I watched this myself the other day, but had to watch it again with the newly firefly-converted flatmate. It's like someone's hit him with a vat of St Tropez! Especially in the part just as they go into the clean room in area 51.

It wasn't as bad a film as everyone (at least, everyone around me) harps on that it was, it made a killing at the box office if I remember and I thought it was good when I was about 12, although the stereotypes of other armies around the world really pissed me off because it was just so stereotypical and kind of insulted the audience.

Still, I thought he was good in this even if there was no way to get a gratuitous topless shot!

By jove, you`re right, I hadn`t made the connection before although he did look familiar in Firefly - and he was a crack shot in ID4 too.

Definitely, ID4 was the sort of movie where you exchange your brain for a little U.S.A. flag that you wave all throughout. Despite that, I had a good time with the film - saw it on opening day and the crowd chemistry was REALLY something. Back then, the creepy uber-patriotism thing was easy enough to avoid, so stepping in it for an afternoon was not so bad.

I agree AB did a good job in the movie.

Ok, corny? Sure. but pissed you off? Gee, that's taking things a bit much, imo. Not to take sides here, but if you've got a quick scene to convey to the audience that armies from around the world are indeed trying to work together, how might one go about showing very legitmate differences w/ out being 'stereo typical'? Give credit for them not going AIRPLANE on them and showing the Israelie jets w/ large beards and wearing yamakas, etc....

Yeah, AB was a dead eye shot back then too....that's our BDH!

Well pissed off may be a little strong. Annoyed maybe.....

Actually the israli bit was cut from the version released in the gulf states (or it wasn't in the one that I saw when it was released.) but there are ways to show that you are coordinating a world attack. without having people saying "Oh jolly good show- the yanks want to kill the aliens what! Tally-ho!" Why on earth did they show the british army in Iraq anyway? Would it not have made more sense to have a bunch of camoflagued folk in the ruins of London (budget? what budget? ;))

His was probably the only good acting in ID4. That movie sucked.

The novelization handled it better; turns out the Brits were there as part of some war or another, helping out the (insert Middle-Eastern faction A) against (insert Middle-Eastern faction B). (Who bothers to keep track anymore?) When the war went down, the British forces were the ones who hauled both sides together and whipped them into working together.

There was a really funny scene that I can't remember enough of to quote exactly, but the novel shows the Brit general entering the (faction A) tent with the (faction B) commander behind him, carrying a rifle. The Brit cracks a joke (introducing the "enemy" as his lawyer), which one of the faction-A guys turns into another joke (he brought his fountain pen), then the faction-B guy joins in (he picked it up at their home office).

Hey, i think we all agree that Jayne Cobb is the role that AB was born for. And I know that I may be preaching to the choir here, because everyone I know has seen FMJ, but on the odd chance that anyone out there has NOT seen Stankey Kubrick's "FULL METAL JACKET" Adam Baldwin is one of the great movie badasses as the character Animal Mother. The scene with the sniper where he just charges in with that M-60 blazing gives me chills every time. Probably because I was a machine guner myself a while ago, but that's another story...

And Melkor fled before the laughter of Tulkas, and hated him ever after

I must admit, with a certain amount of shame, I've not seen "Full Metal Jacket" before... nor have I seen "Platoon" or "Saving Private Ryan" or any of the other big time War movies...

I know, I should be flogged...

Don't flog yourself! Vincent D'NoFrio (I know I butchered his name) was also in FMJ, and he was excellent, too.

I think Adam was at his personal best in FMJ and My Bodyguard. ID4 was certainly nice! Well, all his movies are nice! Next of Kin, whooooeeeee!

Also true - but poor Vince, the role of his that sticks in my head is "Edgar" in "Men in Black". Every time he shows up on Law & Order: CI either my wife or I will say "I know Egger, and that wudn't Egger." Similarly, Adam Baldwin will always be Jayne to me, no matter what other roles he plays. I mean no insult to either of these actors - they did a great job.

Wasn't he just perfect in Men In Black??

Whenever I see Vinny, I picture him saying "I am living in a world of sh!t..." But that was FMJ again, he just really sticks out in my mind in that movie!

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Obviously, neither of you folks has seen "Salton Sea", and I wouldn't recommend it to the squeemish. Watch Vincent D'Onofrio in "Strange Days", "the Winner", "13th Floor" or "the Cell".

That probably disqualifies me, then. What kind of squeamish do you mean? Is there a lot of violence? To gauge my faintheartedness, how's this - I was able to watch "Reservoir Dogs", and thought it was a good movie, but there's no way I could sit through it again.

And even if I did see Salton Sea I bet Vince would still be Egger. :)

A little pigeon shooting, but I'd forgotten that 'til starting this reply. The violence is foreshadowed, described, implied, or off-screen.

Good gauge -- just realized I could delete a couple of paragraphs of detail.

Reservoir Dogs affected me the same way; it ain't worth going through the non-interrogation scene again. Salton Sea has a scene that gross (entirely because of Vinnie's dialogue), & a later shot of V D' that I can't get out of my head. I wouldn't say it was as good a movie.

LOL - at first I didn't notice the apostrophe after the D... you'll never believe the image that brought up! That'd definitely not be for the squeamish. hee hee
