Good choice, leelu777. I'd have to say that -- if someone put a gun to my head -- I'd choose "Out of Gas" by a whisker over "Objects in Space" and "Serenity, Parts I & II". OoG just has so much to say about all the characters that you can't get any other way. The introductions of Kaylee and Wash, in particular, are not only funny, but they speak volumes about those characters' personalities.

I, too, liked "Our Mrs. Reynolds" (Saffron: Mmmm!). Why would you choose that episode as your favorite?

Respectfully,

zoid

Objects In Space

Jubal Early is king.
Hence the moniker.

I would most definately have to say Out of Gas. I can't even describe all the ways that i love this episode. I love the flashbacks. I love how it is set in three different times at once. I love how you can watch it, and see Mal enter a room, then leave it in a flashback, then enter it in a different flashback. I love the look on Mal's face when he first sees Serenity. I love that we find out how Kaylee, Jayne and Wash joined the crew.

I just... love!

MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

CUNNINGORANGETOQUE

Personally i'd have to say i don't have faves, they are all great, but there are a few that especially stand out for me.(in no particular order)

1)Serenity(part 1 and 2)-
This is great because it is what gets everything going, this is the episode that puts everyone in the same boat and starts up the stories and unresolved questions. This is The Pilot.

2)Objects in Space-
This is the last episode originally aired, so of course it has sentimental value. But it does more than that. It shows the viewers what the crew want to say, without them really saying it to eachother. It shows their amazing loyalty and bond as a group, shown especially in the fact that when it comes down to it, even Mal, the captain, listens to River for what to do. By the end it shows them all working together. It shows the bond of a family.

3)Out of Gas-
The different time period-effect is genius. sheer genius. Again, in some scenes, like the dinner scene and the end scene in the infermary, it shows the feeling of a close-knit family who care greatly for eachother. It is great to see how the group came to be, because with a lot of shows, you see a group start out, and you may hear about how they met. This episode you actually SEE it.

4)The Message-
this was the last episode filmed, and it shows histroy of Mal and Zoe, but it also shows that everyone on the ship has an important role, especially the scene where it is Book who finds that the people chasing them are not as important as they claim to be. this episode can in fact, not just be seen as about tracey getting home, but as a metaphor for the show. His whole recording could be looked at as a message about the show, about its struggles, about its good times. When you can't run(keep the show going), you crawl(write the best possible episodes, looking at what is the most important thing to get throught to the viewers), and when you can't crawl, you can't do that, you find someone(the fans) to carry you.

5)Jaynestown-
Now, i know this may seem a weird choice, but it is an episode about character development. Sure, it can be looked at as a filler episode, but you see Kaylee and Simon as their relationship gets more complex, and most importantly, you get to see a different side of Jayne. You see him come to terms with what he did, face his fears, and overcome them. You see him care about the mudders and their well-being, and you don't just see him go to the fight mindset, he actually shows his thoughtfullness and emotion. And though we see a bit of that at the end of Ariel, this episode really showcases it. This is an episode dedicated to the character of Jayne Cobb, and nobody else, and that's what makes it special because he is the one who doesn't get as much growth as others in the other episodes(aside from wash, who needs more than just War Stories), so this is one to showcase him, and only him. The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne....

Yup, so those are the ones that stand out for me. The other episodes are also good, but those are special for me. Here are reasons the others are good though:

The Train Job: a second pilot, very well done.

Heart of Gold:Mal and Inara, Wash and Zoe baby talk

Bushwhacked:Their different perceptions during interrogation.

Our Mrs.Reynolds:Mal's Character

Safe:Simon and River's connection, Book

Ariel:Mal and Jayne, Mal and Simon/River, Jayne and River

Trash:Teamwork, Mal and Inara, Simon and Jayne

Shindig:Mal and Inara, Invites more expensive than a diamond the size of a testicle

War Stories:Mal and Wash, Mal and Zoe, Wash and Zoe, River and Kaylee

COZEN

Objects In Space.

Oddly enought, Our Mrs. Reynolds was the first episode I happened to catch, and it was enough to hook me. Something about the lack of pretence, the human foibles and strengths, the daring involved in creating futuristic drama without relying upon prosthetically enhanced aliens to fuel the plot. Gosh, I was pleasantly shocked to find that American tv could produce and sell entertainment without lcd gimmickry. (Well, then F*x did what they did....).

Being not much of a tv-type, as it happened, OiS was the second episode I caught, way way after the series had been relegated to re-running on the Space channel. Wow! I was blown away that anything produced for television on this side of the Atlantic would dare to explore existentialism in any context and hope to sell advertising space. Well, having seen just these two eps, I did the web-research, found out the series was defunct and out for dvd release, and bought the dvds. Good consumer action, cozen. (Never mind the sarcastic profile: it's just that, sarcasm).

Everything about OiS resonates deeply. The examination of how we view people, places, things. River with her profound understanding of contexts in all situations, Brooks eerie performance of Early, Jayne's wonky self-esteem (etc., etc.).

Gush.

There was a point here, I think. Oh yeah: I really dug the episode entitled "Objects In Space".

Actually, kinda like the whole series.

PERFESSERGEE

Please forgive an FFFnet newby for opining strongly (though I qualify as a Before Fox fan and have been occasionally lurking on this site for a long while - see my profile), but I really must assert that Out of Gas is the most awesome of a truly awesome set of episodes. Of course you'd have to have seen its predecessors to fully understand what's going on, but the structure of the storytelling is really compelling. And that's within a show whose storytelling is already exceptionally compelling.

Just my two cents worth....

(and of course there's all those other great epi's to grab your attention)

THESOMNAMBULIST

It's a choice between the brilliant direction of Out of Gas by David Solomon and the wonderful writing of Objects in Space by Joss

I think Objects in Space just edges out in front for me on the strength of the performance of Richard Brooks as Jubal Early, and the wonderful way he delivers Joss' lines.

i go with objects in space too for a number of reasons

1 - i have never seen an episode of tv that attempts to deal with quite heavy philosophical concepts with great clarity

2 - it has my favourite shots of river - i am a big fan of physical theatre and i think the imagery and the way river is positioned in shot is stunning -

3 - and i think we have to mention the music that accompanies early it says so much that isn't in the script

'forgive my rudeness. i cannot abide useless people'

I'm with you, perfessergee, and Zoid and Howdyrockerbaby1 (AND Browncoat1, just below)- Out Of Gas is awsome.
On a scale of 1000, OOG is 1000.
Serenity 1&2, Ariel and Objects In Space are 999.
Other eps range around 991-998.
To give perspective, Star Wars is 850 and Blade Runner is 995.

I get the sense that the BDM will warrent a new rating system.

Number cruncher

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Definitely Out of Gas.

The backstory on some of the crew was interesting to see and more clearly explained how they came to be on Serenity.

The music was incredible in this episode as well. It conveyed so much emotion, both sorrowful and triumphant that it was like an emotional roller coaster ride.

The shot at the end, when Mal sees Serenity for the first time was priceless.

Objects in Space. It's rare that a bad guy manages to send chills down my spine (I'm jaded from overexposure to fiction, perhaps).
