Here`s a few obvious ones to start this thread off, I think it says a lot about the items we see the characters -

Shepherd Book - His sacred book
Jayne - Vera, Hat
Inara - Shuttle
Mal - Browncoat
Zoe - waistcoat
Wash - got to be dinosaurs, right?
Kaylee - strawberries
River - I had to think of this quite hard (for a few seconds) - her cycle shorts
Simon - Another difficult one, what reminds me of him throughout the show? perhaps his medical bag (although we don`t see it a great deal)

So there, 9 characters & the 10th one (Serenity), it would have to be the engine(s) - both external & the engine room.

See what you can come up with - these are the 1st things that came in my head - so try to do the same - think of it like a fun pschological mind game.

When I think of River I think of her "stick" from Objects in Space, and when I think of Kaylee I think of her parasol!

And Wash- Hawaiian shirt.

I was actually thinking of the series as a whole, I had thought about the stick for River, had to think carefully about Kaylee, with the strawberries too.

I guess it`s the most memorable items that stick in the mind.

I don`t think Shepherd Books hair should count, it`s not an object as such.

It has to be the stick, look at the picture:

Find me an image that better shows River, one where you can look at it and instantly tell you are looking at River instead of Summer.

After you’ve done that, you probably can, throw out all of the ones that don’t have an object you can associate her with.

It’s either the stick of the cryogenic chamber, and the stick is better.

Zol:

Good question!

My answers:

Book: Bible

Jayne: Goggles

Inara: Syringe

Mal: Suspenders ('braces' for the Brits in the audience; although you never know, eh?)

Zoe: The legs ...you can put that down. ...And where her legs meet her back... Actually that whole area... Where the Lord split her... (or her sawed-off rifle, if you insist on being serious.)

Wash: Dinosaurs

Kaylee: Strawberries

River: Tree branch or rubber ball

Simon: Syringe (different than Inara's... or is it?)

Itemizingly,

Zoid technically they are braces, because they button to the pants. Suspenders clip on. At least that is my understanding of the difference. Of course pants with buttons for braces are called suspender pants. Hmmm....

Important people don't do field work.

I can't believe that no one's brought up Zoe's Mare's Leg. I LOVE that gun. Behind Mal's, it is my very favorite gun.

Wash is the dinosaurs...gotta be, right.

Kaylee...The engine room/strawberries...

Simon...That black medical bag.

Jayne...Its all about the hat, baby.

Book...I always associated him more with the robes he was wearing than anything else.

Inara...The hourglass.

River...That stick/or the Desert Eagle it turns into...I'm not sure which, because its the same gun she weilds in War Stories.

Mal...Serenity herself,...Okay, the gun....No really...okay...The Browncoat...

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

xenocide:

I don't know about 'technically', but this is one of those disconnects between English and American 'English'. 'Suspenders', in the US, may be popularly defined as, well, 'suspenders' as we generically think of them. In British (and Commonwealth) parlance, 'suspenders' refers to a garter belt, a la Frederick's of Hollywood and J. Edgar Hoover.

What we generically refer to as 'suspenders', Britons routinely call 'braces'. (NB: As in Elton John's, "My sister looks cute in her braces and boots", which many Americans think means she's wearing an orthodontic appliance.)

There probably is a more detailed etymological refinement of this particular quirk in usage; but, generally, if you say 'suspenders' to an American, one picture leaps to mind, quite different from that which leaps to the mind of a Brit. And vice versa with the term 'braces'...

Linguistically (or at least 'Linguini-ly'),

But in the US the are sold as braces if the have button holes. So do you think they are different or is this jsut caused by snobbishness and linguistic overlap? Any Brits here to chime in?

Ok, here`s a good brit reason why they are braces and not suspenders.

If you goto a gentlemans outfitters and ask for suspenders, you are most likely to be asked if they are for holding up socks rather than trousers - think Jeeves & Wooster - Braces on the other hand have only the one meaning within the gentlemans out fitters - the device used for holding up ones trousers.

Now - Get back to the question!

xenocide:

Please do not misunderstand. As I said, there are many ways of correctly saying anything, to include the usage of 'braces' versus 'suspenders'.

