Maybe everyone already knows it, but just in case you don't, Alyson Hannigan will be on next Tuesday's episode of the best show now on TV, "Veronica Mars."

Best show now on TV you say?..

I never heard of it before and after reading your post did a search and looked at the shows premise.. looks like utter tripe to me.

It aint even sci-fi....

Some of the writing is brilliant. Some of the acting (not Bell's) is atrocious. But I never know what's going to happen next on "Mars."

I can tell you pretty well what's going to be on the next episode of CSI in any of its variants. I can tell you the general direction of the overall arc of Gilmore Girls. I have a good idea of what young Superman is going to do next on Smallville (though the witch thing is indeed curious). But it took me several episodes of "Mars" to even figure out the main characters, and I have no idea what's going to turn up next week. No, it's not sci-fi.

But hey, that's me. I don't watch much TV, no ABC or Fox at all, just CBS, NBC, WB and PBS. Give it a shot. Be a kick to see "Willow" again, eh?

Does anyone think Kristen Bell looks a little like SMG?

No, she's prettier. < ducks >

I like Veronica Mars, but it's hardly the best show on right now. That would be Lost, IMO.

I don't get "Lost," so can't compare. Though sometimes I get lost....

Kristen Bell has something, that's for sure. Not quite looks, more like an aura. I saw her on some late-night show a few weeks back, and she was stunning. Yet her face is nowhere near as pretty as, say, SMG's. [Not ducking.]

I think it's safe to say that VM is one of the better shows out there. Consider actually watching it once or twice so you'll have a better idea of what they're going for.

Lost is watchable.. but really is just "Bold and the Beautiful" or "Days of our Lives" marooned on an island with strange creatures..

The BEST show on TV right now is Battlestar Galactica! No contest.

The thing about Kristen Bell is, she's TINY, prolly smaller than SMG. This seems to play well in the show.

Basically, she's a high-schooler (despite her age...) who helps her dad, who's a private eye. Veronica is at least as good as the old man, and also takes on the problems of her classmates and, like as not, stands everything on its head.

Veronica's mom is gone because of strife with her father, who used to be a cop. But when he "screwed up" (apparently) an investigation of the death of Veronica's girlfriend, Mom left and Dad left the police for private practice.

And there's rich kids, one with a famous father, subplots galore, and Veronica has made friends with a biker who is played by Francis (?) Capra, son of the famous Capra, and a fine actor.

The dead girl gets lots of play in flashbacks, and no one knows how or why she died.

It's almost time for the show...about an hour. Enjoy!

Okay, Alyson had a small part, but I suspect she'll be back. Almost guarantee it. However....

Anyone else think she looked not particularly good? Almost prematurely aged? Or was it just the black outfit and concealing hat?

And who didn't like Bell in that outfit with that hair?!

I like the show and its a finalist for best new show of the year, but its not the best show on TV. Its not even the best show on Tuesday night. Although that will change now that NYPD Blue is going away. That'll make it a run between Gilmore Girls, which has made a nice comeback from a floundering last season, and Veronica Mars, runner up for best new show of the year.

The real best new show and best show on TV is Battlestar Galactica. We'll see if it holds its top spot or squanders it like so many before (Joan of Arcadia, Smallville, One Tree Hill).

Auraptor & Hero,

Can't believe how much I agree with you guys, despite our political differences.
I guess the long coat and bad hat did cover up a lot of Alyson. Wonder if she's pregnant. I was expecting Willow-y expressions, which weren't there. Perhaps we'll get a better look at her, next ep.

I've never seen Batt. Galac, which isn't on the few channels I get, so can't judge it. But heartily agree Gilmore Girls is NOW one of the best out there. It bombed last year, but has the basis, the ideal characters (all 20 or 30 of 'em, surely the largest regular cast on TV), and now the balanced writing to be one of the finest shows ever.

And jeez, isn't One Tree Hill some of the worst crap you've ever seen? I asked myself last night WHY I bothered to watch, only to answer that I couldn't believe how bad it is, and to find out how much worse it can get. Talk about needing writers, and some purpose to the arc...!

I still have some hope for Smallville, but the character who's chasing Lana Lang has to GO. And Jane Seymour needs to be told to SPEAK UP, and stop that phoney whispering. And you'd think Clark and Lex could say thank you once in a while to each other, instead of just staring at each other in silence as the scene fades to black.

Okay, Smallville sucks.

Why I bother to watch One Tree Hill? Two reasons:

1. DVR technology allows me to watch just about anything I have even the least bit of interest in.

2. Sophia Bush. She's not only the only person on that show who can act, she's the only one who's got a character to sink her teeth into. And she's hot, really hot.

Despite the severe outfit, it was nice to see Alyson *not* as Willow. I was looking for it, too, to see if there were any of the vocal tics or ways that gave Willow her, well, Willowyness.

The best thing about Veronica Mars is the writing. It never panders to the audience, and even though it's a show filled with teenagers, none of them act like it. It's an intelligent -- often very funny -- detective/coming-of-age/murder mystery drama that many have dismissed without really giving it a chance. It's worth checking out.

