okay, i have a question that i hope will generate LOTS of answers! what are some of the "shocking moments" you have encountered in any of the three shows we so religiously talk about on this message board? moments that were true jaw droppers to ones that made you raise an eyebrow to ones that made you gasp to ones that left you weak in the knees for a few minutes.

i will get things going. i think the moment in "serenity" when mal shoots dobson is certainly a moment when i thought to myself, "whoa! did that just happen?".

KNIBBLET

When Caleb took out Xander's eye, I screamed out loud.
I still miss Joyce. A fictional woman I never met - I miss her.
Whenever I think of Angel locking the multitude of bloodsuckers (both lawyer and vamp) in the room together, I can feel the feral grin fill my face. I still can't believe he did it.
My Firefly moment is River doing to math. Good stuff that.

I agree with Knibblet on Xander's eye.

Anya's demise was another big one.

And Buffy finding Joyce's body was just a kick in the gut.

Spike getting staked by Illyria.

Kaylee's dead.

Yes, the "Kaylee's dead" thing got me even though I saw the premiere last (yeah, them again) and knew that she was still around. It was just so well-performed by Nathan and Sean. Plus, it's Joss, and I don't trust him as far as I could throw a Fyarl demon.

For me it was in Objects, the moment when River speaks as Serenity. I was stomping around the room, in complete disbelief. I kept saying to my wife "NO WAY! He wouldn't do that! That would be so trite and how could we loose River like that!" etc etc etc for a few minutes, which slowly started to turn into "Well, I guess it could be an interesting way to take the plot" which of course later turned into "I KNEW IT!!!!!" at the end. :)

Loved that episode, just for the reactions of everyone else (and my own) to what was happening. Beautiful.

EMBERS

Good Question!
On BtVS: the end of S6 when Giles shows up and says:
"I'd like to test that theory"
I fell out of my chair...
and then followed by the finale for S6
when Spike got his soul,
Joss did a great job of misdirection on that,
and I was VERY surprised!

On Angel, in spite of a million casting spoilers,
I still found the appearance of Lyndsay in Eve's bed to be HUGE
(it would have been even better w/out the casting spoilers)

On Firefly Joss was constantly taking me off guard
Shooting Dobson was amazing.
Kicking that guy through the engine was cool.
I loved Inara getting the drop on YoSafBrig.
And everything about OiS took my breath away.

i forgot about that one! quite a shocker, you are right! it all happened so fast that i had trouble processing it before it was revealed that it was not the present time. i have to admit, at first, spike annoyed me but the more i saw of him, the more i grew to love him as a character and his dynamic with angel. i think he is my second favorite character (behind wes).

GORRAMREAVERS

All of the others but I have to add 'Passion' from Buffy S2 for obvious reasons (Jenny Calender) but the scene at the end when Buffy punches Giles..made me cry and still does.

Also, Innocence from Buffy S2. The way Angel acts around Buffy...just an awesome job by David on that one. So creepy and evil.

SHINYSEVEN

When Dawn shows up...Buffy's WHAAAAT? (I'll deny it if anybody brings it up, but I used to watch Dawson's Creek so I was sucker-punched by the casual addition of new siblings for Pacey, and prepared to be disappointed that Joss would do anything so lame.)

And the end of "Normal Again" ("We're losing her.") BTW I wrote a Firefly story in which Normal Again was a Firefly episode narrated by River's shrink at the Academy.

Oh! When Doyle died. I was amazed that Joss would kill off a main charater. Plus, I adored Doyle.

Xander losing his eye and Darla staking herself were big shockers for me.

I agree with Xander losing an eye and Dawn showing up.

I think the end of Heart of Gold was a major shocker for me.
Inara: "I'm leaving"
me: nooooooooo!?!?!

BADGERSHAT

One of the biggest shocks for me and mhy bestest buddy was at the end of the WB-run of Buffy, when Giles is calmly speaking with whatshisname, I think Ben? The guy who is actually Glroficus, too, and Giles explains the differences between people like Buffy and people like them, then calmly reaches down and, if i recall correctly, suffocates him...

THAT threw me off into a tizzy...

ISABELLER

Ooooh, got to delurk to join in this thread :)

Most shocking moment definitely has to be "Kaylee's Dead" for me - I started watching with the DVDs so I was devastated to think that this cute, funny character was dead.

MAUGWAI

In "Smashed" when Buffy and Spike had sex for the first time. I just thought she was going to beat the crap out of him. Then she jumped on him and they literally screwed the house to the ground.

That got me too for a couple of seconds. Then I remembered that she was on the front of the box and I was thinking "What the f...?"

Also Mal knocking out Jayne so suddenly at the end of Ariel. I thought the episode was over and was expecting them to make us wait a couple of episodes for the inevitable confrontation.

THETRAINJOBMAN

The one that I found most shocking, and I can't believe nobody else has mentioned here yet, is the death of Tara at the end of BtVS S6. Unfortuantely, I was spoiled by a friend (who I'll only forgive because she's now a Browncoat too ), and thus knew it was going to happen, but not when or how.

It was truly Joss at his most evil, with Tara and Willow all kissed and made up and with Amber included in the credits for the first time, then suddenly *BANG* and she's gone, not ever coming back.

Kaylee: "No call to be snappy, Jayne."
Jayne: "Are *you* about to jump onto a moving train?!"

SIMONWHO

As soon as I saw Amber in the credits in that episode, knowing it was the third from last one, I just instantly knew that she was toast.

Of course, Angel turning out to be a vampire was a big surprise. At least it would have been if a friend who was watching the show with me, having seen it before, not let that secret slip during that very episode. Needless to say, she was heavily mocked when the big revelation came.

"Wow, I'm so surprised. I did not see that coming."

Favourite one in Firefly was the guy being kicked into the engine. In Buffy, Jenny Calendar gets killed ("Did they just ..."). In Angel, probably Cordy's end. Just so sad and while not totally unexpected, the emotions stirred by her return meant her demise was felt even more.

That's a no-brainer. The flashback scene where they introduce Kaylee. That messed with my head AND my hormones. ;)

PERIDIDDLE

Ohh, most shocking moments...

Buffy had way too many for my own good. Oz walking in during New Moon Rising, Spike getting his soul, Tara's death (even though I KNEW it was coming...I watched via reruns), Joyce's death...so many others. And Anya's death was really sudden and, IMO, disconnected and unemotional when it actually happened. I don't think that makes sense, but when you first see it, you can't believe she's going to die mid-battle with no one else there except for Andrew.

Angel, well I only watched season five, but the death of Spike's coat was a topic of muttering for me for WEEKS. (I kid you not...I was very upset.) And Fred's death made me cry and gasp. I couldn't believe it.

Firefly...woo hoo! I think it was the reintroduction of YoSafBridge in Trash, or even her 'I am your wife' in OMR. Tee hee. Or when Dobson hits Book while he's down in 'Serenity.' That was just wrong.

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."
