've abandoned all other Friday night pursuits (prepaid season tickets be damned if the game is up against BSG - I cannot wait for a VCR version the next day but must see it NOW!!!!!) and skip blinking for an hour.

Starbuck kicks ass. I love this girl. Dirk Benedict was a pretty boy, but never believable as an ace pilot with killer instinct. This Starbuck rocks.

I have to say when I saw Boxy in the pilot I was terrified that were going to have him and Muffet on the show. I rolled my eyes and let out an audible groan which elicited a laugh from my wife.

Thankfully we have not seen them in the series (knock on wood). Hopefully we won't either.

Is "So say we all" the new "By your command?"

We have seen Boxy actually, he showed up in the prison break episode as Starbuck's "sidekick" when she was doing the pilots' briefing. Which is cool; he's actually entertaining instead of irritating. Cute without being cutesy.

Also got a kick out of his "what are you, stupid?" look at Tighe.

However did you guess? It wasn't so much the dog as the combination of the two. Between Boxey saying "Come here Muffy! Darn you Daggit!" and Muffet saving the ship or the warriors or some such…

Short answer: Yeah!

Is it just me, or has the week slowed down considerably in anticipation of the new BSG? And does this remind any one else of another time when we anxiously awaited Friday night? Should I be concerned?

Well, no, not with a killer instinct, but then the original version wasn't exactly geared that way either. I can totally see Our Girl and Zoe having a quiet drink that just might end up in a brawl because Starbuck said something Zoe took exception to. And we all know this wouldn't be any girl fight either, right?

Spoken like one who is still pure and unjaded with no experience with the heinous paranoia that comes with enjoying quality programming only to have it snatched cruelly away. Either that, or you've successfully dealt with your anger a lot better than some of us - me being one. I'm glad to see there's someone out there who isn't fearful that BSG will suffer the same fate as Firefly, or the eventual fate of FarScape. I mean once Sci-fi comes to it's senses or looks at their profit margin and says, "OKAY! We've spent the entire budget on BSG - axe that puppy!" The fleet will be obliterated by the Almighty Network. Who needs Cylons?

Did I mention I was jaded?

I've said it before on other threads regarding this incarnation of BSG, but it bears repeating, so here goes: the new Battlestar Galactica is the second best science fiction TV series of all time. We all know what #1 is, don't we? And that's not just stubborness or loyalty on my part, either. Firefly kicks everything else's a$$. But, I'm not gonna hold that against BSG. It's a very good show, and deserving of renewal.

BSG and FF are two sides of the same coin: Firefly was/is more intimate, warm and earthy; Battlestar is more serious, institutional and crisis-based, and lacks the unforced humor of FF. BSG is kinda like the Purplebellies' view of intergalactic conflict. But that doesn't mean they can't coexist in our hearts.

If there is a God (and I believe there is), and He listens to and answers prayers, somehow Firefly will wind up back on TV. SciFi Fridays with Firefly and Galactica (sans any Stargate variant stinking up the joint) would totally rock. Unfortunately, there's only so much God can do without making Himself too obvious and ruining that whole 'free will' thing. Getting FF away from F*x would certainly require a major rearrangement of 'Reality', as we perceive it...

Fanatically,

zoid

P.S.
Y'all do know that Captain Apollo (Jamie Bamber) is a Brit, right? He does an amazing job with the 'speaking American' thing, wouldn't you agree?

P.P.S.
Given my above analysis, I believe it should now be possible to combine the two series in a fanfic. Any takers?

Networks don't listen to God, zoid. And God listens to all prayers, you know. He answers them all too. The thing is, be very very VERY careful what you pray for, because A) He doesn't always give you the answer you're looking for and B) He's got one doozie of a sense of humor.

Hmmm... Maybe I misinterpreted your, "Should I be concerned?" in the previous post; but I was trying to allay your concern that BSG might sap FF's ranks. In which case, what did you mean by 'should I be concerned'?

Quote:

I believe God's Will will be done, regardless who's listening or not. There's a plan for everything, whether we like the results or not. Still, I do pray for Firefly's return, if for no other reason than to let Him know that I care, and that I recognize a certain loss of beauty is increasingly manifesting itself in His Creation (and would He please put a halt to it).

Who knows? Maybe Firefly had to die (on TV), in order that BSG would be given a proper shot by its network? Perhaps the loss of our beloved series will -- in the end -- prove to be the harbinger of the death of 'Reality TV' and a turn to TV entertainment of unprecedented quality? I don't think there's any doubt that Firefly's continuing and growing international fanbase is a prime market force driving BSG's success, and that Vivendi-Universal (owners of Firefly-based movies and the SciFi network) are cognizant and responsive to that fact.

Maybe BSG is the best answer to prayer we can expect, short of rewinding Time and reordering events. But, I'm still praying for that Firefly miracle, even if I don't think a positive response is likely...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
Vivendi-Universal also have a kick-ass electronic gaming division. So, while I'm praying, how about a really good FF RPG for PC? I'll even accept a MMORPG for XBox Live, although that'll mean my boy never gets his system back...