Here's what Alyson had to say about Veronica Mars
-------------
http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Kristin/Archive2005/050122.html

"I called and begged and begged and begged," [Rob Thomas, creator of VM and Cupid] told me. "But the great thing about casting Alyson, her hesitation was like, 'Am I going back and doing the new Buffy?' But at the same time, she said she loved the show. She knew everything that was going on and she's a really big Jason Dohring [Logan] fan. And the fact that she would get to do scenes with Jason, actually, I think meant a lot to her."
--------
http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|93624|1|,00.html

"Nice," Hannigan says. "They were talking about being compared to 'Buffy,' which I'm sure is annoying for them, but it's actually a good thing. There's always going to be some sort of comparisons, and at least it's a show that was also critically acclaimed, instead of some sort of bad show. I would hope that 'Buffy' fans would watch it."

"Hopefully they'll get picked up for a second season, and there'll be more of a big arc for my character. Call me optimistic, but if UPN wants to have good shows on the network, I would think they'd keep the ones they have.

"They need to keep 'Veronica Mars,' because it's such a good show. I don't understand why people aren't watching it.

Alyson Hannigan, who debuts Tuesday as Logan's spoiled half sister, has signed on to do a second episode, airing April 26. And Aly tells me she'll "hopefully have a big arc next season," too! Tuesday's episode, she points out, "is really just an introduction to [my character] and telling the audience that she exists so that later on I can actually have more to do. I hope it works out because it is such a great show and it was so much fun to do. But I got so nervous [on my first day]. I think I probably blew my first scene. I don't know what happened. I just got so nervous. It was as if I had never done a day on Buffy before!" Having seen her big debut, I can assure Aly that she has nothing to worry about. Our favorite little witch did just fine.

And for those of you familiar with Television without Pity, Veronica Mars is currently the highest scoring (based on recapper and user grades) drama this season on the TWoP roster. Lost currently ranks 8th and Battlestar Galactica ranks 12th.

Hey, WYK!

Thanks a bunch for the Alyson info. Nice to know I'm not the only one out there who likes Veronica Mars.

I'd like to see some of the Buffy/Angel/Firefly bit-part actors on it too, especially Carlos Jacott. I suspect Mars would get even better, and for we fans, more fun to watch. Not to turn it into Buffy, but I'd like to see some of the familiar gang.

Speaking of Jacott, anyone else agree "She Spies" was TOTALLY RUINED by dropping him second season? His part on the first season was a breath of fresh air to me. He plays comedy well.

Ruxton, you should read this post at wheadonesque.com that talks about Eonline Kristin's Save our Show campaign. The funny thing is what started out as a "vote for Point Pleasant" request, ended up as a "Sorry Marti but Point Pleasant sucks, I voted for Veronica Mars instead" thread. There are alot of Buffy fans who like Veronica Mars. http://whedonesque.com/?comments=6177

Because of the low ratings, the fans at television without pity have started a Save the Show thread. There are alot of ways to show your support for the show. http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3123655

Yeah, and over at TWoP the recapper Couch Baron looooves Veronica Mars. That in itself is an odd thing, since TWoP is known for being snarky and really sticking it to shows that suck. I think VM surprised a lot of people. Fingers crossed for another season.

i voted for american dreams. that show is freaking amazing. i'm so scared it's gonna get cancelled:( if you haven't seen it, please check it out. it starts up again on weds. march 9th at 8. it's not hard at all to get into. i know it sounds like sentimental crap, but it is SO GOOD. you really never know for sure what's going to happen, the acting is great, the writing and direction are great (david semel anyone?) and the characters are so interesting. character development out the wazoo. awesome stuff.

Rhymephile = "I think VM surprised a lot of people."

Veronica Mars also surprised me. I watched it out of curiosity, "...a long time ago," and forgot about it. But then, over the next few days, I started thinking about what I'd seen and heard. It haunted me. Everything -- from the theme song to the intricate facial expressions of Miss Bell, to the plot -- kept coming back into my consciousness. I watched again, and my next thought was, this show is too good to last. It'll be gone like Firefly before we know it.

And now I'm hooked, and wishing it the very best and longest life.

WYK, thanks. Lots of good stuff out there.

This is from Couch Baron's latest Veronica Mars recap:
I wouldn't normally bestir myself to do something about it, but this is the best, most interesting show I've ever recapped, which, thank the HoPs, is saying a lot.

Couch Baron has also recapped Buffy, Oz, and Everwood, so for him to say that Veronica Mars is the best show he has ever recapped says alot about the show. For a site known for ripping shows apart, it is so weird to go on the VM TWoP boards because it is just one big continous Rob Thomas lovefest. Lost has a 39 page bitterness thread, and yet the biggest complaint the VM fans have is that they have to wait until March 29th for the next new episode.

I haven't been this excited about a show, and this nervous about the ratings since Firefly.
