I First heard of this show on comedy central thinking this would be a very strange tv show.
The plot is that in the year 3000 space aliens find a stash of old 1950's and younger films so basically the whole show is well you watch the film with the aliens in the background commenting on the film.
I later found clips of the show and to my suprise it was the funniest thing I had ever seen, their comments were so funny I had to cut the clip short so that I could breathe.
so I just wanted to know if anyone had heard of the show and had any comments?

if anyone wants to see the clips the adderss is

My cousin turned me onto the show about eight years ago. I thought it was incredibly HI-larious.

I was just thinking about it the other day, actually. I miss it.

"Finally" after 15 minutes?

Impatient, I think.

Anyway, I watched this show religiously in the early 1990's. There were quite a few episodes, some of which are available on DVD.

I *love* MST. Unfortunately, I was late to the game, seeing it in the later season reruns on Sci Fi - but have since borrowed many tapes from a friend of the Comedy Central era. Can't get enough.

Sorry to say, but you got the premise totally wrong. Not the year 3000. No aliens. And not all the movies are from the 50s either. ;)

All together now : In the not too distant future, next Sunday AD, there was a guy named Joel*, not too different from you or me. He worked at Gizmonic Institute, just another face in a red jumpsuit. He did a good job cleaning up the place, but his bosses didn't like him so they shot him into space! We'll send him cheesy movies, the worst we can find. He'll have to sit and watch them all and we'll monitor his mind. Now keep in mind Joel can't control where the movies begin or end. Because he used those special parts to make his robot friends. Robot roll call: Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, Croooow. If you're wondering how he eats or breathes, or other science facts: then repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should realy just relax - for Mystery Science Theater 3000!!

I've loved MST3K for many years now... I was upset when it moved to Sci-Fi because I didn't GET Sci-Fi (and still didn't until I moved here last summer. Oh, the stuff I've missed... and the stuff I'm glad I've missed).

Anyway, there's a fair number of episodes available on DVD, but unfortunately due to the way rights work we will never see a complete set. Luckily some of the best episodes (including "Manos, the Hands of Fate") are available. (I also recommend "Mitchell" and "Cave Dwellers").

Let's not forget the movie, either :).

MST3K started off as a local television show here in the Twin Cities. After a couple of years, Comedy Central picked it up - after that, it went to SciFi (and went rapidly downhill).

MST3K conventions held here are a riot. You've not lived until you've experienced the "Parade of Torgos".

Lots of the jokes in that show have a Minnesota (sometimes Wisconsin) edge to them. I'm still a card carrying Misty.

CYBERSNARK

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Canadian TV?

Only two eps of MST3K I've ever seen are "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" (seen years ago, while vacationing in Florida), and "This Island Earth" (a.k.a. the redundantly-titled MST3K movie).

What's really disappointing is how Space has tried (and failed) to copy it. First there was SpaceBar, which showed Cheesy movies framed by a no-budget bit in the titular Space Bar, where three characters (a human, a guy in a rubber forehead, and a mannequin "robot") would discuss the films.

Now they have Steve whatshisname (Red Green)'s Masterpiece Theatre, where they take about a half-hour of a bad movie and have Steve replace one character's lines (while all the others remain intact). No concept at all, and the guy has to explain what he's doing every episode.

Neither of them were/are all that funny (well, there were a few chuckles in SpaceBar, but not many).

I'd do (almost) anything to have real MST3K on Canadian TV.

Don't get me started on MST3K! I miss it so much I can't begin to explain. It was one of the best things on TV ever! I was one of the lucky ones who discovered it in its first season on what was then The Comedy Channel. I had a friend from Minneapolis who was there from the very beginning and saw all the KTMA's and man, did I envy her.

I went to the second con and it was great! The parade of Torgos, the costime contest, touring the set and the offices--all a lot of fun.

It was brilliant, clever, and innovative show not to mention laugh-out-loud funny! Most importantly the cast were incredibly talented comic actors and writers who were smart and they didn't dumb down their humor to the audience.

The show starts kicking into high gear in Season 2 and gets better. I lot of people didn't like the switch from Joel to Mike during season 5 (MITCHELL!) and I can see their point but the commentaries on the movies got sharper and sharper.

It did suffer in terms of the host segments when Frank, then Trace left the but the commentary was still worth it.

Then there's the songs, and the Amazing Colossal Episode guide, and the Oscar Preview Special, and the shorts! Oh man, the shorts were so funny!

Go to mst3kinfo.com for a rich bounty of information. But by all means see as many episodes as you can.

God, I miss it.

My favorite episode is still "Giant Spider Invasion," which was set in Wisconsin and they did it shortly after the Packers won the Superbowl. There's references to Leinies (Leinkugel beer which is brewed just a few miles from where my mom is from), and every time there is a group of people they're all yelling "Go Packers! Wooo!" except after they've all been mauled by the giant spider, in which case they're moaning "Paaaackerrrrs."

I LOVE MST3K! And for the record, I really liked Mike. Not to say that I didn't like Joel. I still haven't decided which of them is my favorite yet, and I've been working on it for about ten years now.

I disagree, the Sci Fi episodes were very good. I confess, I didn't like most of the Pearl host segments, but otherwise the show was as good as ever. (And those are the episodes when I started watching it).

As far as Joel vs. Mike, I think that both are very good in their own way. I have a slight preference for Joel episodes.

It is sad that the rights are so complicated. There are people that will make copies for you, though, for a small fee to cover various expenses. It keeps with the spirit of "circulating the tapes". Also, I haven't bought any of the volumes due to them being so expensive for just four shows. (I do have the Essentials though).

