A while back, we had a thread going of what actor, be it superstar or character actor, would you like to see in a future FIREFLY movie or if the show kept going on. Well, I'd like to start a variation of that thread. If you were in carge of casting and had a Jim Jarmusch like tendency to cast singers or musicians, what musician would you like to cast in the FIREFLY verse?

Two off the top of my head are Levon Helm, the drummer/singer off of The Band and David Byrne, the lead singer of the Talking Heads. Levon could be Wash's or Kaylee's dad (they kinda look alike and act alike) and Byrne could be one of the scientists or Blue Handed guys after River. He's without a doubt one of the weirdest looking musicians around, so I think his oddballness would fit perfectly in the Firefly verse.

So what singer would you like to see try out their acting chops opposite the crew of Serenity.

"NO HAI ES BANDAI. THERE IS....NO.....BAND. AND YET....WE HEAR A BAND."

I'd like to see David Bowie, except that no matter what he does, he's David Bowie, not much change happens with him "acting." He could be a partner of Badger's business.
If I wanted to see something odd and possibly hilarious, Bjork would be an excellent choice, maybe as another experiment by the hands of blue. Her frolicking around the ship singing songs in her crazy wardrobe would give River a chance to feel sane.

They Might Be Giants. John and John could be a quirkier two by two. or more seriously, Adam Busch (now a part of the band Common Rotation), I always enjoy actors from one Joss verse showing up another.

reginaroadie:

I'd have to go with Ric Ocasek (The Cars) as Two-Fry's avenging brother. He wants to kill Mal for the deed; but then he finds out Jayne is responsible, and the two face off.

As they stare each other down in the high, noonday sunlight, they discover that they are actually distant kin (because in the Appalachian-style familial system of Firefly, who isn't?), and can't kill one another. As Ocasek, whose nickname we learn is 'Stubby', drives away in his (oddly) pristine red '60 Corvette convertible, Jayne searches his soul for the meaning of family and the consequences of violence...

Then he remembers that he really doesn't have one, except when the chips are down and he's got a losing hand, and goes to the local bawdy house for some "John Thomas time".

Fictionally,

zoid

P.S.
The mystery of the show, about which we will all endlessly obsess for several years (until the next movie comes out), is how the heck Stubby got a '60 Corvette, how did he maintain/fuel it, and what significance the color red has in the Whedonverse (and why don't people wear more hats, stovepipe or otherwise?). We'll eventually agree it has profound meaning in our lives, and Joss will chuckle softly to himself as he reads our analyses on his computer in his soho, eating cheese fries and scratching himself unselfconsciously...

P.P.S.
Yeah, I've got Candy-O in the car Kenwood. I'll let you know when I get to the Pink Floyd folder.

P.P.P.S.
Or, Elvis Presley as the King of the Reavers. Ought to be about right for the part, now...

I'd like to see Leonard Cohen as a wisened old sage who inspires poetry and romance aboard serenity :) In particular he has a profound effect on Jayne, he is so moved by Leonard Cohen's poetry that he asks Leonard for help in the art of romance....

JAYNE: "Learn me how to speak them fancy words, so I might myself win Kaylee"

LEONARD: "Kaylee... Ohh you don't need words for her"

JAYNE: "Sure I do - She goes all moon-eyed over that doc fella for all his smarts! How's a guy like me gonna stand a chance?"

LEONARD: "You evr thought of just looking into her heart Jayne?"

JAYNE: "Huh?"

Or some such thing.

Hmm. Toughie.

But I'd have to say Kenny Loggins.

Just imagine it!

"Highway to the Dangerzone" playing out during a chase scene involving Serenity and a Tom Cruise led band of fighter jets!

All three members of Blink-182, in a video recorded distress call of a ship that's about to be boarded by reavers.
And then, after our crew boards the ship looking for loot, they come across their bodies, and Simon concludes that the reavers did it in a different order.

Either that, or Roger Daltrey as a Highlander. Wait, wrong show. Roger Daltrey as Badger's Father.

Maybe Sting in a quick cameo on a Dune-like planet.

A clean-cut, make-up-free Alice Cooper as the mayor of a town that gets attacked by Ted Nugent's crazy hill-dwelling, gun-toting maniacs while Serenity is in town on a deal.

And I'd definately enjoy David Byrne and David Bowie working two-by-two. Taken out of context, that just sounds wrong.

Oh, in some museum or some rich guy's house, there could be old Earth-That-Was artifacts, including a poster for "Dingos Ate My Baby" and a first-release record of Led Zepplin II.

I mock you with my monkey pants

For some reason, Slash from Guns'N'Roses/VelvetRevolver works in my mind.

I can imagine him staying on board Serenity, chilling out in the cargo bay a lot, or wandering the decks, not speaking much and everyone wondering what the hell he's doing on the ship. :)

He could be a long lost relative of Jayne! :)

I swear I was just about to say the exact same thing, TMBG and Adam Busch!

I can see Adam as a kind of outerworld contact that the crew need to contact to get a job. The two Johns couldn't be as evil as the blue handed men though, I'm thinking some sort of fence for some dodgy goods...

Agreed. I'd like to kick Good Charlotte through an engine. And any of those teeny-bopper neo-punks who think they're so radical. Reaver fodder, the lot of 'em.

What MUSICIAN...? Part II:

Okay, so I listened to Pink Floyd all the way home from work (a little under an hour). The folder is pretty heavy on 'The Wall' stuff; so, I decided to cast Bob Geldof, rather than Gilmour or Waters. Bob's a musician, too (after a fashion), and has had some acting experience.

He'll play a somewhat moral politician (I know those terms really shouldn't be used in the same sentence, but bear with me) who's gained some notoriety for his community activism. But he's got a dark secret: a twisty, tawdry love triangle involving another politician's wife (herself basically a train wreck waiting to happen). Because he wants the other politician's wife to be totally unfettered by her husband, Geldof's character has his rival spirited away by Reavers.

High drama, don't you think? I had the perfect guy picked out to play the jilted politician-turned-Reaver food/clothing -- also a musician as it happens -- but unfortunately, he's unavailable. Apparently, he'd been hanging around in his hotel room, desperately waiting for a phone call; but, he's gone now...

Memorially,

zoid

P.S.
Requiescat in pace, Mike. And if Kell could forgive Paula, so can we all.

I think this has potential...

Also, Alison Krauss in the background is great, but I'd have it be Earl Scruggs playing alone, or with a fiddle player.
