I pimped the new Rob Thomas album over at the OB, too... Here's why:

Love it, Love it, Love it! And maybe it's just because Firefly/Serenity is such a huge presence in my mind but it seems like every song on his new album ("...something to be") is about Firefly:

1. this is how a heart breaks - Mal in Serenity Valley
2. lonely no more - story of every man who fell for Yo/Saf/Bridge
(This is the song getting heavy radio play right now)
3. ever the same - Zoe and Wash or maybe even Zoe and Mal
4. i am an illusion - Jubal Early & River
5. when the heartache ends - Mal & Inara
6. something to be - most of the characters (especially Jayne in Jaynestown)
7. all that i am - Simon & Kaylie; Zoe & Wash - beautiful song!! (Actually this is the perfect Buffy/Angel song if you're a fan there, too) I bet this will be the next radio release...
8. problem girl - Simon to River
9. fallin' to pieces - Mal and Serenity
10. my, my, my - Book's dilemma
11. streetcorner symphony - Kaylee's philosophy
12. now comes the night - Mal and Zoe
(or another Buffy/Angel theme)

So I think this album has great fanvid potential. :-)

Anyway, if you liked "Smooth" or anything Matchbox 20 ever did, you'll like this album. This guy's just getting better and better.

Right, cause Rob Thomas needs all the help he can get. Can hardly give his CD's away.

Yeah, the poor boy is really having a rough time...

I had hoped my post would inspire others to share the music that ALWAYS makes them think of Firefly/Serenity when they hear it and why they think it has that effect. I guess I should have made that clearer in my original post.

Sorry.

I couldn't think of anything at the time so I just tried to be funny (and failed, apparently). I'm stupid.

I think this is a very good thread. I listen mostly to punk, so nothing I listen to really makes me think of Firefly.

Really?! I would think Punk would be the perfect venue for Reavers, River, Blue Hands and sometimes even Jayne.

I must confess I've been out of the know on Punk since I left England but there's gotta be something!

Oh, and I got the joke and was trying to go with it - totally tongue in cheek. This humor stuff just doesn't translate well in postings...

Ugh. That's the second time I thought I offended someone. Maybe I just need to loosen up. I am pretty new to this whole blogging thing.

Now that I've thought more about it, there are a few songs that make me think of FF. One's called "Corozon de Oro" (Heart of Gold in spanish) by Rancid. It's really just the title, but it could stretch to the Mal/Inara relationship.

Also, most of Flogging Molly's new album brings to mind our BDH's. "Within a Mile of Home" and "Whistles the Wind" especially. Both are about the struggles of everyday people. There's a line in "Whistles the Wind" that goes:

My isolation/
Now there's a sobering thought/
a minute alone/
a lifetime too long

It makes me think of Mal in OOG and how happy he was to be reunited with his crew.

And for Jayne there's "David Courtney" by Rancid. I'd repeat the lines but it wouldn't be PG. Or PG-13. Lotsa f-bombs.

He'd probably love it, then!

Thanks for the recommendations. I know I've heard a bit of Rancid on our local "hard rock" station but I'll check out the songs you mentioned.

I have very eclectic taste in music...

For me, one song always comes to mind. It's rather eerie how well it seems to sing for Mal. The song is a patient, contemplative ballad, accompanied by sparse acoustic guitar and a mournful cello. Really an amazing song. I first heard it live about ten years ago and it brought tears to my eyes.

I'd be happy to send an .mp3 it to anyone who'd like to hear it. Jeff's web site ( http://www.jeffblack.com) has some of his other works in streaming audio. They're all great, but this one suits Firefly better than anything I've heard.

Quote:

"The Valley" by Jeff Black:
As I walk down through the Valley,
And I breath in the angel mist,
Nothing to protect me
From this place that the Devil blessed.
I walk with arms wide open
And dream where the wild wind blows
That Faith will give me shelter
And Time my own reward.

Chorus:
You see my soul is alive
And these dreams are real
And I will not let fear
Rule my life or how I feel
Inside my heart
For the rest of my days
On the wings of a dove
Carry me away

To the left I feel the joker
Tug and pull there at my coat
To the right I feel the thieves
Choke and dagger at my throat
Stumbling through the darkness
Like a drifter in the night
Shaking off the violence
To the fall of the morning light

Repeat Chorus

You see, they put it in the paper
Around the world and on the air
And they run it down the wire
Baby till we're tired and we just don't care
I know we can make
We can make it if we try
We can rise above this mess
And fly in a clear blue sky

Bridge:

I know when the light falls on me
There ain't nothing I can't overthrow
There ain't nothing I can't overcome
Or come to know.
So lay your heavy load down on me.
Strip everything I have away.
I am not your prisoner.
I am not afraid.

Repeat Chorus

Carry me away...
Carry me away...
Carry me away...

Wow! That really does suit Mal. I'd like to hear the music too. E-mail to Zoesfave at Yahoo(dot)com.

Thanks!

Thanks again, SergeantX. I got the download and just listened to it.

It's got that great Firefly feel to it and definitely reflects Mal's journey from Serenity Valley to "life on the edge". I think there may be an even stronger connection with the Mal portrayed in the movie.

And thanks for sending me the big, quality file. Took a few minutes for yahoo to scan and download but carries over the nice, acoustic (in the room) quality...

I'll check out Jeff's website for more good stuff...