P.P.S.
Channain: Not gonna touch the BSG-FF crossover fanfic idea? I'd love to collaborate on it.

zoid, you are a true flan, you know that? If BSG saps some of FF's ranks, then they were never FF fans to begin with and should be left to go on down their own dark and dreary path.

I was actually just joshing a bit about BSG being on Friday nights, the same night that Firefly was on--the SAME NIGHT that brought Firefly to its untimely end on network television. My concern was for the coincidence of the day of the week. The longer BSG stays on, the longer I can have my need for quality science fiction satisfied - and yet quality science fiction and network television have never really cohabitated all that successfully. The original BSG suffered heinously for it back in the day.

And if God's Will is to make us suffer long and hard before it comes back…? I hope for Firefly's return, but I wouldn't say it's on my prayer list--actually my prayer list is pretty crowded these days. Somehow, I don't think God is making television a priority. If He was, then Firefly would still be on, wouldn't it?

Now you've got to be kidding. SciFi and other networks are cognizant and responsive to only one thing - the Almighty Dollar, who is their god, their guide, their savior. I like the notion, but my faith walks a different path. Should Firefly return, then I will be one of the happiest browncoats in the 'verse. Should it not… well, it's going to return so there's really no other consideration, is there?

Now I know you've seen what happens when folks try to rewind and reorder things. Short of Dr. Who, chances are, it generally only prolongs the inevitable or just make matters worse. We might even end up with a 'verse that had no Firefly at all. I shudder to even think of such a thing.

I don't believe I said I wouldn't touch it. These things need rumination. If I did anything with it, it would just be a short story of some manner, that's all. Then again, I said Heartbroken (my first fan fic) would be only four parts back when I started it and now it's nine. Odd how that happens.

And collaboration would be mighty appreciated.

I must admit that I haven't been following BSG, although I watched the miniseries. Of course, in a parallel world, the Sci Fi channel would have picked up Firefly and decided not to go with BSG but there we go.

If you ever feel that perhaps this board or indeed any sci-fi board goes a bit over the top when it is pro or con a topic, you might like to bear this example in mind of what happens when someone really, really hates a series:

Hey Veteran

Well, we had the blond bombshell, Number 6 (whose virtual wardrobe seems to be diminishing by the episode), we have Boomer, we also had the presidential liaison... or was he the tour guide? The one in the purple suit in the pilot. Frak! Now I need to go look up who that was.

Anyhoo, all I'm saying is that the Cylons have shown a high margin of patience and due diligence, and have probably been infiltrating the Colonies for a long long long long time. And then this kid shows up out of nowhere during the evacuation? Pretty strange.

In my little corner of the 'verse, SciFi would live up to its name and have all science FICTION. They'd give up the so-called reality or shock TV they're doing now and have not only Firefly and BSG, but John Doe as well. They'd still be showing FarScape, the Invisible Man and The Chronicle and they would be the ones to bring us the new Dr. Who - for better or for worse. They'd spend more time and more money on their miniseries and make them live up to the novels they were based on. They could even revive the old serial format of days gone by. IF I were running SciFi, that's what it would look like.

EOR (End of Rant) I think I need to put all that into a blog...

We seem to be agreeing here, 'though it doesn't particularly have that tone. When I said "prime market force", I meant a TV show flushed down the tubes over two years ago that is still generating Almighty Dollars and building new business in the form of movies and new converts purchasing DVDs. That's pretty remarkable, and I do believe that VU are aware of Firefly's strong performance.

This is all fascinating. I also believe that VU have understood the power of the Internet in FF's continuing success. They are really going out of their way to curry online support for BSG, by advertising their 'insider comments' on each show via AOL. This strong attempt to curry the online community's favor and encourage fan interaction may be a result of the Firefly (et al) fansites phenomenon. Chicken or egg, it's indisputably a good way to grow a show's fanbase.

Unfortunately for me, they're doing it with AOL, which I consider to be a virus. I wouldn't mind hearing the "commentary on tonight's show"; but I ain't goin' anywhere near Plug-in City...

It is pretty darn remarkable indeed - VU is probably saying right now "Hmmm... Boy, Fox really dropped the ball on that one, huh? Isn't that just too bad? *maniacal laugh*"

Anyway - yes, somewhere in all of this, I think you and I are complete in agreement.

If the word "orgasmic" offends you at all, let me know, will you? I can't think of any other word to describe that particular level of satisfaction.

Scary.

Ah, yes, the scary amusement that is Languatron and his crusade against the reimagined BSG. Can you just imagine if people like that put a fraction of that energy into something important like, oh, curing cancer?

OMG.

I just spent a few minutes looking at Languatron's "message board", if it can be called that honestly. That is absolutely hilarious. Does he not allow others to post or what? Or, I wonder, is everyone else like me unable to bring themselves to post on such a hilarious crock. I would've amused myself my reading more of the rants but I'd feel bad about supporting his advertising.

Anybody know the backstory on this Languatron? His daddy was a grip on the original and he's got a grudge against his childhood heroes being re-invented? Funny, funny, sad, pitiful stuff...
