Ni haody, all.

Encouraged by news of the Big Damn Movie, now that it's a tangible reality, I made another fan video.

I started with the first few seconds of Firefly I ever saw, from the opening moments of "The Train Job" and ended with the last few seconds of "Objects In Space" to bookend the whole story. There's at least one shot from each episode, too.

This was fun to make. I took the lyrics of the song and broke it by time, then went through the entire show and grabbed clips of a few seconds each for each lyric in turn. A little editing in iMovie and I was done. It took maybe three or four hours, and I enjoyed myself tremendously.

Download it at http://homepage.mac.com/rocketplane/

If there's interest, I'll repost my other vid also. Thanks, and keep flying.

Please do repost your vids. My computer crashed a while back and I lost everything. I have managed to get some vids back, but was a bit disappointed to find others, including yours, were gone.

I am still trying to load your latest vid, the computer still isn't right and it takes several tries. It won't download any really large files. However, once I have it I will leave feedback.

Thanks.

Okaaaay, not sure whether this is my computer throwing another hissy fit or an error at your end. The music keeps breaking up and I aint getting no pictures, just swirling colours (though they are nicely done!)

If you tell me what player and codec you are using to play the vid, I'll see if I can troubleshoot from this end. Sorry it's not working out.

Hey, if anyone else has managed to play it successfully, could you post here so I can work out what the problem is? Thanks!

Just downloaded it and watched it. No problems whatsoever. Fantastic job! A very nice vid and I really liked the music choice.

Thanks for the help. It's probably something I am doing wrong, I am a total numpty when it comes to technology!!

The player is Windows Media player (I think it's version 9) and the codec is divx.

On the third attempt the music played fine. On the fifth attempt I sorta got the picture. I get red lines across the screen for a while, then the picture appears but chunks of it are missing, there are blocks of white. Am I being really thick? Is this a 'special effect'?

Beats me, Wren. No, it's not a special effect. I'd recommend giving the quicktime player a try or taking a look at some of the other players at http://www.divx.com. Good luck.

Hey, Embassy!

That was GREAT! Seriously, that was the best fanvid I have seen. You said it only took a few hours, but the clips you chose fit each and every line of the song perfectly. It looked like you spent a lot of time on it. I also watched your first video (for the first time) and I really enjoyed it. It made me laugh out loud because the idea of 'a love song to a boat' is a little absurd. But ultimately, it made me grin big because (absurd or not), I feel the same way!

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to any future vids you do!

Embassy, that was the best fanvid EVER! The synchronization between the music/lyrics and the video clips was perfect!

I almost bust a gut when I got to the "I'm so brave, but I'm a baby" line!

More problems here.

The "Falling for the First Time" vid is indeed shiny. Excellent work.

"Love Song for a Boat" is the one that's not working. I'm using Windows Media Player, version 8 (+updates, so it's like 8.somethingorother). The file opens, the player says "opening media," then it just stops. I press play, and nothing happens, and the time indicator tells me that it's 14 minutes and 29 seconds long (yet still only 13.2 MB).

I just tried it with the dedicated DivX player 2.5 (it sometimes plays vids that windows media won't), and it gave me a slightly more realistic timeframe of 2:31, but then the player crashed.

Thanks for the kind words on "Falling for the first time"

Regarding "Love Song to a Boat," DivX Player is more or less correct. The duration is 2:52:07. I would recommend updating your codec to 5.1.1, available at http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe, which I think also includes a new version (2.5.3) of the player. If it doesn't, the player can be downloaded separately from http://download.divx.com/player/DivXPlayerInstaller.exe.

Sorry for the hassle. This obliges me to pose a question to other vidders: Is there a format that is commonly accepted for maximum compatibility with everyone? The most general format I know of is MPEG1, which, if you follow the white book standard will play everywhere. But it runs ten meg to the minute and is only 352 by 240 in NTSC, which is a little grainy to my eye.

I work on a Mac, but did test on a Windows machine before posting. Suggestions are happily welcome.

All my vids and trailers are wmv9 encoded plus I have DivX avi versions of them. I don't have the DivX versions up because of the rather large file sizes (compared to wmv) involved and the lack of hosting space.

Wow! If I had a hat, I would be doffing it right now. Amazing. Woo hoo!

Thanks for sharing ... and thanks for the code link for us Mac users.

BTW ... how do y'all *do* these sorts of things? I mean, I've got a lovely Pismo here that's probably capable of so much, yet for the most part, all I do is type.

Cheers,

Step 1: Rip entire DVD set.
Step 2: Download lyrics to song.
Step 3: Listen to song in iTunes. Annotate lyrics with times of beginning and ending to get an estimate of clip size.
Step 4: Think really hard about which clips you want for each lyric.
Step 5: Open each clip in QT Player Pro. Select just the few seconds you want and export to DV.
Step 6: Open a new iMovie project. Close it. Drag the DV clips into the project's "Media" folder. Reopen the iMovie project. Accept the "Put clips in tray" message that pops up.
Step 7: Import the song into iMovie.
Step 8: Arrange clips in order. Add transitions to taste (I like 10 frame short cross dissolves myself but use what works for you).
Step 9: Save and quit.
Step 10: Open the QuickTime reference movie in the iMovie project folder. Export to the output format of your choice. DivX AVI is a popular selection.

That's it in a nutshell. Your pismo can do it too, especially if you use OS X.

Do you have these available in Windows Media Player Format? I can't get quicktime to play properly much to my dismay.

It would be WRONG to create video entertainment in a closed format such as WIndows Media Player's WMV format.

If QuickTime isn't working for you, try VLC or DiVX player as an alternative.

I guess I'll just have to deprive myself of your vids then. My collection won't be complete, but such is life in an Alliance-contolled 'verse. I thought I downloaded DiVX, but all I get is sound and no pictures, so I don't know what to do. Any advice?

*Smacks Forehead Soundly* I apologize if I sounded kurt, but it's freakin' 2:30 AM and I'm still up. Gotta love insomnia. Anyway, I found a way to download the vids and add the web link to my list. Thanks for your patience.
