JORGASNAROVA

The FIREFLY character of Book--a holy man spreading the word of God throughout the Universe--reminds me very strongly of Rev Bem from the ANDROMEDA TV series.

For those unfamiliar with the program, Rev Bem was a physicist, medic, and Wayist Monk spreading the Word throughout the Cosmos. (Wayism was a mishmash of all major human religions). Rev was also a Magog, a man-eating monster, a genetically engineered bio-weapon who only through the uplift of his religious beliefs saw his crewmates on the starship Andromeda as friends and compatriots rather than as lunch.

Sadly, the actor playing Rev Bem, Brent Stait, developed a dangerous allergic reaction to his extensive makeup and the character had to be written out of the show early in the second season.

CYBERSNARK

Little bit, actually. Maybe a bit less caffeinated.

And yeah, I think the Wayist and our favourite Shepherd would likely find a great deal of common ground. That'd be an interesting discussion. And I can definitely see Book and Jayne echoing one of my favourite snarky-Rev lines.

TYR: Rev Bem, are you dead?
REV: Tyr Anasazi. Of the Kodiak Pride. Obviously I'm not in Heaven.

The Reavers have always reminded me of a better-written, more horrifically-portrayed (via being kept offscreen) version of the Magog. Main difference being that Reavers are humans, while the Magog are aliens

It also occurs to me that Book's unspecified religion may very well be a form of Wayism. A bit Christian-centric, whereas Rev's path seems more Buddhist-leaning, but Book does admit that some orders of his faith have different rules (and Rev mentions being able to hear confessions, if people so wish).

"Wayists don't make converts. We simply seek to show people that they are already Wayists." --Rev Bem
