I'd like to say I would be Mal, but in reality I'm a little closer to Simon.

Anybody out there Mal?
Already know who's Jubal Early (hi, ImEarly :)

I'd LIKE to be Zoe but I'm probably more like Kaylee. Or, her semi-evil twin sister who CANNOT repair anything. Even on her back.

I think I will add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.

I am an amalgam.

I have Wash's sense of humour, Simon's social skills, Book's patience, and Jayne's intellect.

Why the hell couldn't I reverse my Simon & Jayne qualities?

If you had Jayne's intellect you couldn't spell amalgam.

You'd be right of course if he were really trying to spell "amalgam." He was actually trying to spell "mailgram."

I'm one too. I have River's social skills, Kaylee's mechanical abilities, Simon's intelect (but Jayne's spelling abillities ), and Wash's driving abilities.

I think I'm a bit like Kaylee. I like to fix things around my house and sometimes I have a bit of Wash's humor when I feel like being a smartass and on my bad days I sometimes act like River. I sometimes don't make ANY sense when I get moddy.

Important people don't do field work.

I'm probably the closest to Wash, but I aspire to be Simon, social befuttering and all. I think that the fact that he likes Kaylee, but can't instantly make a connection with her due to his upbringing is priceless. Plus, he ain't no cowardly weenie. Watch in Serenity as he stands up to Mal not once, but twice. But, he also knows his place after he's in the crew. He recognizes Mal as the leader of the group, and I don't think that's ever more evident than in "Jaynestown" as he tries to explain to Mal that nothing happened with Kaylee. Almost the same way you would explain to some girl's father. Plus, I've had some book learnin', and while I don't want to be a doctor, I really want to be a teacher, and you can see Simon as a teacher in the episode Ariel...quite a good one, actually, patient when he needs to be, and condescending(almost) when he needs to be. Also, the first time he's thrust into a leadership role (albeit a mock one) in Jaynestown, he flounders, never really finding the place he needs to be in. (And, if you notice that there is almost no one on the crew that everyone comes down on so hard as Simon. He's trying, and his best, I think, but he never really seems to be able to get these people to like him, and I think its something that he cares about.) I know that when I was put in a leadership role for the first time, everything went wrong around me.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am definitely closer to Mal than any of the others, though I look more like Jayne than Mal.

Somewhere on the internet there is a Firefly personality test. It went through the boards quite a while ago. My husband and I took it and I came up 87% Wash. My husband came up Zoe so I guess we were meant to be

I've thought about it a little bit. The great thing about Firefly is that you have archetypical sci-fi characters acting in very non-archetypical ways. A flirty, sexual mechanic. A rich doctor thrust into a very odd situation where he almost can't cope. A matronly, sexy, warrior-woman first mate. A pilot who's assured in what he does as he's decidedly unassured about his marriage. A reverend who chooses (don't forget that) to be among brigands, thieves, whores, and fugitives. A captain who's lost his faith, and struggles to balance humanity with the need to do what needs to be done. A thug who is far from mindless, and has shown that he has a soft touch from time to time. A prostitute who longs for a relationship, but knows having one would be destructive to the career she has chosen for herself. A fugitive mind reader who loves where she's ended up as she fears what going back would mean. These are wonderfully drawn character, rich in backstory that we almost know nothing about. There isn't a one it wouldn't be exciting to be, as they end up in situations that we find ourselves in from time to time. They make mistakes, they have no luck, and they're strapped for cash a lot. That's what makes Firefly so great, and that's what I would like people who haven't seen it to experience.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Yeah, like I said, thought about it a gorram lot!!

But that don't make any of what you said wrong!! I wholeheartedly concur! And I jsut love the whole structuralist approach to the characters - each one has its own intrinsic dichotomy - Levi-Strauss would be proud!!

Okay, then, I'll take Simon...

Well a while back I did that test that was spoken off and I ended up being Zoe! So I tried again and... I still ended up being Zoe! Being as how I'm a man and short and not in the least bit belligerent I find that odd.

Still.

From my own point of view I think I'm maybe nearest to Wash. I'd probably try and soften things with humour also and I'd definately be pissed off at the way Zoe always responds to Mal.

or maybe Book... I can do that watchful thing from afar too, and I'm certainly not a preacher!

Nice one Chrisisall.

Better mechanical skills than anyone but Kaylee, better body than anyone but Inara, and better sense of humour than any of 'em.