I was simply trying to point out that if you say, "He was wearing suspenders" to an American, the likely response would be, "What? Doesn't he like belts?", as opposed to a Brit's "What? Is Eddie Izzard on again?"

Same thing with 'braces'. Say, "The teen-aged girl wore braces," and most Americans ('Yanks', I suppose, to be fair) think of orthodontia; whereas most Brits would have a mental picture of straps worn over the shoulders to hold up a pair of trousers/breeches/britches/pants.

Still, isn't it interesting that I'm apparently the only one who finds Mal's suspenders/braces a signature item? Most folks have said 'gun'. I think I see him as more of a father figure, symbolized by his suspenders...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.

But seriously, have you figured who a body's got to sleep with to get a ticket?!

Master Zol:

I am most taken aback, sirrah, at the suggestion that I might be hijacking a thread!

The image of a scantily clad Mal-Licious holding two tickets to the BDM would be the finest example of symbolism, and pertinent to any conversation of Firefly, surely.

And to think this all started with Mal Reynolds' suspenders... There's a good Southern epithet in there, somewhere.

Like, "Mal Reynolds' suspenders! What in tarnation are y'all arguin' about?"

Epithetically,

zoid

Zoid,

You never have, and never could, say anything that would offend me.

Zol, on the other hand, has offended me by reprimanding you. I don't appreciate that, not a jot. Everyone here has a (gasp!) It is a living thing. If you want to get only those responses you deem correct, then don't put it on a forum where I can get a hold of it. Because I am most definitely not a robot.

'Lishus:

Thanks for the support, but I guess Zol is right about distracting from his poll. I just didn't realize that he was intending it to be scientific and the centerpiece of his Master's thesis. I thought it was supposed to be an exercise in fun for fans of the show, like most of the other threads hereabouts.

I can't get mad at Captain Zol Harbatkin, though. I've got one of his excellent Serenity wallpapers ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2831) on my #1 desktop. Anybody who could make such an excellent wallpaper has got to be an alright guy, even if he does accuse me of 'degenerating' his poll. I was pretty sure degenerating polls was your bailiwick...

'snark:
Thank you for being generous, as well.

ChrisTheCynic:
Mal-Licious is definitely a 'she-robot', if she's a Cylon at all. I've seen the pictures, and trust me, there's no doubt in my mind.

Also, topic-wards: Yeah, I can see the brolly for Kaylee's symbol. But everytime I think about Kaylee, the image of her savoring Book's strawberry gift pops straight into my head, just as with Simon I immediately see him preparing a hypodermic for his sister. "No, Mei-Mei. It's time to wake up."

As usual, can't stick exactly to the topic, yet humbly submit a list in the spirit of things:

Kaylee: perfect wife

Wash: me

Simon: whom I wish I could be capable of, had I the I.Q.

Zoe: Xena

Book: Conscience. Flawed, but quite handy.

Inara: whore-wife-mother

Mal: the guy we need in order to succeed, but can't be.

Jayne: useful grunt, when we can look the other way.

River: Ever met an acute depressive? Usually phenominally brilliant, requiring a lot of work to be with, but if you can ride it out the rollercoaster trips, ultimately rewarding beyond all imagination.

Serentity: home.

Let me take a stab at this.

Mal. Browncoat and gun are given. I'll add the red button. Maybe an ear? (he does have at least one in every episode )

Zoe. Necklace.

Wash. Dinos. The steering wheel (or lack of it in one scene of Serenity).

Book. The Book.

Inara. Syringe. Maybe that funky magmalamp thing.

Kaylee. Engine grease. Her 'sheep' dress.

Jayne. Statue. Hats -- both from The Message and Train Job. Vera too. It's hard to pick just one; Jayne touches everything.

Simon. Medicine in general.

River. Her box. The stick, of course.

And Badger. His hat. Maybe even that apple peeler. (sorry)

Honestly though, I thought the image of River slipping head-first -- naked, wet and disoriented -- from her padded cryogenic containment (in which we had seen her lying fetally curled) was intensely suggestive of birth. It was one of the most powerful and original uses of symbolism I had ever seen in any visual medium. Wow! What a show!
