Starts Friday July 22.

(Followed by Stargate, SG Atlantis and Battlestar Galatica).

And yes, I'm talking repeats, before anybody gets too excited - expect lots more browncoats, though.

OMG!!!!!
Seriously?
The Sci-fi channel is going to rerun the BDS
(Big Damn Series)
but...it is so few episodes...
oh it doesn't matter, getting it back on the air is MAJOR
and in time for the comic books!
this will really help lay the ground work for more fans to be ready when 'Serenity' is released!

OMG I am so happy!
(you had better not be wrong about this!)

We all know the biggest way to promote Firefly is to just have people watch it... the more we can do of this the better it is. And think of all the ads running promoting the movie... this is gonna be grand. I'll be tuning in for sure.

EDIT: Are they starting with "Serenity"? Because this could be disasterous if that isn't the case. Anybody have any info on that? Do we need to start writing letters?

EDIT 2: Searched "Firefly" on scifi.com's schedule. It comes up with July 22 at 7, July 29 at 6 and 7. I take this to mean "Serenity Part 1" on the 22nd, then again on the 29th at 6, and part two following. But purely speculation on my part.

This rocks!!! Everybody print out flyers advertising this and distribute them to the folks in line for Star Wars! It will be so much easier to get them to tune into SciFi Channel than to get them to buy DVDs sight-unseen!

Oh, WOW is this the shiniest of news!

Making the BDS the lead-in for Sci-Fi's most popular shows will be a great way to bring new legions into the fold.

And as a little side snicker - doesn't this mean Mal Reynolds will be replacing Dylan Hunt in the Friday Night Lineup?

This is quiet exciting news!

It is too bad there isn't more information out about this yet. It would be nice to know if:

1.) The series will be shown in the correct order
2.) The originally unaired episodes will be included
3.) Whether or not this is a one time deal...meaning has Sci-fi has bought the rights to show the series whenever they want or would this be a summer-only thing?

Sci-Fi Channel's schedulebot does not have the episode titles listed yet, but more than likely "Serenity" (the pilot episode) will be shown in two parts. All they have now is three listings, July 22 at 7pm Eastern, and two eps listed for the following Friday, 7/29, one at 6pm the other at 7pm.

Sci-fi is owned by NBC/Universal...

Sci-fi in the UK are showing Firefly at the moment, and they are doing it the correct order, with all the episodes. It is very likely the same will happen with the US branch of Sci-fi.

It seems like it'd be in their best interest to be shown in order, however, the announcement (see the first reply in this thread), does say they picked up all 15 hours and makes it sound like they can show it when they want.

If they begin with "Serenity Part 1" on 7/22, then run Part 2 and "The Train Job" on 7/29, then run the eps in order after that and don't miss a Friday, then "Trash" will air on September 30.

Did the same thing myself, but I kind of like this outcome better...

They show Serenity Part 1 on the 22, repeat it on the 29th, and show part 2. This is actually what Fox should have done. First, it gives people who catch Part 1 an opportunity to call their friends and say "this is repeating next week... watch it!" And those people who just tune in Fridays at 7 won't miss a single frame.

If that is indeed what they do (and I sure hope so), then "Out of Gas' and "Ariel" will air the two weeks before the BDM opens, and "Trash" will air opening night.

EDIT: Just re read your post. We come to the same conclusion, but by different means... I reserve the right to be wrong, however...

Who made this happen? I would start right here with all of YOU and this SITE (some dude named Haken), and those at the OB (Original Board) and those at the 'Versal site/boards and to the BDH (the GREAT cast) and Mr. Joss Whedon his own bad self - everyone for not never, ever giving up. In my little corner of the 'verse this is a huge, albeit early, victory in bringing the show back to TV. The DVDs were the first step, then the BDM, and now this.

Yeah, if we're really lucky Channel 5 will buy it and show it around midnight like they did with Angel and Alias...

It seems like perfect BBC2 material to me (no commercials for one thing) but I reckon the series is too old now for a terrestrial show to consider picking it up.

I think we should write them! Because Fox don't give a shit, they just list them in the original air order. There are many stations around the world where they have shown them in the FOX order - ie, some episodes juggled around and serenity last.
And here they were all set to do that same, until I and some fans wrote the station and yelled at them (politely of course ;) then they finally changed it to the DVD order.
But unless there are Firefly fans at scifi tney may just use the Fox order... :/

KNIBBLET

My mother attempted to raise readers so we were allowed 5 hours of TV a week. I'm 43 now and it's a limit I try to keep to this day, so my limited TV hours have to be something I enjoy. I don't watch reruns.

