Last nite I bought the last/only copy at a Borders near me. I am hooked on Half Life 2 and only read the 1st 'chapter'. Looks like it is gonna be good. I wanted to skip to Jewel's chapter but I will read it in order. Once I defeat HL2.

What annoys me is that they don't email you to tell you about the change. I bet if I hadn't cancelled my order it would still be saying "Estimated shipment date 31st March"!

To be fair though, 99% of the time I'm perfectly happy with Amazon.

I'm assuming that the book isn't actually being published in Europe (at least not yet), hence the delay. Thank heavens for holidays to the USA, that's all I can say :smile

Important people don't do field work.

I take back any nice things I said about Barnes and Noble earlier. 2:30am April 2nd, they sent me an email saying that the book had been delayed. They posted a new shipment date of 1 May 2005. I almost had a stroke. I immediately cancelled my order and the next morning headed off to the local bookstores to look for it. No joy. I came back, and grudgingly reordered it. It now has a ship date of April 6th. So, all that for nothing. Because of bad info, I apparently delayed my own copy. Days like these, make me wish I'd never giving up sniffing glue!

There is only one thing I hate about the book... its cover! The cashier probably though I was a self-help fanatic. The graphic and title make it look like one of those books. I almost expected L. Ron Hubbard's name to be on the cover somewhere.

Yeah, I think I might've gotten one of those looks, too. I know I found that cashier's reaction hi-larious.

No, I didn't try to convert her. I know she wanted to ask, too; but I kept strictly mum. I'll bet she moseyed back and browsed a copy on her next break, purchased one when she got off shift, has finished reading it cover to cover, and has since purchased the Firefly DVD set. Mystery: How much would you give to know what Mona Lisa was thinking about when she smiled that smile?

Now that you mention it, I don't hate the cover so much. Although I doubt most people making a cursory glance at the cover do catch that sideline, it certainly does mitigate the L.-Ron-Hubbardness of it.

I've just gotten through the essay on Sawney Beane. Now I'm thinking the Reavers are a tool of Blue Sun! Only five more months left before that theory might be answered...

I'm savoring this book more with each page turning!

Finding Serenity, Finding new converts.

So I ordered my copy of Finding Serenity and the Wonderfalls DVDs. One of my friends saw Finding Serenity "Anti-heroes, Lost shepards and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly," which, with my continual outspoken appreciation of the series led him to bring in two other people and give the show a try. Naturally I show Serenity, and an hour and a half later we're planning when to watch The Train Job. The magic's still there.

You left out Ying's Firefly Chinese Pinyinary website. (grumble grumble)." So I'm relieved to find out it was a case of the author being modest rather than the author neglecting to cite the most complete online reference for Firefly translations.

Well the site still says 11-14 days before dispatch, so maybe they're just sending out pre-orders.

Hey, folks:

We're coming up on the end of first week sales (Friday the 8th of April). Anybody know where to find the sales rankings for literary releases? How long does it take to tabulate first-week sales figures? (NB: Writers or literary agent-types, R.S.V.P.)

I'm really interested in following this book's performance in the first few weeks of publication, and a running tally for total sales worldwide, right up through Serenity's theatrical run. Those results should be indicative of the effect the Browncoat Faithful will have on the movie's performance.

Just remember, the book is not a major release. If it 'charts', it will be almost entirely due to sales to Browncoats/Whedonites. Nobody else is gonna know, due to lack of promotion for the book (except by us). The movie should get at least some advance promotion by Universal, so we won't be going it alone there.

But if the book does in fact 'chart', it will be an undeniable indicator that there are enough Browncoats around to make the BDM a success, even if only a less-than-average number of casual moviegoers ever buy a ticket. By successful, I mean at least $60 million box office and a couple hundred thousand DVD's sold.

That'll get the sequels made. "I call that a win."

I had a 2fer last night....
I called my local B&N to see if they had Finding Serenity in stock. The guy who answered the phone said they had two in stock but when he went to find them he could'nt locate them. So, after work I went to the store to look myself.

I could'nt find it either.
I asked for help from the customer service desk.
She could'nt find it either.
She called someone else for help.
The three of us searched for 15 minutes before one of us came up with the goods (end of the row in a book rack NEXT to the SciFi section, go figure huh?).

So, while the someone else she called went out back to get me a copy of the new David Webber book that I wanted also, she read the cover.

"Anti heroes, Lost Shepards..." she said.
"Ummm Space Hookers????" she said.

So, of course I had to explain. Turns out she's an unabashed scifi nut and self proclaimed trekkie who only vaguely remembers something called firefly.

So, after I straightened her ass out over the fact that Firefly beats the tar out of any ST:TNG season, ever conceived, she went with me to the DVD section where we found her a copy of the Season 1 (and only) episodes.

And, yes she bought it while I sat there using her employee discount.

I got the book, and I got a convert, all in one night!!!!

Like I said, a 2fer.

Heh. You're probably right. Funny thing about the title -- Ben Bella Books asked me for an essay title several weeks after I turned in my final draft. I'm not great with titles and, honestly, hadn't given it much thought. The folks at Ben Bella then said, "Well, just give us a temporary title to use as a placeholder for the manuscript proofs."

Off the top of my head, I said, "Just put down 'The Captain May Wear the Tight Pants, but It's the Gals Who Make Serenity Soar.'" We agreed that we'd change it as soon as either them or me came up with something better. Turns out, neither of us did. Worked out okay, though, since I think the title accurately conveys the mostly jovial tone of my essay.

It's nice to hear that so many people are enjoying the book. It was a fun project to be a part of.

Anakin will have fathered twins on Amidala (who I've got to say has terrible taste in men, perhaps worse than Eva Braun), but they too will be spirited away into hiding, neither even knowing they have a sibling. ...Let alone a Midichlorian-induced monster for a father (ah, Lucas and his mitochondrial genocide gods!).

So, in the thrilling and heart-warming conclusion to moviedom's most beloved sci-fi series, Hayden Christensen will be transformed from a whining 6'1" skinny streak of piss into Darth Vader (six feet seven inches, as portayed by David Prowse), the basso-voiced right hand man of Satan Incarnate. That's what I call character development! Together, Vader and Emperor Palpatine will skip off into the sunset, spreading death and darkness everywhere they turn.

I predict some children will be seen exiting theatres with tears flowing down their faces, while others will have a disquieting glow in their eyes...

So, yeah, I feel fairly comfortable saying, 'epically depressing conclusion'.

P.S.
I know it may sound as though I'm bashing SW, but I'm really only bashing GL. What happened to him? I stood on line for hours at the theatre to see the original trilogy at least 6 times each. That's how good I thought they were, how compelling the mythology. Ronald Reagan used that mythology as a catch phrase to defeat the Evil Empire, the former USSR. That's not happenstance, it's testimony to the genius of the original trilogy. So where did George's train jump the gorram track, huh?

I will go see it in the theatre, 'cause I'm that kind of idiot. But, as Luke/Han/Leia/Lando/Obi Ewan would say, "I've got a bad feeling about this...". It'll really be kind of a blessing when the old girl finally shuffles off the mortal coil: It's a shame to see Star Wars suffering from senile dementia this way.
