To me, there still isn't sound in space. The sounds in space in the trailer sounded like trailer sounds, added just for the benefit of the trailer. Listen to it carefully.. doesn't it sound pretty quiet as if they werent the real sounds in the movie? Some of the "Explosion" sounds are continually reused in different explosion scenes.

I agree.

The point of this trailer is to be fast paced, make noise, and look cool. Joss himself has said that universal is backing his play to have no sound in space, so its safe to say that element of the movie is going to remain intact.

However the key to no sound in space is letting the music carry the scene, and without time to build a score that wouldn't have the same impact in a trailer, so I feel that in terms of hoping to attract a crowd Universal made a good choice. After all, this trailer isnt for us browncoats. We KNOW we're going to see the movie. This is for all those folks out there that haven't joined our noble cause yet.

There is a small amount of sound in space in the current cut of the movie for various reasons.

Somewhere I read that there was a long battle sequence that was just too much silence in the screening cut. I am hoping that a wonderful score will set that to music, making that scene a (violent) space ballet of ships and explosions as it were, rather than violating the silence of space thing. We shall see. I'm sure it'll be Joss-ified and therefore it will work.

I. Can't. Wait.

Well, despite the fact that no one wants to tell you this, sound in space is not absolute. An explosion in space WILL create sound, as when it vaporizes something it creates a shockwave and gas. If you just dumped a microphone into space the minute amount of gas coupled with the explosion's force would create sound, OR if you were in a ship the shockwave hitting your hull would cause it to vibrate: creating sound in your nice pressurized atmosphere.

So having SOME sound in space when something really big blows up isnt totally unrealistic.

I pointed out just that in a Blog that was recently posted.

Here is what I wrote:

This is a major misconception about space. There IS sound in space since normal interstellar space isn’t a total vacuum. It’s below the level of human hearing but artificial sensors can detect it and if a sound is traveling through space and encounters an area of higher particle density (IE a ship's atmosphere) it possible (but very unlikely) that the sound could heard assuming the sound was extremely loud.

Additionally the sound could be amplified though the ships speakers for the benefit of the crew- namely the pilot.

Or even reproduced (by computer linked to sensors) for the crew's benefit. It'd be a useful way of making spaceflight more intuitive.

The sound of weapons fire whistling past your ear and getting louder as it tracks closer tends to be a bit more impactful than digitized beeping. Also more informative of what's going on when you're looking in another direction.
