You'd think that some of the crew like to jam out on tunes once in a while. Ya know, listening to some angst-ridden, future punk band from their era who sing about how much the Alliance sucks. Or comparing The Rolling Stones to REO Speedwagon.

I meant "Why", not "Whey". My bad, I'm tired.

Maybe the Captain thinks playing music on the ship is too frou-frou.
I can hear him say, "This ain't no cruise ship people." :D

I also remind about Kaylee listening to music.

Remember, what we see on the show only covers a very small amount of what goes on on Serenity. They could very well be listening to music quite a bit, but we just don't see it since it isn't crucial to the plot.

I like to think they listen to music now and then, but then I'm very music-oriented. :)

good question. I think'd they'd be listening, especially when Wash is at the wheel by himself, or when Jayne and Book are working out, etc. Perhaps we don't see (hear) it is more of a production difficulty - what kind of music would they be listening to, and would it be practical to write and record it? Think about how much music has changed in the last 100-200 years, and try to project what it might be in 500. As fitting as it might first seem for Jayne to be listening to 'Eye of the Tiger' during a workout, or Wash singing along to a Barry White tune behind the wheel, I don't really think our music will be around. Yeah, there's the classical music from Shindig, but they had to have some type of music at the ball. But I don't think they should include music unless they're going to go all out and come up with something that might be popular in 500 years.

So, surely our BDH have the capability - we just don't see it. For that matter, we never see them read, or watch TV. I do think it would be great in the BDM if we got to see some glimpses of some bizarre tv show. Or just hear a commercial from a tv that's playing in the background for the gossling-juggling championship on "ESPN 8: The Ocho"

I mock you with my monkey pants

As stated, Kaylee listens to music in Shindig. 2. Wash quotes the Beatles (Cry baby, cry...).
3. Simon has his encyclopedia which has several different memory sticks, leading me to beleive there's more than just factual stuff in there.
4. Kaylee has a Han Solo in carbonite figure, so they watch movies.
5. Mal and Inara check the cortex for messages; it's certainly reasonable that everyone uses it for entertainment feeds as well.

While this spreads into general entertainment and not just music, there's fair compelling evidence that there are entertainment options on ship.

Wow, good points. I forgot about the entertainment possibilities of the Cortex. Duh!

If you extrapolate from what our homes are like today, what Serenity would have is this:

Cortex: download what you will
Encyclopedia jobbers: play what you have saved
Central ship computer: Everyone's favorites saved in a mass library whereupon anyone can have any file played in the room that they are currently occupying.

I don't see the operations crew, (Mal, Kaylee and Wash), listening to a lot of music when part of their brain is always focused on Serenity. How the ship sounds in their ears and how she vibrates under their feet is an important part of 'checking her vitals'. Music might mask a problem that ears would pick up instantly.

The only problem with the Han Solo figure is I'm guessing it's an "earth that was" artifact. Wouldn't that be hideously expensive and out of the price range of a firefly mechanic?

Wash mentioned that River being psychic was "science fiction". Apparently the genre still exists, and I could easily see Star Wars holding a classic status. There's no reason people wouldn't still be making Han; they're still making t-shirts with Shakespeare's face on them now. Kaylee came from a backwater planet. She loves ships; she watched Star Wars a lot. It adds up...

I've never noticed the Han Solo action figure. Anyone know what episode(s) I can find it in?

the message, when Kaylee is sitting in the hammock listening to the message over again
(Simon has come in to talk to her but chickens out)
and behind Kaylee you can see it...if you look hard

but it may not be an expensive artifact
it may be that Star Wars is so popular because it has entered public domain...
so anyone who wants to can make & sell toys
they won't need licensing at all.

...and I imagine it's a popular theme with browncoats. Since the Imperials lost in the film. Hell, I can imagine that the Alliance has banned the film, making it crazy popular all over again.

Actually it was Mal & Wash.

MAL: Cry baby, cry. . .
WASH: Make your mamma sigh.

Strictly speaking, they're not *really* quoting the Beatles (the lyrics, I think, go "cry baby cry/make your MOTHER sigh", as opposed to mama). In the absence of additional Beatles references, I'd chalk that up to coincidence rather than a quote.

Wasn't the Lassiter originally going to be the Beatles "white album" but ME couldn't get the rights to the image? That would add weight to the quoting the Beatles theory.

Never heard that, but it would explain why there's no lasers for half a season, and then suddenly lasers in two different episodes. I know it was called something different in the original script (the Mexican, right?).