Maybe I need to watch it again, but for some reason Manos didn't jump out at me as being so great. There have been some episodes where the riffing has me in fits of laughter. There were long dull periods in this one.

One of my favorites is The Magic Voyage of Sinbad (he's not Sinbad!)

Also loved Girl in Gold Boots from the Sci Fi seasons. (remember when this movie was just girls, dancing around?)

I'm also from Minneapolis where it was a pretty big hit. I love MST! I was roomies with one of the writers in the before time, and after seeing 'What's Up Tiger Lilly' we all used to sit around a movie (any movie) with the sound off and make up new dialogue, so imagine what fun that was!

Love this show!

*edit to add: This roomie also recommended "The Gormenghast Trilogy" to me, which I think is one of the best, twisted, SFantasy bits of insane ravings I've ever encountered.

I remember seeing my first episode of MSTie in 1988, back in junior high. I've been an absolute fan since then, but I was disappointed when Joel bowed out and Mike Nelson took over. That's when it really started to go downhill, because Mike didn't have the timing or wit of Joel.

Luckily, NETFLIX has a pile of MST3K episodes available for rent! My wife and I immediately signed up for the $10 membership when we saw that we could get MSTie through there.

OMG Captain Shiny that's the whole reason I want the Night of the Living Dead on DVD (I have it already but when I saw that Mike Nelson did commentary, I wanted the new version immediately).

MST3K was a staple of my high school years. It was on Comedy Central at 3pm, we got out of school at 2:15. would go home watch animaniacs and then watch MSTie.

Whoever mentioned that some of the humor is a Minnesota/Wisconsin thing is so true! I'm in WI and damn if I don't know that some of that just flew right over other people's heads!

Also Manos the Hands of Fate is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life. "Pedos, the Feet of Fate"

Joel will always have my heart, but I still like Mike. My mom and I used to watch them every Saturday afternoon on Sci-Fi. Damn I miss this show. I wish they would replay them. I've gotta get my hands on the DVDs!

Yes, it must have so cool to have discovered MST3K at the beginning and started the ride from there! Luckily I also found it fairly early on... The Comedy Central days. I think the very first show I saw was "Jungle Goddess". It may not have been one of their most classic shows, but it was definitely laugh out loud funny and original enough to get me hooked. I kept watching regularly after that and fell madly in love. Firefly was the only other show to get into my heart like that.

Ooooooo... you got the ultra special convention package! I missed out on one of those (they sold out fast) but I did attend the convention. I suppose I qualified myself as a true MST3K geek to use my vacation time to fly from L.A. to Minnesota just to attend this con.

What a wonderful time I had... and yes the Parade of Torgos was wild, surreal and creepily hi-sterical. I remember Mike was the judge and he got speechless a few times. It takes a lot to get Mike stunned!

I did give in to fan geekdom to get a picture with Trace Beaulieu (Dr. Clayton Forrester, Crow T. Robot). I think this picture was my first ever picture with a TV or movie person. I always avoided the fan girl thing, but MST3K was just too awesome... so I gave myself over to the Fan Side...

Of course, these were the proto-fangeek days, down the road would come Firefly...

In January of 2004 the Sci-Fi Channel announced it would not be renewing the contract for Mystery Science Theatre 3000. I started a thread over at the Firefly message board in honor of the show. There were a lot of replies and great comments from folks. It's a good read for any MST3K fan:

Yup, another old-time Misty here. I've got a few of the shows on DVD, and plan to get more. My all-time favorite is still "Warrior of the Lost World", a *supremely* cheesy Mad Max/Road Warrior ripoff with Persis Khambatta (that cute bald chick from the first Star Trek movie) and Donald Pleasance, and "that guy from 'The Paper Chase' " as our beloved 'bots call him. Unfortunately, Rhino hasn't seen fit to release it on DVD, but I found it on DVD through another "unofficial" site ( www.cupandblade.com) that sells episodes that aren't commercially available elsewhere.

Some of the episodes are of pretty cheap quality, obviously taken from a VHS tape. I got a few of the Season One (KTMA) shows, including the awesomely bad "SST: Death Flight" with Billy Crystal as the gay flight attendant, Burt Convy (the original famous for being famous guy), and even Regis Philbin in the cast! During the show, you get to see the time and temp on the screen along with the KTMA logo at various times (10:32pm, 9ºF!).

They offer DVDs from all ten seasons of MST3K; so far, I've only bought a handful though. At $6 a pop, it'd be easy to blow a wad of cash there...

My mom got me into this show while it still came on SciFi. We rented the movie and got hooked! Now we quote Mike and the Robots all the time and no one understands what we're saying. It's really fun!

Thos of you who have never seen this show, you're in for a treat if you can get hold of some episodes. As others have said above, check out the official MST3K site, Satellite News, at http://www.mst3kinfo.com/

MST3K episodes that are not commercially released are available for p2p download through the Digital Archive Project at http://www.dapcentral.org/index.php .

Their versions are from VHS recordings made by people over the years, and range widely in quality. They have a list of available episodes, rated by content and video quality here:

http://www.dapcentral.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=MasterList2&file
=index&show=1

Caveats: they distribute through eDonkey and the downloads can take a VERY, VERY long time (weeks, or eternity if no one's sharing it). They're also sticklers for following the rules - both anti-piracy law and their own guidelines, so if you want to try downloading stuff from them read their rules carefully, then read them again, and another recap wouldn't hurt, then give it a try.

There are also fans who will distribute similar VHS-to-digital encodes, again of varying quality, as one poster mentioned above. Some of these distributors are linked through the "Tape Trading" section on Satellite News, http://www.mst3kinfo.com/trader.html
