AKA - 'I have a dream'

The film for me, as wonderful as it looks, is really a means to get our show back. And if it fails to ressurect? We need a plan B!

Here in Melbourne, Australia we have this thing known as top-quality community radio (rrr, pbs -worth a look over the web if ya love great music)which is payed for by subscribers, and I wonder if the very same could be done with TV! How many people would it take to finance the filming of a show like firefly??? I'd happily pay $100 per season, especially if I got dvds at the end of which - and it was served over the net. Hell I usually pay something like that if I buy a season on dvd anyway, so why not pay for it up front. Then the show could be on-sold to the usual TV stations for extra $$. We would essentially be supporting subscribers or even 'mini' investors in a sense.

So 1 million fans across the world at $100 a season. Is 100 million enough to cover the cost of 1 23 episode tv season? Admitedly buggered if I know what it costs. Is this madness or folly? Could Joss produce a whole new net-savvy paradigm for TV watching and revolutionise story telling once more? Will the Browncoats rise again????

Well anyways maybe the film will bring it back to us, and i'll finally get to see exactly just what philosophy does drive the Reavers after all.

that is a very nice concept i would most definitly pay 100$ a season but idk if many of the fans have that kind of money but it would be well worth it and that kind of money could support a decent season of firefly.

Trekkies tried this recently for Enterprise. They actually raised a fair amount (partially due to some big doners), but it still didn't work out.

Fan-financed television may be the wave of the future, but we aren't there yet.

I don't think it will be necessary. I think I'm catching on to what all these screenings are about. They're taking a page from the debut of the original Star Wars.

For those of you too young to remember, in most cities Star Wars opened only as exclusive engagements at very few theaters. IN Kansas City it played at one theater for two months before it went into wide release. They knew they'd draw long lines of sci-fi fans and those lines, and the fanaticism they fostered, were tremendous publicity. I'm thinking they're trying to give us a chance to really beat the drums for Serenity. It seems to be working!

That's pretty cool (as one of those who was too young to be paying attention to the news when Star Wars came out ).

I think the virtual side of things is coming along nicely. All the links to the trailer that went up on-line. The increased sales on Amazon (they've changed their delivery date to 7 to 12 days now - guessing the DVDs are reallly back-ordered). The Complete Series has been moving in and out of the top 50 since the release of the trailer (and for a DVD that is almost a year and a half old, that's pretty amazing). But I'm not sure we're at the point where a purely on-line marketing strategy will be effective.

What we need to work on is the physical side. I only saw one article in a major paper that talked about the pre-screenings ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=9953 ). Hopefully, this time around, we can get the word out so that we have more reporters at the theaters.

And there's something that those who are attending the second round of pre-screenings can do while standing in line at the theaters. There were many people who walked by in SF and asked what we were standing in line for. The SF Browncoats ( http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/sfbrowncoats/ )had printed up a couple of different flyers and they handed these out to those who were curious (they also handed them out to everyone in line - they're really well done). It was a great idea and got the word out way better than just telling someone the name of the movie and trying to describe what it's about in one sentence.

I don't agree. Firefly is dead. It was cancelled. The film, is like the next evolution. But it won't be Firefly. This is what it is now.

It would be nice if the series came back, but I think that may be unlikely. The film is designed to be the first in a trilogy of films. Then after that, would the cast be too old? We're talking, 6 or 7 years down the line here?

I think VonJake's idea is the only way Firefly will ever make it back to the small screen, whether that be tv or computer monitors. I've seen Serenity, and it is not Firefly, it takes the story in a different direction than what most might be expecting, and there's no telling where a sequel might end up. But it sure ain't gonna fly on network tv if it remains in that direction.