I never saw MacGyver (sp) so I can't say anything about that. It must have been reasonably enjoyable since 'MacGyver' and all sorts of varients have entered the popular lexicon.

I highly enjoy SG1 and RDA is one of the reasons why. His O'Neil is hysterical and a hottie.

I tolerate SGA. I'd enjoy it more if they'd have kept the orginal Dr. Wehr (the blonde woman who appeared in SG1). The super skinny stick female who currently plays Dr. Wehr annoys me and detracts from my enjoyment of the series.

The StarGate movie is one of my faves and gets bonus points for Kurt Russell (one of our finest and most underrated living actors).

The scene in the movie with O'Neil smoking the cigarette -- read, making love with that lucky lucky cancer stick -- sends me out into the streets to bum smokes off strangers. And honey ... I don't even smoke!

BSG rocks the socks off the 'verse. Everyone knows my BSG and Smallville hours are NOT a good time to interrupt me.

My fifth hour of TV is usually 'Criminal Intent', what can I say, Vincent D'Onofrio is another fine actor who I enjoy.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but we're talking 7:00 on a Friday, folks. Part of what killed Firefly was being on at 8:00 on a Friday. This time slot is either only marginally better or maybe even worse. It's also ghettoized, since non-sci-fi fans don't watch.

And Sci-Fi doesn't get huge amounts of viewers in any case. We're talking UPN viewing numbers here, not ABC. I don't doubt that we'll add fans, don't get me wrong. I just think there won't be that many. Any increase helps, though, of course, and I'll eat crow happily if the show does get major Nielson ratings.

So, for me, it's a help, but won't fundamentally affect Serenity's chances of major success. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

BSG doesn't seem to have suffered the same fate, so maybe the Friday night death slot is a myth? Maybe being later helped, certainly not any more than an hour earlier would hurt. It's quality writing that counts IMHO, as I've been harping about with the demise of Enterprise.

Besides, this is essentially "syndication" which made the original ST gain critical mass, so let it have its slow rumble, it can only help turnout in the fall for the BDM. It's not like it's fighting for survival for renewal next season. I look at it as (if they air the episodes as they were intended) redemption for how they screwed up the series the first time.

The Friday death slot is no myth. BSG didn't suffer the same fate as a network show because it's on a netlet, which is happy with small niche numbers. Those numbers would have doomed it on Fox, let alone NBC of any other of the big networks.

What day was the syndicated ST on, anyway? Anybody know? I do think that this will contribute to Serenity gaining critical mass, but I still think it's going to be a minor factor.

I think you're not looking at it the right way. This is one big 8 week ad for the movie in September. What better ad could there be than showing 8 hours of great television. As for me, I've already talked to my converts and told them it's showing, and told people I haven't gotten the DVDs to yet with the intention they all get on board and watch before the movie comes out. I've already got a dozen converts, but that number could double with the people who can be converted through an easy one hour committment a week, rather than sitting down and watching all the DVDs (which I'd have to lend to them anyways).

Perhaps not airing all the episodes before the movie is brilliance. Let's say you see this pilot called "Serenity" on scifi. You want to see more, so you check the schedule. But out of curiosity you look up the show and see there's a movie coming out, too (or, more likely, one of the many commercials during the show gives it away). Well, now you want to see all the episodes before the movie comes out. What do you do? Go buy the DVD of course.

I imagine we'll see the number of "Hey, I'm new, just found this show and it's great! Can't wait for the movie!" posts to increase when this shows up on TV again.

If you became a fan through the DVDs and never saw the eps on TV you missed a small but fun bonus. Hopefully, SF will play the narratives provided by Ron Glass and Nathan Fillion at the beginning of each show that was televised. "Here's how it is..."

Personally, I was disappointed that they were not a bonus feature on the DVDs. Enjoy!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

(Nods head sagely)

Yes, yes. It is all coming together according to plan.

I just KNEW that 'Versal would run Firefly on Sci Fi Channel in the months leading up to the BDM as part of their marketing plan to promote the BDM. Why did I think this? It's logical, it's cheap for 'Versal, and it gets it out there on the small screen for all those sci fi genre fans who haven't seen it to hook them before the moive hits the end of September.

I knew you wouldn't let me down Joss or 'Versal.
